2017: Net Worth Increase vs. After-Tax Salary
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:01:47 PM »

Given the run-up in the market, I am curious to see how many folks saw their net worth increase more than their after-tax income.

Example:

A made $100k, paid $25k in taxes for $75k after-tax income.  A's net worth increased from $500k to $625k.  A's result:

Net Worth Increase > After-Tax Income

I haven't done my taxes yet, so I'm not sure exactly what my final net income is going to be, but it's about 65000 net; I increased my net worth by a little over 26000, which is 40% of net. It's not great, but I'm just starting this Mustachian journey, so it's good to know that I can get that even better over time.

I made $61,500, my wife made $3,500 and we made around $20,000 of rental income for a total of $85,000. We paid 11% federal tax, 6% state tax and 7.65% for payroll taxes.

Our after tax salary was around $64,000 and our net worth went up from 450K to 501K.

You need another notch on your poll.
After tax income $64k, net worth increase, $262k just over 4X.
The stock market has been stupendous!
Another year like 2017 and maybe even my wife will be impressed.
I printed a sheet with, Here's our net worth on 1-1-2017, here's our net worth
on 1-1-18 and here's the one year gain.
Oh, as she goes on about her business.
I guess I should splurge and take her out for dinner.

My income crushed my net worth increase.  Income increased by $72,000. Net worth probably closer to about $45,000.  Depending on the stock market and career trajectory, my net worth might beat my income in 2018.
