Article: Unexpected Consequences of Early Retirement

A mainstream media article that actually gets it right:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/unexpected-consequences-early-retirement-151144743.html

Many of the very issues discussed daily in this forum are noted here (methinks perhaps the author is a lurker).  Also, in contrast to the norm, there are lots of positive comments from early retirees, rather that the usual whiny-ness of "it's impossible!"

Yeah, David Ning is a PF blogger that Yahoo has been commissioning for articles lately.  He's written about generic FIRE topics before, and it's nice to see them in a mainstream place like YahooFinance.   His blog is http://moneyning.com/

A really good article from mainstream media for once.

I had a similar experience as: It's scary to spend down your life savings

When I eventually came to purchase my first property, it was actually pretty scary to spend literally my life savings on it. Even though all these years I'd known I was saving up for the house deposit.. It was still pretty scary to see the large lump of cash disappear.

Thought as OP said there were some pretty successful people and good comments to follow which was nice for a change.

Nice article.  I found the first couple of points very relevant to where I'm at.

I think this is the hardest part to wrap my head around:

"Other people may not be happy for you. Once you finally get the courage to draft your resignation letter, not everybody will be happy for you. People who didn't save as diligently as you or were unable to save due to their life circumstances may be jealous of your freedom from working."

how do you describe your early retirement plan without offending others who are living paycheck to paycheck?

Great article...I can really relate. In another thread on this forum I warned people that ER may not be all it's cracked up to be. I was, pretty much, lambasted for it. ER is not so easy for everyone...the only one in my household that was truly glad to see me home every morning was the dog!
