Fire drill! Shoe fly!
« on: October 26, 2012, 07:47:05 AM »
I've spent a lot of time lately purging clothes and I'm pretty happy with where I'm at.  But there are a couple af areas that I've failed at.  Living in a tiny house, space is a treasure, and I am overrun with my own shoes and coats.  Now, I'm not a fashion bug, most of these shoes and coats are REI fleeces, rain gear, hiking shoes, boots, and the like.  But I have a LOT of those.  Too many.   Want to create some space with me?

1.  Haul out all of your shoes.  I'm not going to give you a number, just get rid of some.  Or many.

2.  Haul out all of your coats.  How many people live in your house again?  Hehe.  Strive to get down to a couple or a few coats.

Coats and shoes tend to be good sellers at consignment, so if you don't have a shop that you use, go sign up somewhere.  Or put them on CL.  Better yet, bring the coats, this time, to a coat drive in your town.

I like this.  I've got a box of shoes that I haven't sorted through since my move.  Now have something else to add to this weekend's to-do list.

I've only got one coat (and a nice wool cloak!) so I'm set in that regard :)

Just took a bag of shoes to the consignment shop yesterday. They chose the last 3 pairs I expected them to, but hey, $27 richer! Also posted a picture of all of them to facebook and sold 2 pairs to a friend for $40. The rest are going to the SIL. And I have so many shoes to get rid of because my feet completely changed shape after 2 back to back pregnancies.

Now off to survey the coats!

I probably have a few pairs I could scrounge up.

Funny aside, I just got done shopping at this local woman's home for kids clothing. I scored 10 full outfits from gymboree for 50 bucks. Assuming they each retailed for $30 (which is a low guess), I saved $250 bucks and got my kids dressed for the changing season. Many of them were never even worn because those kids have so many clothes.

Right then!  I have two grocery bags of shoes on the way to consignment as soon as I'm done with this post.  I would say that more than half of my shoes got the boot (bah DUM bum!).  Also, it seems that maybe I already did a purge of my coats and forgot, because I only have one coat and one vest on the chopping block.  I have five coats left, one is in the car for emergencies.  I have a raincoat, synthetic down lightweight coat, everyday winter coat, and dressy black wool coat.  ALL of my shoes, minus the boots, fit in my cubby by the front door now, no more shoe party under the bed.  :)  Yeah!

Okay, mission accomplished, for me!  And guess what!  When I dropped off my stuff at consignment, I had $18 on my account from years ago that I forgot all about.  The store policy is that after a year if you don't claim your money, it becomes their money.  Apparently they don't hold to that.  YAY!  So, I walked out with $18 in my pocket.  Shweet!

Good idea and WTG on the cash!
I own 15 pairs of boots, sneakers, mocs, heels, snow boots, flip-flops and sandals. That's about as low as I can go I think. I keep one good pair and one muck about pair in each category. As the good pair becomes worn, they become the muck about pair and the muck about pair is tossed. With heels I tend to buy new at super discounted prices(never more than $15 pair), keep for 5-7 years, donate them and again buy several new pairs more in the current style.
I personally own only two coats and 4 jackets. I pared those down by half before I moved this year. ;)
Now the kids are another story. They need a decent purging of outgrown coats and shoes and I did plan on doing that this week. I'm sure I could fill a 30 gallon trash bag to donate between the three of them. :/

Good idea! This should be the motivation to get rid of some pairs of shoes. I have two pairs of hiking shoes (yeah, what?, why two pairs?) that I think I could sell to get a bit of cash. And a pair of ballet flats that I should throw out (I think they're beginning to rot. Yay for $5 shoes).

Other than that, I own a pair of heels, boots, converse, runners, thongs, and sandals x2.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
