Are gymboree classes worth it?
« on: June 23, 2016, 02:44:16 PM »
Hi,

My wife is suggesting sending 6 month kid to gymboree classes.
4 classes for $100 in a month. I see that as very expensive, all i see that kid goes there and plays. hard to understand paying $25 for just to let the kid play.

Are there any alternatives that you do ?
are gymboree classes worth that much money?

Thank you.

My dh took our kids to Gymboree as toddlers, and they had a lot of fun. It was more about the two of them doing something fun together, plus we lived in a climate with long winters so it was nice to have an indoor play area.

It's worth it if it's worth it to you. I guess.

Alternatives - find a play group. Go to the library programs. Play at the playground.

Not at that age if other free options are available.
Library reading time is awesome. They have them every weekday at my library once or twice a day depending on age of child.
We went with my littles when they were tiny. They loved it.

We still go when we have time, they usually do a reading time then activities. Lots of fun for the kids and the mess is contained to the library.

We go to indoor parks or outdoor parks, or visiting friends nearby.

I won't pay for activities like gymboree until kids are 4.

It doesn't seem like it would be worth it for the "play" at that age unless it's hard for the kid to find space to play elsewhere, but I wonder if your wife is also interested in getting out of the house, meeting other young parents, etc.  In that case I think that's a reasonable use of money.  Maybe she's feeling isolated or is looking for inspiration from other parents.

At that age not worth it, imo. Do you have a discovery center? It is 120 a year for a family.

What I found about Gymboree is it is a good way for local moms to meet which can be very valuable in those early days with a baby which are very isolating.

Absolutely not worth it.  And I liked Gymboree, and we took our first son for a couple years (before I found MMM).

Here's the thing.  It's basically the same 4-8 families showing up each week playing with $100 worth of toys for less than an hour.  At some point it finally hit me that we could just buy a few toys and invite people over, or vice versa, and we would have accomplished exactly the same thing for $1k less per year.

Gymboree is like how cutting the grass turned into "landscaping" and became 10 times more expensive.  It's a way to separate upper middle class parents from their money (because it's "for the kids").  Kids (particularly young one) just want some attention, and they may only marginally realize/appreciate that other kids are there.  Save your money, spend time with your kids, and set up play dates to get them around other kids.  You will have accomplished the exact same thing as Gymboree but saved ridiculous amounts of money in the process.

...6 months old??  No.  If your wife is looking for some interaction with other women with young childen, see if a local church in your community has a MOPS group.  No charge.

6 month olds don't really 'play'. I'd suggest walking groups, library time, a parents group, a cheap baby music group, baby and me exercise classes?

Babies can be isolating. Giving her a night or so a week where she can go out, catch up with friends, exercise etc could be helpful.
