Title pretty much summarizes it

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/upshot/early-retirement-longevity-health-wellness.html

tl/dr; Dutch study found probability of death within 5 years was reduced by 2.6 percentage points when early [age 55] retirement was taken compared to those who continued to work. This study lines up with many others throughout the world.
Underlying reasons may be reduced stress, increased sleep and a reduction in smoking of early retirees vs their counterparts.

Next article: early retirement may increase lifespan, but you won't notice it since you will forget most of it.

"it isn’t retirement itself that affects health, but what you do in retirement"

I think it is what you do both during your working years and what you do in retirement. It is a lot harder to FIRE monetarily if you are a low paid blue collar worker than high paid desk jockey, I would imagine. Light physical duty is a lot easier on the body than digging ditches, so I would think retirees last longer if they are not already broken. Many self help folks recommend a more social retirement being good for your longevity.
