Audiobooks/Podcasts: what do you suggest?
« on: December 21, 2014, 12:50:17 PM »
As I do traveling from time to time related to work, I enjoy listening to an audiobook or podcast - my interest is investment or something similar.  Can anyone suggest what I should look into listening to next?  I am new to investing (the last 2 years) and planning for retirement.
Also, if anyone knows of good quality sites to get these books for free or little cost, that would be a great help and I hope you would share the link.

Thank you in advance for your posts.

Radical Personal Finance: http://radicalpersonalfinance.com/

Joshua posts on these forums pretty regularly, and is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject.  He does a show pretty much everyday, and they can go up to 3 hours, so you'll be busy for a long time if you try to listen to them all and catch up.

Madfientist also has some good interviews, but he hasn't added any in a while: http://www.madfientist.com/podcast/

Freakonomics and Planet Money are both great.

You've probably heard "Serial" which just finished this week.  It's an in-depth examination of a murder case from 1999 in Baltimore.

For audiobooks check you local library. Mine has both books on CD and ones I can download to my ipod/computer/phone. I like Freakonomics, the whole behavioral economics field. I recommend anything by Dan Ariely.

Good topic. Jill on Money is a solid podcast.

This might be sacrilegious to say but I am going to say it anyway.

I like the The Dave Ramsey podcast.  It is 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week and is interesting.  As well, it is a good reminder to keep my finances in order.

When I am driving at night I like listening to DNTO from CBC Canada.  Definitely Not The Opera, picks a particular topic for the week, then combines a bunch of short interviews and interesting stories on the topic.  It is a collection of stories from great story tellers.

I listen to the Dase Ramsey one also even though he pisses me off about half the time between ranting against his critics on social media, endless shilling for yet another self serving product/seminar, and giving bad investment advice.  I like much of his advice on money and relationships, family, business and inheritance.

I would highly recommend the library, as you already paid for it in your taxes.

The Cracked podcast is pretty funny and sometimes informative (although unrelated to investing).

Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) has a large selection of free audio books.

Podcasts:

Serial
This American Life
RadioLab
Stuff you missed in history
Stuff you should know
Freakonomics
The Memory Palace(might not be good for drives because they tend to be pretty short)
Judge John Hodgeman
Hardcore History

As others have said, your local library will have plenty of audiobooks.  Whatever you like you should ne able to find!

I am a fan of Dan Carlin's work, both Hardcore History and the lesser known "Common Sense" series that deals with current events.

Stacking Benjamins is a pretty entertaining personal finance podcast that airs 3X week. It is done by two financial advisers with special guests, a weekly roundtable and other weekly features. As a extra bonus, they do movie reviews at the end of the show.

Not financial, but a short interesting podcast - 99% invisible.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
