Any Post-Coronavirus Plans?
« on: June 27, 2020, 02:58:56 PM »
This thread may be premature, but why not dream a bit while we've got the time?

So, if the powers that be were to announce a vaccine were available and things were going back to normal, what is the one thing that you most want to do?  Call it pent-up demand or just a little thing you've missed.  It can be large (around the world trip perhaps) or small (headed out to a restaurant, yeehaw!).

Or, if you haven't been thinking about it, what would you start to plan to do if news of a soon to be available vaccine came out, available in the coming months for everyone...

I'd hate to think that life goes back to the normal grind without having something of significance to mark the end of this.

For me, I'd look at half marathons either in the US or around the world and try to check off a few, either one a month or every-other month.  I've been getting in to tip-top shape in my spare time and I'd love to add that as a purpose to resume travel again.  I'm definitely missing international travel and I love how a big race really connects you with a time, location, and the locals.

I would probably not be among the first to be vaccinated because I want to see what side effects the vaccination would have so post-covid seems pretty far away.

Frankly the only thing I miss is international travel so that would be in my plans but I would want to see the effects of vaccination before I venture very far.

I will also not be able to spend any time at my grandfathers this summer due to the virus. This will be the first summer since I was a kid basically in 30 years when I haven’t spent time there. So when I know it is safe I will probably make a visit.

I've already been planning for next year with or without a vaccine.
I'm going to buy a cargo van and turn it into a camper van. We are going to drive around the US.

100% heading towards Europe.  I've been thinking about walking the Camino de Santiago for years, and was not in good shape for it.  Now I have lost weight and walking more, with a little more training, I think I'd be ready.  Also I'm pen pal dating a guy in Italy since March, it would be awesome to meet him.

We were planning and budgeting a trip to Sweden (fortunately hadn't booked anything yet). That's at the top of our post-COVID list.

I want to have a spontaneous dinner out with my husband and our roommate at our favorite taqueria. I miss going together as a household to do the week's grocery shopping. I long to get back to the prison book project where I'd been volunteering before the pandemic hit. I'd like to go swimming.

What a coincidence! Yesterday I was seriously discussing walking the Camino de Santiago with my mother in law as my first post vaccine activity, and today I spent the morning wishfully researching it! It’d be really amazing to spend a couple months starting in Paris and walking the Chemin de Paris to the Camino Frances to Santiago. I haven’t been able to find a good guide for the Chemin de Paris portion of the route though.

Hanging with some of our friends.  We have several friends that are in high risk category and have hunkered down. It will be nice to get together again and break bread.

Cider on tap.

Traveling.  We had a road trip across the US from Fl out to Ca and back.  If this drags into next year, we may still do something next year, but would prefer to have less restrictions that active virus creates.

Day to day -- a haircut. A meal out or takeout from anywhere without worrying how their curbside procedures are or wiping down where I put the takeout box or whatever. Seeing my parents whenever -- I do expect to see them pre vaccine also but bc they're 70+ now it's a whole think of me strictly staying home for 14 days first etc. Leaving my apartment ANY TIME I WANT -- live in a 20 story high rise so right now it's this whole mental calculus of timing it at off times to get empty elevators etc. Maybe buying a house. I'm 40 so overdue for a house anyway but no way I'm buying right now no matter what the rates look like when I have to go into other people's homes and/or do virtual tours.

A 3 day trip up to NYC. NBD for me because I'm a 3 hr Acela ride away, used to live in NYC, and make that trip at least 4-8 times/yr anyway. But 3 days in a luxury hotel, walking around NYC, eating etc. without worrying about who I've been close to or obsessing about wiping down a hotel.

Bigger -- a trip to Vegas (more luxury hotels) and then planning on getting back to London. I've been to London 2x and loved it and always meant to go back and then somehow 10 yrs went by so it's time.

International travel is the only thing I can think of. Oh, and I suppose it would be nice to attend a wedding again.

Everything else is already allowed here in Australia which is nice.

In a way, I am personally post-coronavirus since I had it back in early April (thankfully a fairly mild case). Despite this however, I am still observing all precautions since I don't know how long the immunity will last. The main thing I'm hoping for is that my younger daughter who starts college next year will have a reasonably normal college experience.

Saturday morning group runs.  My running group has begun to implement them with restrictions.  Which means we chunk up into smaller groups and if I don’t sign up early I don’t get a time slot with the people who run at my current pace.  Also we don’t get to go to coffee after either.

We had planned a family trip to Hawaii for Christmas this year but before COVID-19 we decided to scale that back to my wife and I (possibly the baby) going to New York City for several days. That's obviously been put on hold for a while but is something we'd still like to do. We've basically never travelled anywhere without the kids - and haven't flown anywhere with them since we only had two (about a decade ago).

I'm deployed so there's a whole bunch of other things I'm looking forward to once I get home, regardless of COVID. i.e. seeing my family, drinking a beer, experiencing something less than 100+ degree heat, deciding what I'm going to eat and making it myself, etc.

The big one is family visits. Too many elderly and or chronically ill relatives.

The little ones are zoos, national parks and visiting any area outside the western US.

Send my 2yo kid to daycare. In a freaking heartbeat.

I'm loving the extra time with him but it's just too much. I was never built to be a SAHM, much less one that is still working full-time and can't take him on playdates / socialize with other parents / go to the playground / etc. It's also difficult because we don't have any family nearby or other support systems in place to help out.

We are being as cautious as we can until we physically can't (when my husband returns to work in the fall as a community college teacher). This mentality has been reinforced by new information on coronavirus and treatments continually coming out- if we do end up getting it, which is seeming likely due to the US's terrible response, we want to postpone that inevitability as long as we can.

Our current plan is to get some sort of part-time childcare in September, regardless of what the COVID numbers in our area are or if we are still working from home. Maybe that's rash but I don't think we'll last all fall/spring at this rate. I'm willing to take on some risk.

I've been talking to a guy in Portugal. We made noises about meeting up and hanging out, then Covid hit and all that went out the window. I also have a friend in Las Vegas I would like to visit. And I would like to stand up paddle board in Biscayne National Park.

Actually, I've been thinking about going to Biscayne NP anyway. I wouldn't hang out anywhere except the hotel/ocean and stand up paddle boarding is a great social distancing sport.

Have you watched the movie "The Way"?  I'm leaning towards the Camino Frances myself.  I'm most concerned about day 1... there is a hostel that's half way up.  It's small but takes reservations (months ahead of time).

Hiking in the gorge. I would even be happy with taking a bus to a local trail on the other side of the river.

Then dancing.

Fortunately I got travel out of my system on my firebattical, so I don't miss that. Bf really wants to take a trip together when it's safe. I don't want to fly for environmental reasons, which restricts our options.

Apparently the pilgrimage has further continuations through France also.  My French teacher is from Le Puy-en-Velay which looks like a beautiful section of France to start the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage...  I'd be tempted to bike some of it, although I guess that is considered 'cheating'.  Fun stuff to research during the downtime though :)

Most of my family is overseas, many of them are elderly (though thankfully in good health), and I would really really like to see them.  I had also been planning a trip to Japan with friends this year that got pushed off due to COVID-- would also love to get that back on the calendar.

For the little things... cannot fucking wait to camp out at a cafe with my laptop, a pair of headphones, and a cup of coffee I didn't make.

Agreed. We are sending our children to summer camp, not full time, just three weeks. I know there's a risk, but many friends in my area have been using daycare since early June. So we are taking the leap.  We have family/support nearby but the issue, as with most parents I assume, is that we can't risk their health (and ours) during the pandemic. In many ways, I feel more comfortable with a professional caregiving situation.

I'm having a really hard time with this one... the pandemic has been very disorienting for me... hard to make plans or set goals not knowing what the future holds.  I'm a man of action though... I certainly have no shortage of day dreams but if I can't take concrete action then it's discouraging.  Disorienting describes this best for me.

Tomorrow, my oldest and I meet with a Coast Guard Reserve recruiter, and in August she leaves for college.

The younger ones are signed up for a theater camp through July, and might do a softball camp in August.

Resuming our Friday night game nights in person. Hugging my friends, cooking for them, laughing without worrying about how many viruses we could be expelling. Hugging my elderly parents. Heading out to Home Depot to pick up project supplies without the mental calculus of "how many maskless idiots will be there this time of day?". Doing normal quarterly stock-up runs at Target and not having t.p. rationed. Starting up projects without worrying about the likelihood of an emergency room run if something goes wrong.

Arguing with my health insurance provider about asthma inhaler coverage without worrying about their tight-fistedness killing me.

Doesn't sound like you're terribly worried about catching/spreading the virus.  I guess life goes on, even in NY!

Following the guidelines of the state, which is guided by medical experts, hotels and restaurants are open, so we took the trip.

Personally, I'm more worried about not getting the virus than getting it. If I don't catch this thing until much later, it'll be much worse. At least, that's how viruses have worked in the past.

Even NY? NY is doing very well - hospitalizations and death rates lowest since beginning and continuing to decline, new infection rate very low, highest masking wearing population of any state, phased reopening is highly regulated.  People can travel and participate in allowed activities under those conditions and taking precautions without much to worry about.

Little:
1. Go to the track when it opens and do my track workout
2. Go swim at the pool (it's open, I'm not going).

Big:
Travel. We have $3000 in United miles from the canceled Hawaii trip.  We have until April 2021 to book it and Apr 2022 to use it.

If a vaccine were to be announced tomorrow, I'd be hoping that I can stop stressing about the economic effects that are hurting a lot of people. My husbands place just had 15% staff layoff, mine had 10%. They happened in the same week. Neither of us figured we'd see layoffs in our workplaces, but even if we did we'd be fine the first round. If round two or three start happening we might hit the chopping block and be in a small pickle.

General: not have to wear a mask (not that it bothers me, but its just so symbolic of the whole situation right now), not get uncomfortable every time someone approaches me too closely, not having to worry if an event is indoors/large attendance leading to me declining RSVPs, and finding new ways that this is crappy for a lot of people. Today it was at the library, when a deaf man couldn't call the library for the curbside pickup. It made me also realize that he's been spending the last several months unable to talk to hardly anyone since he was likely relying on lip reading, in a world that everyone is wearing masks...

We were planning on a trip to Japan in March 2020 for our 5th wedding anniversary. We haven't officially benched the trip, but we haven't bought any tickets or reserved anything either. My MIL is still saying "I wanna travel now and get all of the good deals!" without realizing that international travel has quite a few uncertainties at the moment that could turn in to an unpleasant experience.

We had a month trip booked for August in Europe. We were going to 5 countries. The airline just cancelled the flight. Maybe next year but at 65 you never know. I have lost 5 friends in their 60’s.

Have you watched the movie "The Way"?  I'm leaning towards the Camino Frances myself.  I'm most concerned about day 1... there is a hostel that's half way up.  It's small but takes reservations (months ahead of time).

I haven’t seen the movie but my mother-in-law has and it’s on my list of things to watch. I’m thinking we’d start on the earlier side so the hostels wouldn’t be at capacity yet. Although given there’s 3 of us mentioning this as our post-covid travel plans, all bets might be off on hostel capacities!
