0% APR Credit Cards
« on: March 27, 2025, 10:43:03 AM »
This issue comes up every once in awhile in the forums.  This is a Doctor of Credit list of current credit cards which have intro offers of 0% APR for purchases and/or transfers. There's also a good description of what to ensure you understand about the offers.

0% xfers are a scam. They charge a 3% balance xfer fee. Some even charge 4% now because higher interest rates.
So it's actually 3% xfer.

0% purchases is good though if you know can pay it off by end date

It's extremely rare, but there are some instances of cards offering a 0% BT with no additional fees. If you check the DoC link above and got to the highlights at the bottom, there are a couple of offers with no fees on BT. Agree that it is more common that there is a 3-4% fee. It's like those No Interest checks that I still get from my CCs on occasion, some go up to a 5% fee. Pass.

Not a scam at all. The fee is clearly disclosed, and that's a pretty cheap rate if you need some extra cash that you'll be able to repay within a year.

It's been quite a while since I took advantage of any of those offers, but I've transferred $10k to a 0% (for a year) Chase Slate card with no fees whatsoever.

I did the same with a couple of Bank of America cards before that.

You do have to look around, but you can find cards with no transfer fees.

Don't think of it as a 3% rate; it's a one time 3% fee (or 4, or even 5).
Definitely not a scam.
Consider someone paying over 25% per month on a balance of $10k: they are much  better off paying $300 once and getting 12-21 months of zero percent.
Usually though, those who really need a zero percent balance transfer option can't qualify, or if they do qualify the credit limit offered is so low as to be useless.
