5-7k raise for leaving
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:13:28 AM »
I've been frustrated and stagnant in my job for years.  The tech sector is good right now.

I interviewed with a few companies, and after a grueling 3-round interview process, I am able to say I'm moving jobs.

Minimum I will be making 5-7k more to start, have a shorter commute, and even though I'm sure there's stress, it will be a different kind than what has been raising my blood pressure for a few years.  Average raises and bonuses are additional to that, so I could make as much as 10k more.

The best parts:

I was salaried, this will be hourly.  OT, a rotating on call (I am in Desktop Support), and projects will be rewarded with overtime pay or some time off.

They are a bigger department, and ENCOURAGE you to learn other things, as well as move up within the company.  Many people have been there for 15+ years and say they enjoy it.

They're not so stressed that the departments can't help each other out when needed.

All of this means I hope to have some spare energy left at the end of the day to actually train myself to advance.  I've been spending too much $$ on 'coping' drinks and destressing.   Time to reign that in and get back on track!

I like my current boss/team, but it's time to go.   I'll miss them but won't miss the structure of the organization.

Looks like it perfectly fits into an IRA ;-)

Congrats!

Beware of survivorship bias in asking current employees how much they like their job.

And don't forget that the person who hired you could transfer, get promoted, heck, perhaps even RE. You may not like your new boss nearly as well.
Also, need to know what percent of your current salary 5-7k represents. Is that including anticipated OT?

Currently I make 50k salary.  This would be 57k, non-exempt (hourly).  So, OT, Bonus, etc, is anticipated to get me to about 60k.   Bonuses at current position have ranged over 6 years from $300 to $1500....

I do like my team, and several coworkers.  Just time to move on, and get a raise in the process!

It seems like there will be other opportunities there as well, as it is a larger and more diverse department.  Instead of being solo for 5 offices in 2 states, I will be part of a team that is local.  Bosses and other departments are also local.

No way!  I have the same commute, and I don't need to travel weekly to a much farther office.  Obviously, the next step is to spend 20k on a huge vehicle for my wife and I.  Definitely a RAM 3500 with dually tires, belching soot into the sky all day!   Time to buy expensive lattes daily,  buy only the finest clothing, and pick up a raging heroin habit!

All sarcasm aside, we will roll most of it into savings.  Next year is my wife's 30th and our 10 year anniversary, so there might be a bit more vacation spending (if we end up doing 2 that we want to, spread out, total cost would be about 5k).  Only because it's a special year, and we haven't put anything down on either of those, so they might not happen at all.  A couple of times we've nearly pulled the trigger, then figured out something cheaper/simpler we'd rather do.   I don't consider funds spent on travel to be wasted, so long as there is a high savings rate otherwise.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
