Wear all the clothes in your closet challenge
« on: January 14, 2018, 04:21:28 PM »
One of my NY resolutions is to buy fewer clothes and actually wear all the stuff already in my closet.  I've been taking various things to the tailor (I'm not mustachian enough to do my own sewing) and trying to organize my closet so that I can see all the things I have and actually wear them.  I have a few questions though:

-what do other mustachians do about shoes that pinch or are uncomfortable?  I often find that, particularly, with sandals, I just need to break them in.  However, my favorite pair of sandals bit the dust last summer and I only have a few pairs of unfomforable sandals left in my closet.  Any suggestions for ways to break them in so I don't get blisters this summer?

-I was taught to wear navy shoes with navy pants/tights and brown with brown, black with black.  My last pair of navy tights got laddered so I wore (gasp!) black tights with navy shoes a few days ago and I doubt anyone noticed.  Do you break these kinds of 'fashion rules'?  Am I just crazy that this is how I was brought up?

-do you have different coats and jackets for different temps?  My wool coat had holes so I threw it out.  I have a puffa jacket and a lined rain coat. Maybe I don't need to buy a new wool coat?

Anyone else up for this challenge - I'm trying to 'shop my closet' and find ways to wear what I already have without buying new stuff,

I'm not sure whether I was every taught to wear the matchy-matchy color tights and shoes, but I do.

What does "got laddered" mean?

I'm in on this challenge. (I'm also in on the no clothing purchase in 2018 challenge, and these two challenges go well together.)

This is a fun challenge.  A.  Lets make the rule , wear everything that fits.  lol, i still have clothes from college that I could not fit into with a shoe horn. B. It's easy for me to take the the buy no clothes in 2018 challenge. Im 60 years old and have never bought clothes in my life. My mother bought all my clothes till I got married and my wife has bought all my clothes since.  I keep telling her not to buy me any more , cause the old ones arent worn out yet but she keeps saying crazy stuff like bell bottems and polyester leisure suits are out of style.

I'm in for this one. I signed up for the "only necessary clothing" challenge, and also turned all of my hangers around so that I will know what I actually wear in a year. I have very few occasions for nice clothes, and I usually wear trousers or a long skirt so I don't have to wear tights.
I think "Laddered" is British for what Americans call a "run".  I donated all of my uncomfortable shoes to charity after my feet grew when I was pregnant with my first son. I definitely have different coats for different temperatures/activities, but I live in Minnesota, and I have downsized this a bit as well.

I have given up on uncomfortable shoes. My last uncomfy pair I gave away in a donation box, almost brand new. I just don't want to ruin my feet on bad shoes anymore. Unfortunately you cannot always tell in the shop which ones will be right. My latest pair of winter shoes was an exact copy of the ones that I'm currently wearing and that are at their end. I was very happy to find another pair on the internet of shoes that I know will fit well.

In hiking shoes and skiing shoes, I wear numerous pairs of socks. Thin inner socks and one or two pairs of thick woollen socks. This helps padding the shoes. Sports shoes need to be studied well in the shop. Isn't there a big crevasse between the inner sole and the shoe? Because this will give me blisters. On my last pair, I tried taping my feet before wearing the shoes, but I kept getting deeper blisters under the previous ones. Eventually I bought a new pair on sale.

-do you have different coats and jackets for different temps?  My wool coat had holes so I threw it out.  I have a puffa jacket and a lined rain coat. Maybe I don't need to buy a new wool coat?

I have my jackets, all of them bought on sale. One even with a commercial print on them for really cheap. I even have a long woollen coat that I seldom wear. I bought it (on sale) in case I want to wear a long dress in the winter. But I seldom wear it because jackets are so much more practical. I am wearing the same down winter jackets for 5 years now. And I have a goretex coat and 2 hiking jackets, one wind proof and one not so. I also a leather summer jacket and a longer autumn coat (that was a gift).
If I were you, I wouldn't buy a new coat right now. Wait until you feel that you need something new and then wait for the sale. I buy a new coat when you suddenly find something in a sale that you could use.

I recently through/gave away half of my t-shirts, a lot of sports clothes, a lot of underwear and socks and some other stuff. Everything that I didn't wear in the previous years and didn't want to start wearing. So the remainder should be wearable. One exception is a really nice blouse (the cloth is nice), but the blouse is too tight. I am planning to turn it into a top of some kind for the next summer. My DH is very good at sewing so either he can do it, or he can help me doing it. We have already figured out that it isn't possible to make the blouse wider in a decent way.

I have some time off today so I'm going through my closet.  Linda - I may just have to give in and buy a new pair of comfy sandals this summer since all my remaining sandals give me blistered.

Miss Piggy - Got laddered =s the tights got ladders in them.  Not sure how to explain that but that's what happens to tights when they get holes in them.

The sales are on here right now which is why i'm thinking of getting a new wool coat with the department store gift card my boss gave me.  Linda -Norway - funny I always buy long wool coats as I wear skirts and dresses probably 75 % of the time during winter and 99% of the time in summer. I find shorter jackets aren't practical as my butt gets cold. In the summer it's way too hot here to wear anything but skirts and dresses and I walk to and from work every day.  I find skirts and dresses are also the most comfortable in winter (with leggings or tights plus boots) as well but it doesn't get that cold here.

Good idea to spend a gift card soon. All too often people forget about them or lose them.

I agree you should use the gift card to get a new wool coat. My own wool coat got rips in the lining, so I got it relined . . . I think these coats can last a very long time if one is willing to do those types of repairs, so be sure you get a classic one that you really like.

I have worn black with navy. No one cares or notices where I go, but I travel in pretty nerdy circles, so that could be why.

I'm in. I just did a big organizing of my walk-in closet, and have to say that I'm doing a pretty good job of minimizing "things" and not having the space full of items that it seems like I would wear...but I don't. They really should be donated to charity or discarded. But I still have too many "just in case"   or "but I might possibly wear this...in the year 2025...on the planet Neptune."

This is a great thread.

I'm in.  I purchased The Curated Closet and the accompanying workbook about six months ago.  I'll start reading today and try out the exercises.  I've purged my closet in December so everything left I "should" want to wear but I do find that I wear the same items over and over again.

I also need to purchase dress pants and tops, the problem is my athletic build makes it hard to find pants that fit in both the thighs and hips/waist.

Yup, need to do this. I probably only wear 1/3 of my clothing regularly. However, every time I try to clear out my closet I find items and think "oh, this is nice, I will definitely wear it now!" And then I don't.

I like the turn around hanger idea, and I'll steal that for my tops and dresses. All my pants/sweaters/socks/sweatshirts/tank tops are folded in dresser drawers though. Anyone have ideas for an easy way to mark what you've worn when its in a dresser?

We have a chilly snap this week (for Southern CA) and I pointed out to DH that if he isn't going to wear his sweaters this week, he needs to have a think about what circumstances he would wear them in.

For the sandals, I wear them around the house with a pair of socks. If they don't stretch out that way, off they go. With the pair of shoes currently on my feet, I also had to break them in slowly. I wore them for a half mile walk one day and changed immediately into the old ones. I carried both pairs around for like two weeks before I could stand the new ones all day. This is why I hate ordering shoes online!

Life is too short to wear uncomfortable shoes and I would donate them.
We call "laddering" of hosiery getting a "run" in the US.
I've been working on culling my wardrobe over the past year, and now that I've retired from corporate life, I should be able to reduce even more.  I can't quite let go of some of my favorite work clothes though, even though I live in jeans.  I might just need a little more time for some of it.

Closet is now organized - jackets, then dresses, then skirts/pants, then shirts.  Also organized drawers and put a bunch of clothes that don't fit or I never wear in a bag to be donated.

I'm going to try the walking around the house in socks and my sandals that give me blisters idea to see if I can break them in.  I have really tender feet so this is always a problem for me.  I also read on the internet that you can kind of 'stretch' the leather with a hair dryer.

I found quite a few nice things that I forgot I owned including my pearl earrings (wearing them now), some cute green suede shoes that I'll wear to work tomorrow and a few other things.  A lot of my closet is more than 12 years old as I used to spend quite a lot on clothes back in my high earning days.  I need to wear those things again.

About the breaking in of shoes... The (Norwegian) military used to provide leather shoes to the boys who has to do their military duty for a year. They would typically have to walk in very wet conditions, the shoes getting soaking wet. And then walking for many miles a day. After some time, the shoes would be nicely adapted to their feet. Walking in wet leather shoes forms them to your feet.

There is a product out there, Glide Body, that helps reduce chaffing/blisters; I have friends who swear by it, using it with every new shoe. It might be helpful for breaking in sandals -- it's a little pricey but cheaper than giving away new shoes.  I rely on my cobbler to stretch shoes that pinch a bit.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
