  • I did decide to Fire in 2018 @Age47! :)
I travel outside the country multiple times a year.
I have an annual medical plan (GeoBlue) that covers $100k medical for outside the US for around $150.
I self insure for other travel problems like lost luggage, trip interruption, and trip cancelation.

Chase Sapphire Reserve is $550/yr but has $300 Annual Travel Credit as reimbursement so effectively only costs $250/yr .
https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/chase-sapphire-travel-insurance-guide

For $100 more i get trip insurance, lost luggage, access to airport lounges and $100k medical coverage per trip.

What do you think about just using the Chase Sapphire Reserve instead of buying an annual medical plan if you travel outside of the US alot?

It depends. How healthy are you? We use the CSR as our main travel insurance, but if DS 21 is along we buy additional insurance. He has asthma and allergies. Those make me nervous.

Chase might work. Or might be a nightmare. I wouldn't take the risk but if you do let us know how it works out.

At that magnitude of cost, I would be much more concerned about reputation / reviews / ease of doing business with / thorough & proven support, than saving a buck.

Are you doing business while out of the country?  Resident at all?  My old ex-pat policy from Chubb included property, auto, and travel insurance as one bundle.  I couldn't even separate out one facet, if I wanted to.

Make sure you understand that you are and aren't getting.  That "travel and emergency assistance service" is a referral service and doesn't cover the actual cost of that medical service.  At least that's how I remember from when I had this card and how I read your link.  Emergency evacuation up to 100K is one reason I kept the card when I travel overseas.  It's important to note (at least when I had it) that (a) evacuation had to be booked through them and (b) it was to the closest "appropriate" medical facility not necessarily back home.

If you travel a lot overseas I might be worth it tof have both the CRS and GeoBlue in addition to your regular health insurance.
