No, but I'd love to hear about how well it works -- would definitely consider it.

SD for me. Considering a move to the Pacific Northwest soon though. Rent here is super annoying, I've been living in a Van while working full-time these last 9 months. Sometimes it's a hassle, but mostly it's fun, and I've paid off my credit card so that's something.

that's great! so there is a few of us...

man, a van! that's ultra mustachian...

i love SD, it's expensive but there is condos for about 100-200k still so there is hope...

east county is actually a little bit of a hidden gem isn't it? lots of great places there...
alpine is beautiful in my opinion...

I'm a San Diegan at heart and still own a home (currently a rental) there.  Hopefully I'll make it back to San Diego someday.  (I currently live in Germany.)

San Diego has great weather for van living, right?

Rent looks high but still very nice compared to SF.

Transportation ... Probably need a car?

There are some neighborhoods (those downtown, North Park, etc.) which are very walking friendly so you could get by day to day with no driving, but unless you score a job in the same neighborhood, you would probably need to drive to work. There is a trolley system but it isn't especially robust.  There would be some scenarios where that could be used to get to work as it does service some major areas.  So I guess it would be possible not to have a car, but difficult in most cases.

Current San Diegan here, too! I live at the west end of Mission Valley, near USD and am a full-time bike commuter. (Got rid of my car about 8 months ago and haven't looked back!) You can make the car-free lifestyle work if you want to; don't let the rampant anti-mustachians around here tell you otherwise.

I'm going to be heading out of town on Saturday for a couple weeks (I'll be using Car2Go to get to/from the airport), but we should meet up some time. Anyone free Thursday or Friday evening?

I'm in North Park--hi all.

The only place I need to drive anymore is to work b/c it's 20 miles away, and even that I can bike to once a week! The weather is perfect here for biking all the time--the infrastructure is another story, but they're making massive changes in that area soon. And of course there is the bus! I've seen increasing numbers of Car2Go in the past year or so as well; now there is always one parked on my block. I can't imagine that a personal car is really needed anymore...

I've been lurking in these forums for a few months now, but just finally registered today so I could respond.

I'm in San Diego, Serra Mesa area, which is just up the hill from Qualcomm Stadium.

Pro-Mustachian things about San Diego that immediately come to my mind: The beautiful weather makes it easy to bike and to grow your own food in your vegetable garden (even if it's just a patio garden). Also, endless amounts of free, outdoor activities to enjoy... no need to pay $ for gym memberships or indoor entertainment here. Also, you're not very likely to have a need for heat or air conditioning in your house/apt.

Anti-Mustachian things: High housing costs and car culture.

North county here - car is definitely needed, house heat and cooling are pretty optional though ;)

I'm dating a man who lives in L.A., he skips the traffic and takes the Metrolink train from Union Station down to Oceanside on weekends and I pick him up (costs $15, or $10 if you get a weekend day pass).

I'm a native San Diegan!  :-)  North County Area.  I will say it's tough to live mustachian in SD but it's doable.  I switched from a car to a motorcycle several years back and that saved me tons of $$$ & time as well (being that I don't have to deal with traffic).  I own my home which has been DIFFICULT, especially since the housing bust, but I've managed to stick it out and pay down my principle balance to the point where my monthly costs are cheaper than renting.  I also rent out a room in my house which has helped tremendously.  I'm still working full time so I can build up my retirement account and pay down my mortgage and hope to hit FIRE in about 3 and a half years.  Soon I plan on trading in the gas motorcycle for an electric one which should lower regular costs even more.  Lowering costs is so much more fun than increasing income.

Anyone in San Diego make it to CicloSDias yesterday? I meant to ask ahead of time to see if anyone wanted to meet up but didn't remember until I got there. My husband and I went and it was fantastic! Five miles of car-free streets, tons of good music. We spent the whole day biking back and forth and stopping in all the shops we'd never been to. I was surprised how many bikes were out. Wish it could be done every week instead of once a year! :)

Where do you guys think the most mustachian area in SD is l, for walkability, free amenities, etc?  I was looking at PB for a while.

Depends mostly on where you work.  There are some places where biking is easier than others, and there are some public transportation options that are really good (the Coaster) and others that are really bad.  In my last apartment it took me about 10 minutes to drive to work, whereas it took an hour an a half by bus.

I'm thinking for semiretirement...  I'd probably do some remote work or find a random part time job near my home

Well PB certainly has access to everything that you'd need in semiretirement.  But it has a sort of college-y frat party atmosphere.  If that's what you want, it's great.  If not, I'd consider downtown, North Park, or one of the North County beach towns - Encinitas is quite nice.

I'd say North Park is probably the obvious choice.  Downtown has a ton to offer and good trolley access. Kensington might work as well, and Hillcrest would be another solid choice.

I lived in PB for about a year. I didn’t have the privilege of walking/biking to work but everything else was completely doable. I really enjoyed the accessibility of outdoor activities. Between the beach, parks, and fully paved path around the bay, I was in complete HEAVEN.
