UK equivalent of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund??
« on: April 18, 2018, 03:47:50 AM »
Hi there,

I'm based in the UK, and looking to find a way of investing in the Vanguard Fund mentioned on Mister Money Mustache, and 'The Simple Guide to Wealth' book by JL Collins, which I've just read.

The fund mentioned is the VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund).

I currently invest through Hargreaves Lansdown in the UK, and doing a quick search of their available funds, I've found many Vanguard funds available to invest in.

A full list can be found here:
http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results?investment=vanguard
(or just go to Funds in the main nav, then search for Vanguard).

This may not be a simple question - but which should I go for to hopefully achieve similar results to the VTSAX one?

Would it be this one?
Vanguard US Equity Index (Accumulation)(GBP)
http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-us-equity-index-accumulation

Or would I go for the global one?
Vanguard Global Equity (Accumulation)(GBP)
http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-global-equity-accumulation

Any advice, and examples of what people have gone for would be great!

Thanks for your help.

Zola.

I invest in Vanguard LifeStrategy 80% Acc, personally. Although there is a bit of UK bias, for me I think its solid.

Maybe this would be a suitable alternative for a less UK weighted index:

HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund C Accumulation

Playing with Fire UK

If you want one that is similar to VTSAX, I would imagine you would want one that includes 'index' in the name and that tracks the entire US stock market, which is what VTSAX does. There are also options to track the world stock market or the UK one. I believe LifeStrategy 80 is closer to being a traditional mutual fund, though enough like an index fund to lower the management cost. Even though they are low, the management charges for LifeStrategy 80 are more than double the cost of the management charges for Vanguard index funds available in the UK.

If you look through the list with the charges showing, most of the index funds have charges of 0.10% or less.

This one tracks the FTSE 100 and has the lowest charge at 0.06%: http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-ftse-100-index-accumulation

This one tracks the entire FTSE: http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/v/vanguard-ftse-uk-all-share-index-accumulation

This one tracks the US S&P 500:

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
