Currently I have three: road, 'cross, and mtb. I had two other road bikes, one of which I gave away to one of my students, the other of which I sold to a 12-year-old boy for $100 (it was carbon fiber and he wanted to race). I also gave my first mtb (Voodoo Hoodoo hardtail) to my then-boyfriend in Nicaragua, who proceeded to lie and steal from me; now he uses the bike for a bike-touring company he just started with his new Dutch wife. At least the bike went to a good cause.

As I get older, my cycling changes and I don't want such aggressive positioning on my road and 'cross bikes, and a hardtail mtb is too punishing in my new geographic location. Now I ride a classic steel road bike (Gunnar Sport), an old, steel 'cross bike (Surly Cross Check), and a full-suspension 26" aluminum mtb (Giant Reign).

I realized this weekend that I can't go MTB biking. I used my previous mtb to build a all purpose around town commuter with smooth tires.

Now I've discovered some great trails in my state and don't have a mtb to ride with my teen who is all about mtb these days.

I'll start hunting for something used.

- Scott Addict Gravel: Aptly named in my case.  This is my newest bike. Got it from a consignment retailer on discount. It spent some time as the floor model at a local bike shop. I love this bike. I'll grab a second set of wheels to mount with road tires when a roadie friend wants to meet up for a ride.

- Fuji SST: Got this as my replacement when I got hit by a car five years ago. The insurance company paid full MSRP for the bike that I got three years prior on discount and this bike itself was on a discount so the final cost of this was pretty minimal all told. Plus, the old bike gave me some parts to harvest as I wore mine out. I don't ride strictly road as much anymore. I'm likely selling this next spring.

- Kona Jake the Snake: My cyclocross bike for a long time. It is now beat to shit from being my cyclocross bike for a long time. I plan to use this as my daily commuter going forward.

- Foundry Broadaxe: Hardtail 29er. I stopped mountain biking after I had an accident and broke a bone. Really, I just realized I preferred gravel, dirt roads, and the type of riding I can do on a gravel bike over more technical single track. This was probably my dumb bike purchase because I just don't MTB that often. I should probably sell this one too. I also use this for my winter commuter in snowy weather, so maybe I'll keep it.

- Some Schwinn singlespeed that I got cheap and I use to run errands without having to worry about it getting stolen.

All five bikes have a purpose. Though the Scott is so versatile that it is going to replace at least one other. My biggest problem was commuting on the same bike I did offroad rides on (usually the Kona) which meant I often had issues where something was broken, or I'd get caught in a Denver afternoon storm on my way home and end up waterlogging some part on a bike that I'd like to race. By getting the Scott, I can shield my go-to bike from those problems.

Upkeep has been easier for me with multiple bikes, since I'm not under pressure to get maintenance done this minute to get back on the road.

This is an excellent point, and one of the advantages that I now miss since
I culled the herd.
