Wow - £700-800 is a lot particularly given the cap.  Our December bill was £75 for electricity and £170 for gas.  We did try to keep the heating reasonably low (set the thermostat to 17c and wore jumpers/fleeces as needed - but we had the heating on in the morning for getting up and again in the late afternoon/evening for getting home from school and kids' bedtime - so no suffering involved).  We are all relatively young and healthy though - I can imagine many more vulnerable people would need to have the heating set higher and for longer.  You also hear of people setting the heating to maintain a minimum of 15 or 16 overnight though, which must cost a lot and seems pointless to me (or even uncomfortable - I tend to sleep badly if I'm somewhere too hot). But each to their own I guess - a lot of it is what you're used to.

We live in a detached and very well insulated modernish home. Our annual consumption of gas and electric has averaged 18,000kw a year for the past 3 years.

I am really shocked about how much we’re spending despite the price cap. We seem to avg about £600-700 a month on gas and electricity at the moment (£20-25 per day according to the smart meter)

We keep our house at 19deg during the day except from 16:00 to 20:00 when the kids are back from school, where it’s set to 21deg- and the night temp is set at 16deg. All light bulbs have been change to Philips Hue LED last year. We run a washing machine 3 times a day, a dryer and a dishwasher once a day.
I don’t get why we spend so much…

Interestingly, we went on holiday 2 weeks in November and our electricity and gas consumption was still £6 a day while the heating was 100% off. This made no sense to me as it still points to a £180 monthly run rate!!
