Awesome Compliment Today
« on: April 23, 2013, 04:17:19 PM »
I teach part-time and was leaving for home near the end of lunch.  I walked by a bunch of lovely grade 12 students and one teased me for wearing my bicycle helmet in the school.  His friend asked, "Miss, do you even own a car?"
"No.  And I never have.  I get around by cycling or walking or taking transit."
"That's so cool.  I'm going to do that.  You must save a lot of money by not owning a car."  Two of her friends agreed.
:)  And so the MMM lifestyle is perpetuated.

You're a living example for them.  Way to go!

Nice! Curious as to where you teach. I attended HSC for grade 10 then transferred to a Burlington school.

It's the little actions that have impact. I was inspired to ride my bicycle around more because my someone I like does it and makes it look easy

@KK:  Just sent you an email.  :)

Generally speaking, the students think it's nuts and "too far" when I walk to work, but the cycling seems to impress them somehow.  It's only 2 miles, but the kids in my neighbourhood get bussed.

When I was in Junior High (grade 7-9), one of our teachers used to cross country ski to school, we all thought he was pretty tough for that. Now I can't wait to be that teacher!

That is cool.  And as a teacher, it's fun to have some eccentricity.

How happy was I today when the same girl parked her bike next to mine and was so excited about how much fun it was and faster than walking?  :)

That is so awesome! Way to lead by example. Working at a car company and riding a bike to work generally earns me suspicious glares.

There's a professor at my university that gets around by transit exclusively. Having somewhat public figures like yourself BPA (teachers) certainly provides a lot more exposure to the lifestyle than some office worker like myself can do! There was even an article in the local paper about his "unusual" commuting style...

Here's to a future when riding bikes and using transit in the developed world isn't considered fringe and newsworthy!  :)

That's awesome.  Even if some dismiss it or don't immediately "get" it, I think this kind of exposure can lay the foundation.

In high school I had a crazy teacher that was always ranting about how she lived "off the grid.". This was in the early 90s.  I still think she was kinda crazy (the ranting more than the lifestyle), but I  also grateful to have been exposed to those ideas early on.

That is so cool!

I do something similar.  I'm a community college instructor, and I'll often use financial examples in classes like Excel.  In fact, I joke around that I just use the Excel class as a front to teach personal finance.  Lots of people also notice that I often ride a bike to work, that I've got lots of energy, I'm optimistic and love my work.  Some also know that I'm on the radio once per month discussing personal finance and Mustachianism.  So I often get asked questions that I'm happy to answer.  :-)

My wife even takes her own opportunities as a middle school teacher.

Speaking of teachers, I've been accepted into U of Alberta for my Bachelor of Education (Secondary social studies and a minor in phys ed)!

This is my dream job and I absolutely can't wait.

That is wonderful to hear. I would like to give up a car. Not sure I can persuade DH to do that though. Plan B for me is not to replace the first of the two cars that fails. I don't think we really need two anymore.

Selling it before it fails will get you a lot better return than laying for an unnecessary car for a time, then having to sell as to running, or pay to get it repaired before selling.

May want to propose the idea to DH and let it start percolating.
