Allow me to introduce myself

~60k/yr - Live 5 Miles from Work
15k Student Debt

Background: The best way to describe myself is impulsive. I managed to get a decent job out of school (graduated May 2014) but largely my life has been steered by my impulses. If I felt like being awesome and studying in college I would binge study for tests and get an A. These grades however were balanced out by my inevitable crash in motivation afterwards where I would get a C on the very next test in the course. I always had a messy room, was very forgetful, disorganized, and irresponsible. All this to say I was a recipe for money mismanagement.

Current: Recently I had been taking small steps for self improvement, recognizing my character tendencies in an attempt to rectify them to provide a better life for myself. My very first step was consistently doing my laundry and immediately putting it away, along with keeping my room very minimalistic, neat, and orderly. I have been able to maintain this discipline for 10 months now (started on new years day). All this to say I recently got my financial house in order and in the process of doing so I stumbled upon this website. I am very excited about the prospects the future hold and I think with small steps I can continue to build on the progress I have made in my life as far as organization and discipline go (I have also managed to kick a nicotine habit as well as lift weights 3 days a week for an entire year).

Near goals: Pay the rest of my student debt off by this time next year and focus on reducing my restaurant food consumption.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and I look forward to learning from all of your posts and maybe providing some insight to others once I have fully ingratiated myself into the lifestyle.

Thanks.

Hi welcome.

You sound a lot like me although I'm not quite where you are yet. If you want you should post a case study in the ASK A MUSTACHIAN thread and they can help you figure out your finances. With a 60k income you should be able to finish off the SLD faster than 1 year.

I'm close to your age, always good to hear that people out are out there trying to lift weights and fold their laundry too!  Inspiring.

I'm not sure if you're being facetious or not (and rightfully so if you are!) I am aware that to most that simple act requires no discipline. It was hard for me though. I was a mildly depressed/impulsive kid in college and still am to some extent which is why I am celebrating the small increases in maturity. It gives me a sense of taking back control of my life.

Welcome!

Life is a learning process. And this forum can help you not blow your money. You're starting young, and there's room for improvement but if you know what you need to work on---and it sounds like you do---then that's half the battle.

Onward.

Welcome! You're pretty close to where I was out of college, except I didn't have student loan debt and lived farther away from work (although I moved closer the next year).  I made 60k and paid $1200/mo. for a downtown apartment, then moved in with a roommate really close to work for $4-500/mo. a year later.

3 years down the line I've moved cities, make $74k, pay around $750 in rent (live with gf now), and have around $90k between my 401k, IRA, and taxable account.  The girlfriend helps out a lot with staying un-filthy, but I have to admit I don't work out as much as I used to...

Anyway, you can set yourself up pretty well if you make just SLIGHTLY less wasteful choices than your coworkers/friends.  Three recommendations for you that will save you a ton:  Learn to cook and try to eat at restaurants max once a week, bike to work, find a roommate.

Hey man thanks for the reply. I have been mulling over the idea of living with my girlfriend as she lives in town as well. I do currently have a roommate which puts my rent at $475/mo for a townhome I stay in. And as you mentioned I am trying to cook at home more. That is a big one, I always out of laziness get home from the gym around 8 o'clock and the chicken isn't thawed out yet and I just say screw it and have food delivered. Same for lunch. The thing is, I enjoy cooking so I don't think it will be too hard for me to make that transition. I am currently looking for a bicycle. Thanks for the suggestions. How has it worked out you and your GF?

Sounds like me at your age. Harness and develop your ability to just "turn it on" to get A's when you want and translate it into the workforce. Not sure what you do, but you'll start making very good money after you continue to outperform your coworkers. Don't lapse into "C" mode. Always be on.

That laser focus which nets you an A and makes the impossible a reality is a huge asset. Not everyone possesses that personality trait/skill - hone it, improve upon it, ride the hell out of it. It comes in handy at work - but, here is the rub - in a professional work environment it will hurt you to revert back to C mode. It labels you as unreliable and inconsistent, which is exactly the way to get overlooked for the next promotion.

Anyway, welcome to the forum:) I am impressed that you are working on controlling your impulsiveness, it is always worthwhile to improve and change oneself. As long as you remember that you cannot control and change other people, you will be way ahead in the game of life.

The mess and clutter - wish I had tackled that tendency at your age. I was the opposite, I rebelled against an uber strict parent who was beyond uber clean. I swore the second I moved out, I wouldn't do a thing for a month, not my most intelligent or even rational decision ever.

It is a good thing Mr. R. is neither impulsive nor messy, but I still am to a degree. Funny about folding the laundry, he does not fold and put away whenever he does the laundry. Whereas I consider that simply a part of doing the laundry and can't understand for the life of me, why you wouldn't immediately put it all away, since the object of doing laundry in the first place is to remove the mess:) Go figure.
Perhaps in your case you are just now coming into your own - unfolding into the person you really are.

Do check the investment and the ask a mustachian thread. You might also be interested in the "Throwing down the gauntlet" thread and even the decluttering thread. You see, you are in good company here:)

Living with the girlfriend is great, but obviously your timing will be a personal choice.  The best thing I did cooking wise was get a chest freezer off craigslist, some reditainers from amazon, and make big batches of stuff to freeze.  We still cook fairly often, but on those days when nothing works out or we don't feel like making lunch, we grab a frozen portion of pasta sauce, enchiladasagna, beans, taco meat, soup, whatever and throw it in the microwave.  I'd also recommend getting a rice cooker and having rice handy, it'll stay good in the fridge for a week or so.

A quick saute of frozen diced vegetables, rice, and some frozen taco meat is delicious and <15 minutes start to finish (bonus points for a runny fried egg on top).
