Aereo
« on: October 12, 2013, 06:15:22 PM »
Hi all,
For those of you seeking an alternative to Hulu, try Aereo. We just got it. It is $8 per month and offers live streaming as well as an online DVR with 20 hours of recording time. You get all of your local broadcast channels just as you would with an antenna. Thus we are watching live baseball tonight for the first time in months. They do not have contracts. Here is a link. See aereo.com. Seems pretty good so far. They are only in about 8 cities for now but seeking to expand.
Best,
Neil

So you're saying that this is a good deal for people who can't receive local broadcast channels over an antenna, either due to some code restriction or lack of reception?  Because if I could get local broadcast channels through an antenna then it would be free.

Hi Nords,
I see it as a Hulu alternative. Both vendors provide an onllne DVR function. Both are about $8 per month. However, there is no live local or national news on Hulu nor is there any sports. An antenna is free to operate but there are reception issues in storms, indoor antennas are susceptible of poor reception, etc. So this is an option. You can also stream onto your IPhone, laptop, etc. I imagine that is not possible with an antenna. Does this clarify?

Good point; I was looking at the part about cutting cable and just going with free TV.  If spouse records broadcast TV to our TiVo (which has paid for its lifetime subscription already) then we'd have no other expenses.

The sticking point with that cost-cutting is HGTV and a few other channels that are still only available on cable.  We haven't really looked at Hulu or Roku or any other Internet bandwidth, and she'd want something that she could record and view at her leisure (along with fast-forwarding through commercials).

I just can't justify for paying for something I can get for free over the air.  You could just have an antenna and buy a Tivo if you need DVR functionality.  I also have a rewriteable DVD player/recorder that I bought at Target years ago and that works fine if you want to program it to record something while you are away.

Probably should be remembered that over-the-air TV is only free if you have a TV and an antenna. That's a pretty big startup cost if you've already got a good quality, biggish computer monitor.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
