A Mustachian Anthem
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:07:30 AM »
I wrote a set of parody lyrics for a Mustachian anthem after reading a post in Chedder Stacker's journal.   I hope you enjoy it.

If you're not familiar with Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, KD Lang sings my favorite version.

"Grow Your Mustache" to the tune of "Hallelujah"

I heard there was a secret code
That Mustachians learned and it opens a road
You don't really care for objects do ya?
Well, it goes like this: Invest and save
You have the strength! You're not a slave!
My Money Man was blogging: "grow your mustache"

Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache
Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache

Your income was strong, but you needed proof
Your lifestyle was manicured and couth,
You were afraid frugality would overwhelm you
But you saw the need to start anew,
You found friends online, like Dr. Doom
And A Rebel Spy was coaxing: "grow your mustache"

Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache
Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache

Maybe you were here before,
You walked this road when you were poor,
You lived a life that brought great joy upon you
You miss that life, it felt so right,
Look Cheddar Stacker has seen the light!
He adds his voice to call you: "grow your mustache"

Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache
Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache

Your spouse might think it's all in vain,
Or maybe they, too, play the game,
And coworkers might see a change come from you
You might still think the word is crass,
But you secretly become BADASS
And quietly tend to your new growing mustache

Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache
Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache

We do our best, we know we must,
Our comments declaring: "FIRE or Bust!"
Mustachians speak the truth, we didn't fool ya
'Cause even if the market's poor,
We'll save our cash or make some more
Until finally we can smile and stroke our mustache

Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache
Grow your Mustache, Grow your Mustache

My dad played me that song (KD Lang's version of it) this weekend. I've had it stuck in my head all day. It's kind of freaky that you posted it just now...

If we're sharing favorite versions, mine is by Rufus Wainwright:

For me, Jeff Buckley's version is the standard by which all others are measured.

But I have to say, Justin Timberlake (!) did an amazingly creditable job with this song during the Hope for Haiti (or whatever the Haiti earthquake relief effort was called) a few years back.

Nice work, ChransStache!

Thanks for the referrals.

No covers stand up to the original as far as I'm concerned. All hail Leonard.
