Anyone wanting to try other jobs after FI?
« on: March 13, 2016, 10:15:14 PM »
I have these crazy ideas about trying Uber, bartending, experiencing things I normally wouldn’t have now that I’m basically FI.

Mostly for the experience alone.
I could maximize my part time with minimal hours consulting and working some limited part time work (much more $), but I think I want to go for the experiences for a bit.

Anyone else have these ideas?

I am thinking of documenting the experience, I assume Uber work would be the most entertaining

I am sure the experience will be different as a completely at will employee.

I’m not sure how long this itch will last and wonder if others have felt the same?

Yes for sure. I would like to be a dog trainer, not full time but maybe 15-20 hours a week. Maybe also some volunteer work at an animal shelter.

I just like animals....

FIRE is not about sitting around on your ass all day, it's about having the freedom to do whatever you want, when you want, for whatever reasons you please.

So definitely, yes.

I have a relatively high stress job.  I would love to just work at a Bike shop or hardware store where I can be social and work part time.  Along with time to volunteer on conservation projects.  Nothing too exciting.  But sounds rather relaxing to me.

Once I'm FIRE I would classify them as "activities"... if I get paid for them, good, if I don't, doesn't matter.

But yes, I probably have about a dozen "activities" I'd like to give a good shot at once I'm FIRE... If all fizzle out there's always reading, fitness, sports leagues, wood working, house renos, car repairs, fishing, bushcraft, camping... list goes on and on :)

Certainly I would intend to. In all cases would need to be flexible, part time or only a portion of the year, at my discretion, in an area of interest and be for a cause I believed in or for decent pay (or for both).

First would be out of interest and/or for voluntary/charitable reasons. Some of which might be paid a bit or be a win/win like volunteer at this sporting event and get free tickets, that would be great, it could also be unpaid.

Secondly part time or occasional work would be a 'middle ground' to full FIRE for me, because while I have a sensible FIRE point in mind I don't know exactly what my future plans are, so having flexible income to cover some/most of my minimum living costs would put me in a great position should my future costs be higher (may turn out that the income is not needed, in which case I can give more to charity).  That could be e.g. English tutor (if, as is possible, I move out of UK. That would be say x hours a week every week), or as a different approach IT contracting (getting hired on an x months contract for an IT project, earning good money per day, rather than being a freelancer who has to chase work all the time. Obviously that's closer to normal full time work, but I would be in a position to say "no" at any point, be selective about the employer, work and conditions, and would not be doing it full time for years on end. e.g. working for 6 months and putting max contributions into pension etc. could add 3 years of minimum living costs to total investments).

Yep.  I have a future fun job bucket list:

Waitressing.  Just wanna try it.
Aldi cashier.  I like cashiering and Aldi keeps their employees busy and they pay relatively well for the job.   Seems like fun - plus they let them SIT down while cashiering.
National Park Service.  I just want to live in a National Park for a year or so.

It's something I've been thinking about.  FIRE would take a long time for me without a career switch (which I lack the motivation to do), so my current plan is to save to a certain amount and then leave that to grow (for a not so early retirement) while I move to part-time work or try out other things which are lower paid but I think might be more interesting (with jobs just covering living expenses, rather than extra to invest).  Probably something outdoors and/or working with plants or animals.

All these ideas are so interesting to read, and I’ve thought about quite a few!  I think the perspective will obviously change when one is totally at will.

It’s funny what you start coming up with, unsolicited, what’s interesting.

I started a blog to document, started delving in real estate, have always invested in it.  But we will see how long that keeps my interest.

Yes! I have wanted to teach for a long time. The teaching pay in my state was abysmal and we couldn't really afford for me to take the paycut. I make OK money (but nothing insane) and I could work  as a teacher for 35 years and never match what I make now. Crazy!

My plan is to keep in my tech sector (if possible) until my youngest starts highschool in 12 years. Then I'll go back to school and be ready to start my teaching when she goes to college. It will be my empty nest transition project. If I hate it then I'll still be financially independent and can just quit. My husband is a college professor and wants to work until they force him to retire in his dotage :)

Pastry chef/cake decorator. All through college I threatened to drop out (because I'm a terrible student and also calculus I and II) and go to pastry school instead. I doubt I could hack it in a commercial kitchen, but it might be fun to do a side business decorating cakes or making candy.

I'd also like to have an Etsy business, but I dabble too much for any sort of consistent income. (Little enameling here, little jewelry here, a rug or two there.)

This is how I view FIRE.

I will probably drop to consulting part-time for a little while.  I enjoy being a consultant and working with different clients, but I don't like how much of my life it consumes.

I also plan to teach yoga.  My 7-10 year plan to FIRE involves becoming certified to teach yoga around year 5.  I love yoga and know it doesn't pay much (unless you open your own studio, even then.) but I would love to help others on their yoga journey.

I would like to find 3 or 4 seasonal things, like lawn product service (weed killer, fertilizer, winterizer) and walk-way salting.
And compliment them with 3 or 4 (or ?) service contract things, like tilling gardens, digging fence post holes (with a power digger)...
I wonder if I could make money renting a storage unit for the month of Dec., storing Xmas gifts for people and renting a van to deliver them Xmas eve or Xmas morning.  I might offer wrapping and assembly services along with them.

Seems like a common thing.

My would like to try jobs include:
yoga instructor
massage therapist
Fitness trainer or kickboxing coach
Line cook (I've always wondered if I could handle a dinner rush in the kitchen, since I've waitressed before)
caterer
Gallery/event coordinator

I'm sure I'd try more things if given enough time.

In college I worked in a warehouse where a UPS delivery driver would pick up packages every day. One day the owner of the company told me his story. He had made a killing in the oil & gas business, enough where he could retire for several lifetimes. Instead, he wanted to be active and work for UPS in the summers, and go to his ranch in Wyoming in the winters. So, he did.

Ever since I've held a little idea that once I'm "soft FIRE" I'll do something similar.

Absolutely. I want to promote bridge and possibly teach it in my area. Pay is awful so want to hit FI first, but the idea of retirement equating to chilling for 50 years sounds kinda blah.

FIRE about being able to sit around on your ass all day, it's about having the freedom to not do anything, for as long as you want, for whatever reasons you please.

So definitely, no.

Wooden boat restoration: I have a wooden boat & enjoy working on it.  I've thought about offering restoration services for other wooden boat owners.  I'll also likely buy a few on the side to restore then flip.

Bartending at the beach: Rent a place down there one summer, find a part-time bartending gig & live like a beach bum the rest of the time.

Workshop organization: A friend has a contracting company and has offered to hire me several times to come organize his warehouse/shop & keep it up.  I keep my things pretty organized (most of the time), and he always says 'man, if you ever want a job keeping my shop up you've got it'.  I think that would be fun on a very part-time basis.  It would probably require a big push at first, then just a few check-in's per month to keep things running smoothly.  I could probably offer this service to regular homeowners as well if I ever felt like it (not likely).

Random Errands for Businesses: I have several friends who run businesses & they often need random errands done immediately - and are willing to pay a premium.  A few weeks ago I got a call from a friend who was on a roofing job, had 10 laborers on the clock & needed a few buckets of sealer picked up from the hardware store in the next town.  He offered me $200, which I gladly accepted.  I'd imagine just having free time to be able to respond to random requests like that will be profitable if a large enough network knows I'm FI.  If the requests somehow begun to cramp my lifestyle I would simply raise the price!

My hubby does a little consulting in his field and now he is delivering flowers a day per week for a floral shop and loves it. I consult a little but teach a college course and that is something I never did before and love it.  The beautiful thing is that you can quit if you want. No pressure.

There's so much I want to try! I'd like to be a waitress, florist, cashier at natural foods store, English teacher abroad, something on a boat, something outdoors, and the list goes on. I think I'm trying to FIRE just so I can dabble in various jobs around the world.

Several! (I am based in New Zealand, hence it is rather Oceania specific).

- Join a sheep shearing gang
- Work a season on a fishing boat
- Work on a North Australian Cattle station
- Teach English somewhere a bit out of the way like the Solomon Islands
- Maybe even head to the UK and use my UK passport to get a job picking strawberries or something during the summer and make some Polish and Romanian friends!

Yeah, I think about it all the time - both going back to jobs I really liked as a kid, like various hospitality gigs, and trying totally new stuff for laughs. I think I would be a friggin' hoot if I showed up to be a barista or a tour guide with a bunch of people half my age.

Teaching English overseas is always on the table, and DW is a TESOL specialist (advanced degree etc) so she'd probably do it if we could agree on the ideal destination.

And, all along, on a more serious front, I plan on using my wealth and free time to promote energy reform and sustainable living in general. How and when, not really sure yet, but I have an EE degree and related experience that'd get me in with various residential industries.

IRP here.  Sorry you cannot work while being FIRE'd.  You obviously need that job or you couldn't do the things you want to do. /s

Yeah, I have a few ideas, mostly math related.  Tutoring, helping out w/ a local math team, maybe even teaching.

So wait...some of you want to work really hard and plan for things that most people don't even realize exist and then you want to spend your time doing menial work?

Sounds silly to me. I promise once you get a taste of true freedom you won't want to trade ANY of your time for anything other than what you truly want to do.

I guess I can see part-time work for social benefits - but I can think of better ways to socialize.

I can understand someone doing entrepreneurial type things, but part time work just sounds so "meh". I'd rather not commit any of my schedule to anyone or anything. If I feel like doing something, sure I'll do it. It might make me money - it might not. But making money after you have enough shouldn't be the goal anyway.

I think Uber fits the bill because you can drive when you want, you get social benefits, there's money involved, and it's actually pretty fun. I did it for a few months for S&Gs and really enjoyed it. But I wouldn't drive for Uber if there was a process of getting "hired" (yes there's a basic application and background check, but pretty much anyone can drive) or "quitting". It's completely on-demand - and since wages change constantly, that's what makes it suited for someone who is FI.

Incredibly, different people find value in different types of work.  I have a side job, and I fully intend to stay in it forever.  I coach a couple high school teams and I love doing it.  I don't see anybody here saying they want to do 'menial work', but what you find menial and what they do is probably different.

To each their own...I'm psyched to try a few things out that involve learning and mastering a craft that I'm interested in, or it provides a really good social environment (and some combine the two pretty well).  And after years of NEVER being off the clock in my career, I'd really enjoy being able to punch out after a satisfying day of labor.

Who said menial?

Working as a bellman at a hotel was one of the most entertaining jobs of my life. About the only time I had more fun was when I was in Iraq and volunteered as a barista at night, after finishing 10-12 hours of paid work. We laughed a hell of a lot and made tons of friends. I would absolutely do it again regardless of pay.

I also plan on doing a little real estate work indefinitely, because it's flexible and fun, and works out to a really high hourly, which will help keep my investments compounding so I can give shit-tons of money away someday. Who cares what everyone else does in FIRE? Make your own choice and enjoy it! :D

My thoughts are: find a gig where someone pays me to train me to do something I wanted to learn how to do anyway (and pays for materials).   Jobs that fit this are things like wood working, metal working, framing, electrician's helper, etc.  I'm not looking to be a master of any of them.  I just want to know enough to piddle in them in my spare time.

Some of that might be thought "menial".  To me it's just tinkering with stuff I would tinker with anyway.

Too many jobs to try: somelier, electronic technician, analog signal engineer, photographer, audio/sound engineer, venture capitalist. These are just the ones off the top of my head. I need 2 lifetimes considering it takes about 10yrs for one to get to be an expert; I still have 5-8 yrs to go in my current job/career/calling.

I have tasted freedom, well, as a SAHM.  I've worked very part-time here and there, but I'd love a part-time fun job.  Just enough to cover the bills while our stash grows. A part-time job for me means my husband can quit or go part time sooner.  So no, I'm not working really hard just to keep working later.  I've been on a break for almost 8 years and by the time start working again it will have been 10 years.  I will work as a teacher for 3-5 years then decide after that if I want to work part-time somewhere fun or work full-time as a teacher for a few more years.

Oh, another one I used to fantasize about: work on a Tahitian pearl-farming rig.

Hello, easy solution: do 2-3 of these things at any given time. Do VC but specialize in audio or electronics, for example, and taste wine in the evenings.

My hubby is an engineer and loves his p.t. gig delivering flowers. He loves to drive and loves the look on people's faces when they get the flowers.

I have several things on my list:

** Writing (This first and foremost. This is why I'm leaving my job.)
** Get WSET certification and write about wine. I'm considering learning Italian or Portuguese and traveling to learn more about my favorites.
** Sell home-made tempeh at the Farmer's Market
** I used to do audio work and I'd like to get back to that.
** I'd love to do some freelance database work (This is the best part of my current job and I'd enjoy doing more of it.)
** Perhaps teach SQL or similar DB skills.
** I've considered becoming a yoga teacher as well.
  ** Work part-time at a vegan restaurant.

Thought of another one. Work at a wildlife rehab center. Preferably wolves or raptors, but animals is animals and I love them all. Except geese.

I teach preschool full time and make about twice as much from a side gig. I go back and forth between wanting to quit every year (due to administrative nonsense) and wanting to teach for the next 50 (because of the kids). I think Freud (and those before him) were right about the keys to happiness being love (i.e., relationships) and work (i.e, purpose).

Northeast USA here:

Babysitting (in affluent towns pay can be $20 an hour)

Tax Preparer - simply need to take an H and R Block course - pay is around $10 an hour to start but increases with skills improving/time/number of clients.

Work at a book store (minimum wage in my state goes up to $11 an hour in January, 2017)

Look at part time gigs on Craigslist

Just put the word out - jobs will find you.

I enjoy menial work. But I don't want to do it and need the money. I don't enjoy being treated like a low wage laborer. I enjoyed working in restaurants but the staff/ bosses were so mean to me it's not worth it. But volunteering as an apprentice to a butcher sounds appealing.

And hoarders do hire organizers, or rather family and friends might pay for one as an intervention. Some organizers specialize in this.

I have always thought about working at a winery.  I would enjoy working in a tasting room, in addition to understanding more abut wine production.

My dream of all dreams would to be a motorcycle tour guide in far off lands!

I just saw a bit on an info-news show that there's a new service spreading across the country - Potty Trainers and/or Potty Training Consultants.

People are paying to have their kids potty trained or to be shown how to potty train their kids.

Not for me, but I thought I'd pass it along.

Aldi cashier.  I like cashiering and Aldi keeps their employees busy and they pay relatively well for the job.   Seems like fun - plus they let them SIT down while cashiering.

I would enjoy working at Aldi too, although I wonder if they would want you to work more hours than you would prefer.

The few times in my life I've been a cashier, I loved it. I probably wouldn't like a traditional grocery store where you had to bag the groceries, though. I find that stressful. But scanning things? I like it. My favorite was when I worked at my university's bookstore.
