Any MMs in the St. Louis area?
« on: July 06, 2012, 06:05:50 AM »
Hello.  My wife and I are budding MMs living in the St. Louis area with our soon-to-be-4-year old daughter.  We were just wondering if there are other MMs living in the area.

Also, hi to the other MMs on this forum!

How strange, I live in Gardner (just south of KC). Are guitarists flocking to KC?

Sorry to hijack your thread, Raman. I used to have a few projects in St. Louis.

I don't know about other guitarists flocking to KC, but I sure did! Actually, I'm recently engaged and moved here because she's finishing her masters at KU. We're hoping to move somewhere else soon!

I suppose my parents would qualify, although they don't read this blog.  My mom was a stay at home mother, my dad retired when I was... a senior in high school?  Something like that.  Now my mom is employed for fun/extra income because she wants to be (it basically involves getting paid to travel to various cities to teach a class about embroidery software), but it's certainly no 40 hour a week gig.

They live out in West County.

FINCON13 will be held in St. Louis on 17-20 Oct, so you'll have about 400 personal-finance bloggers clogging all the downtown hotels & restaurants.  Even if you don't attend FINCON, it might be a good opportunity for a MMM meetup.  PT Money (the FINCON organizer) also depends heavily upon the kindness of local volunteers.

No word yet on exactly where (which hotel) or when tickets will go on sale.

http://www.financialbloggerconference.com/save-the-date-location-and-date-of-fincon13-announced/

If you're thinking of starting a personal-finance blog (or perhaps just about any sort of blog) there'll be a "Blogger Boot Camp" on the 16th & 17th.

I had a great time last year at Denver's FINCON12.  I'm going to try to make FINCON13, too.  I've heard that the surf isn't very good, but at least I won't be gasping for air at mile-high altitude.

Currently in the city of STL. But am closing on a townhouse in St. Charles in a month.

Would be happy to take money off the FinCon folks at the poker tables downtown. ;)

That'd be an interesting event.  Many of us can calculate the odds, but we would view poker through the lenses of anti-frugality, loss aversion, and zero-sum gaming...

If you haven't already, you should check out the (unofficial) mustache map:

St. Louis looks a bit lonely at the moment, but someone's got to be the first!

They live out in West County.

I bet they aren't MMs :P (I jest).  I used to live in west county and that area is saturated with anti-MMs

I live in Maplewood.  I often bike to the CWE and North City (My biggest hobby is touring urban plight areas with a small amount of UrbEx).

While there might be a saturation of anti-MMs in some parts of West County, there are also some who have a frugal/sensible mindset.

We just keep a low profile and know how to blend in, by keeping our spending in check, and not pissing away money through various depreciated items and outlandish expenditures. :)

True True.  I moved to Maplewood to escape where I was.  You remember the hail storm in April?  The people living below me were complaining about how they couldn't afford to deal with the problem.  My rent was $640/month.  They certainly could have found something cheaper.  They showed up a few days later with a brand new, shiny car.  Now, my rent is $645 divided by 2, and I drive significantly less.

Anyone interested in an STL meetup?  Maybe in 2 or 3 weeks, unless someone has any ideas.  Though maybe a tad pricey, we could go to any of the many brew-Pubs in STL.

Linking up to another STL thread:
http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/st-louis-meetup-april-26-(sat-)-forest-park()/msg272859/#msg272859

Based on my reading, there are a solid 20-40 STL MMMers. I know a couple meetups have occurred. I'm open to more, and I think we were loosely thinking we would do another sometime in the fall. It's fall, so maybe it's time.

I'm a couple hours north of St Louis.  Go Cardinals!  I would not view poker as anti mustachian if you are a good player :).  I loved playing back in college at Mizzou.  Would love to get a regular home game going again.

I've been enjoying the frugal lifestyle in the low cost of living of stl. Does a low cost of living give more opportunities to do what you love instead of doing what makes you the most money? I ask this cause I have seen more opportunities for free live talented musicians in St. Louis than any where else I have lived. I have also met many travelers coming to the area for the music. Are they able to play more while charging less for the entertainment due to the low cost of living?

I head to just outside Monroe City a few times/year. I love it up there.

Anyone live in or near the Tower Grove South area? If you ever want to sip boxed wine in the park and talk about living cheaply in the Lou, let me know.

Welcome.

I lived in TGS for about 7 or 8 years.  Bought a house in St. Charles in Spring of 2013, though.

I'm in St. Charles.  All of my rental properties are in South City where we lived before moving to the burbs and the 'better' school district.

Nice on the free ticket!   Hoping for a KC STL world series.  Here at the lake there are lots of fans from both cities so it would be a very fun time at the sports bars.

Also STL'er here.

And since Cheddar Stacker merged the threads, I'm open to that "late" fall meeting, since it's late fall already!

On another oddball note, if we build a network of local MMM'ers, do we automatically get that much closer to FIRE by default?!
