A little bit of theory
« on: June 18, 2014, 07:54:31 AM »
So, because I am not the smartest of men, I like to live by simple ideas.  "Keep it simple, stupid." is an example of one such idea.  Also, as FI has become a more defined goal in my life, I've looked for a good way to trim the philosophy of it to such an idea.  MMM has embodied a lot of the specifics, and has offered what he has a philosophy (increase income, use less, save money, make less of a negative impact on the environment).

But as far as a central idea is concerned, "Consume less; create more." seems to work quite well.  "Create" in this sense is DIY activities, work, volunteering, art, music, cooking delicious meals - any useful thing really.  And consuming is using any kind of resources for oneself.

Unfortunately, at its extremes, it's not tractable.  You'll die if you consume nothing.  Trying to produce something without consuming the energy needed to create that thing is laughable.  Thoughts?  Anyone else have a better version?

The answer probably lies in notions of the good life.  Strive to consume no more than needed to enjoy the good life.

Mustachianism is a less hardcore version of ERE.

Here's a good thread trying to summarize ERE without using financial terms:

Some of those ideas may help you in your quest to understand the Mustachian life simply.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Thanks arebelspy.

My favorite of those:

"ERE is what you get (or where/who you are?) if you pick up Maslow's ladder, give it a twist and then fuse the two ends together with an invisible seam."

Ah the good life.  I hear that phrase and start thinking about chatting on a back porch during a sunset.  Which I haven't done in a while...

Easily fixed, dear Grid. "Create more than you consume."

Consumption need not be zero. The only fact that need be true is creation > consumption. You could be bringing home a million a year and spending 900k - and that's (barely) Mustachian, because you are creating more wealth than you are consuming, and your future is better off for it.

Closer to the core of Mustachianism is moderation in consumption. So "Consume in moderation, and create more than you consume" might be a more comprehensive expression.

Another would be to focus on the joy of creation: "Seek happiness in creating, not in consuming." That applies not only to physical goods but also to relationships. A person who is FI is in a position to bring about a lot more happiness in those around them than one who is not.

Put them all together? "Consume in moderation; create more than you consume; seek happiness in creation." Expressed this way, there is a nice pun about creation - the act of creating, and Creation - the world around you.

I suppose there should also be an element of optimisation in there, but to me it is already implied in 'moderation' and choosing where to seek happiness. Let's not complicate things.
