Skoda Octavia alloys
« on: August 19, 2019, 03:55:09 PM »
I drive a 2012 Octavia vrs.  It’s got 100k miles and other than wear and tear has been great.  I plan on driving it for as long as I can.

One of my alloys is “leaky” which means I have to add air every week or so to the tyre.  I’ve got a cheap machine that I plug into the lighter so it’s not a huge deal.

To get the one alloy repaired would cost around £70 and all 4 around £200.

Should I bother?

Do you have pressure sensors on the car? Are all drivers of the car good at checking it and topping it up? If yes and yes I'd leave it be; I have had a similar thing with mine for years and it's been fine. I wouldn't do it if my partner drove the car a lot though.

I'd repair it personally.

Yes I’ve got pressure sensors and they are working well. I’m the only driver of the car. I’ll probably just leave it.  Good to know I’m not the only one

Cool, I've been driving like this for around a decade, over two cars. The problem weirdly followed me from my previous car (like this).

Mmmm, personally I’d worry that it might suddenly get worse and give me a problem.   Older cars with 100k or so on the clock are likely to need the odd repair, goes with the territory I reckon.

Each to his own!

It’s partly laziness. With 2 young kids I find any additional tasks in my spare time feel like a massive burden, even when they’re not

On the other hand; if you replace the alloy, an older car could get a terminally expensive fault the next month. I don't want to tempt fate.

Sure, but it’s “just” a £70 repair- I’d pay it for the peace of mind!

With two young kids I would consider filling my tyre once a week an inconvenience. I would repair it to reduce wear and tear on the tyre, and the risk of having to replace the tyre early. Especially because of the inconvenience/expense of a blowout on a motorway with two small children. Source: had a blowout on a motorway once. Fortunately covered by AA membership, but involved a couple of hours on the hard shoulder in the dark.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
