Track your 2025 savings goals and progress!
« on: January 04, 2025, 01:22:43 PM »
Kicking off the 2025 savings goals and progress thread. Grateful for last years thread, which helped keep us on track/focused!

Below is our initial savings goal by account/area as of today- some amounts will change due to raises/bonuses, etc.

I'm currently "funemployed", but would like to go back to work at least part time. I'll guess conservatively on our goals as a result.

-Max 401Ks - $54,500 (one spouse eligible for catch up contributions) (assumes I get a job)
-Pay for college for two kids out of 529s
-Save another $20k if I don't get another job, and $100k if I do.

Very simple goal.  Currently working half-time.  With a lot of vacation home expenses completed last year that prevented this, I'm hoping this year I can max out my 401k (the only investments I'm still adding) and live off the remaining salary without touching any stache.

One kid just now on their own, one in college paid out of large 529, one still in High School, so that's all in a constant transition as well.

Thanks for launching the thread, @Finwiz

As of March 2024, I'm FIRE'd but my spouse is still working. I am doing some very part-time consulting and that is only through the end of June, so our goals are modest. Also, the cash savings may get spent during the year (we continue to save for solar, HVAC, vehicle, possible 2024 taxes, possible purchase of adjacent strip of land, vacations) so that number increases/decreases according to what is spent versus saved.

The primary goal is continuing to max out the TSP bucket and not draw from any investments until we are both FIRE'd. Here's hoping we can make that happen this year!

2025 Savings Goals

Bucket         Goal  |   Actual
TSP        $ 29,300  | $  (includes match)
Cash       $ 10,000  | $
-----------------------------------------
Total      $ 39,300  | $
Progress             | %

I think we saved about $200k last year. This year we'll pull back a little and focus on a bit more on travel and some home upgrades (new windows, etc.). My wife and I are finally going to get to Europe! Only took us 15 years of marriage and both being over 40.

I'd like to set a goal of ~$175k in savings.

Invested    / Goal
401k 1: $1,216.47 / $23,500
Match 1: $456.18 / $16,500
401k 2: $0 / $23,500
Match 2: $0 / $2,800
HSA: $360.80 / $8,550
IRAs: $0 / $14,000
529s: $0 / $10,000
Brokerage: $414 / $60,000
ESPP: $86.25/ $2,100
Real Estate Note: $0 / $5,000
Mortgage Principal: $840.65 / $10,500
====================
Total: $3,374.35 / $176,150 (1.92%)

2025 Goals:
Bucket

401k          $ 23,500
401k Match    $ 20,100
HSA           $  4,300
Mrtg. Prin.   $  5,500
Taxable       $ 66,600
-----------------------
Total         $120,000

Comp adjustments are in and I'm going to shoot for 120k. My current projections have me a little north of here, but don't account for some house projects I may do, so it feels reasonable, but not a given.

I'm in. Last year we both left our careers, sold our house, and moved to a new state. So after such an enormous change, my goal for 2025 is fairly simple: to make forward progress in our savings.

All the projections in the world did not help us figure out our 2025 budget because the housing market is so insane in our new state. We put an offer on the least expensive house that would serve our needs (and one of the least expensive on the local market), it was accepted and we should close end of Jan or Feb 2025 at latest. That means we will go from having zero mortgage to having a 300k mortgage with 6.375% rate (but that is our only debt). So this year the goal is to get our new financial situation in order, draft a new budget, and save the highest percentage we can given our situation. Both of our new jobs put a percentage of our earnings into a retirement account but I'm hoping to save beyond that (since it is like a pension system that we may or may not follow through with). I don't want to put an exact number on the savings goal this year yet since so much is unknown, for now the goal is to pay the bills, spend a little on quality experiences, and save as much money as we can given the new expenses. If we manage to get the numbers in order this year along with a set monthly automatic savings, I will consider any forward savings progress a win. So I am going to be tracking savings as a percentage of earnings.

2025 is my last full year of work, but I don’t plan to max out anything except the HSA and ESPP.  At that, ESPP might not even be kept long term.  I plan to put in at least the minimum for 401k match.

I blew past my FI number in 2024, and there’s a lot of travel in the works for 2025.  So the plan is to cash flow all the travel this year, use up a bunch of vacation time and let the existing stash continue to grow while adding a smaller amount to it.

Joining late, because I'm having a hard time setting goal. Just tacking $1K on to lasts year's goal, but the intention is to adjust that as I settle into the new year's budget (December raise, rent will change). Probably late spring.

Use a font where all the characters are the same width. I use
[ font = courier ] before and [ / font ] after the table. Without the spaces.

An easy way is to quote my post and copy/paste the part you want. I originally  copied mine from someone els, with permission.  Now it's your turn to copy!

Ok, let me try again :) Thanks oneday :)

So last year I saved approx $12000 but I included my pension (taken from my gross pay) in this amount (around $3500). This year I want to save minimum $12000 again, but this time only with my take home pay. If I reach this goal before the end of the year I will adjust.

TFSA$4000|$0

A bit late, but joining the 2025 thread. Here are my goals for this year:

The percentage goal for me to be on track for Setting Goals is 0.00%.

Bucket              Goal                 Current
401K$23,500$0.00
Match$3,300.00$0.00
HSA$4,300$0.00
Brokerage$26,300$0.00
Dividends$2,500$0.00
Emergency Fund Rebuild$31,000.00$0.00
Donations$26,300.00[$0.00
Total$117,200.00$0.00
Percentage100%0.00%  (0.00% of goal)

Update:
2024 was a total reset on my entire life in most ways, including financially. Now it's time to rebuild. While I have some monster goals on this list and expecting to record zeros on them for awhile, I'm selling my house later this year and that should come with a significant payout.  In fact, I'll probably hit most of these goals when that hits, assuming I'm not way, way off on my expectations.

Either way, here's to 2025.

The percentage goal for me to be on track for January is 8.33%.

Bucket              Goal                 Current
401K$23,500.00$0.00
Match$3,300.00$0.00
HSA$4,300.00$41.67
Brokerage$26,300.00$0.00
Dividends$2,500.00$111.67
Emergency Fund Rebuild$31,000.00$0.00
Donations$26,300.00[$0.00
Total$117,200.00$153.34
Percentage100%0.13%  (-8.20% of goal)

Update:
Pretty far away from my goal at the end of January, but that's to be expected. 401k stuff won't start until April, most of my other big savings should start in March. And my big catch up will be whenever I sell my house. Between now and then, it's going to look rough.

A bit different with our savings goal this year as we have surpassed our FI number and are marching towards Fat FI. With any luck we may hit it end of 2025 with average returns or next year just with our contributions and zero return.

Will continue to max out our retirement space (401k, IRA, Roth IRA) but will focus about half of our after tax savings on some debt pay down. Bought an EV that has a high interest car loan ($19k @ 5.89% 3.5 years left) that needs to be paid off asap as well as a 0% credit card bill (heat pump installation) that needs to be paid in full by April (~$5k). We recently paid cash for solar/battery storage installation and a new roof end of 2024 so we need to replenish our cash since we are severely depleted at the moment.

Goal is $60k contribution to our investments and raise our cash position back up to $50k (1x expenses). See you at the halfway mark!

The percentage goal for me to be on track for January is 16.67%.

Bucket              Goal                 Current
401K$23,500.00$0.00
Match$3,300.00$0.00
HSA$4,300.00$3,883.34
Brokerage$26,300.00$0.00
Dividends$2,500.00$130.31
Emergency Fund Rebuild$31,000.00$200.00
Donations$26,300.00$0.00
Total$117,200.00$4,213.65
Percentage100%3.60%  (-13.70% of goal)

Update:
My commission checks each month are a bit of a mystery. The way I get paid is sort of weird. The upside is extremely up, but it's practically impossible to know what I'm going to make in any particular month until it hits. Anyway, this month was much higher than I expected and puts me on track for a pretty good year. I got way ahead in a few areas and was able to contribute to my HSA, which was nice.

Update:
It's been a weird year, financially. After the financial atom bomb that was 2024, I've spent the better part of Q1 rebuilding my finances to have the best foundation possible going forward. For me, having a bunch of little savings buckets in addition to my emergency fund is important. These are places where money just sits and earns interest until I need it - insurance payments, medical out-of-pockets costs, counseling, yearly subscriptions, car repairs, etc. Most years, I zero out whatever remains in these funds at the end of December and rebuild my budget for January filling up these buckets back to full for whatever amounts I'll need that year.  Because of 2024, I started the year with these buckets at zero, so most of my extra monthly funds have gone to rebuilding this foundation. Up until now, I haven't been tracking this here, I'm not sure why I made that decision - maybe I'm just sad that I had to start over. Regardless, I'm adding these in now as the "Rebuild" category to better track how much saving I'm doing. It really beefs up the numbers when I don't hide most of my savings. I think I'll have this fund mostly done by the end of April, which should dramatically accelerate filling up the other funds. I'm looking forward to my progress now that I'm tracking against reality! Suddenly I'm much closer to where I should be at this point. Turns out I'm not failing, I just wasn't reporting accurately.

In April, my 401K finally kicks in. Maybe I'm spoiled, but having to wait six months to start contributing to a 401K feels extremely outdated. If I had known there was a six month waiting period, I think I would have negotiated that as part of my hiring. We're here now and I'm excited to see that number start to go up. Losing 3 months means it's going to take a bigger hit out of each check than I originally planned, but I'm not too worried about it.

I expect a sizeable commission + Q1 Bonus at the end of April, so fingers crossed next month sees another massive jump. There's even a small possibility it could get me all the way to positive. But most likely that'll happen in May or June.

Anyway, happy March! Here's to April!

2025 has not been a good year so far for savings, but I suppose tracking will at least help me measure how we're doing (for better or worse). DH was recently laid off, DS18 just decided on his college choice, and we owed an absolutely eye watering amount in taxes. (Mostly because my 2024 severance was taxed at a level well below our standard withholdings.)

Here's where things stand:

-Just paid the IRS/state for taxes - $87,340. Was able to cash flow some, use DH's bonus & pulled the rest from savings
-DH was able to max his 401k with his bonus. I'm still not working, so no 401k progress this year
-Current savings (I'll count this in two ways, as investments are up & down quite a bit) = $1,069,124 (with stock) & $753,579 without my single company stock included. I'm still trying to divest from company shares from previous employer.

Goals for April:
-Bank DH's severance
-Set aside tax money from DH's severance in a CD
-Figure out cash flow management with COBRA & severance/investments
-Get a job (me), possibly DH

Not quite, but almost! It's a 10% match and I'm currently contributing 10% (with the plan to raise contributions a bit later in the year to max out)

I am more than halfway through my goal, less than halfway through the year! Can't wait to max out the FHSA so that my TFSA can finally have some attention.

Our context:
  • As of March 2024, I'm FIRE'd but my spouse is still working.
  • I am doing some very part-time consulting.
  • The cash savings may get spent during the year so that number increases/decreases according to what is spent versus saved.

Late April update:

Goals for April:

-Bank DH's severance - so far, we've received his vacation payout, which was over $20k, so that was a nice increase to the savings account. We should be getting the severance in a few weeks.
-Set aside tax money from DH's severance in a CD - should have this in a few weeks
-Figure out cash flow management with COBRA & severance/investments - plan is to use our HSAs to pay for COBRA, until one of us has a job. Severance will more than cover our expenses for 6+ months.
-Get a job (me), possibly DH - a huge work in progress, but lots of things in motion.

Rebuild$37,684.78$35,684.78
Total$154,844.78$44,871.33
Percentage100%23.24%  (-4.36% of goal)

Update:
Another good month, income-wise. the 401k finally kicked in. There should be a match too, but I guess my company doesn't show the match on paystubs? I have to ask HR about it tomorrow.

I'm on track to make 40% less than I made last year, so that's not great. But I'm also finally starting the process of selling my house, which will solve all my cash problems for awhile and put me in an amazing space financially. I'm also almost done with my various rebuild funds - I should have that finished next month. Once that's in place I should be able to fill up my charitable donations and emergency fund pretty rapidly. Once that's all in place I'll be able to start investing again. I feel like I'm missing out on stocks going on sale - but I'm also expecting numbers to stay low for a bit. So, who knows. I'm okay not trying to keep up with the market right now as I rebuild my life.

All-in-all, I'm in a good place savings-wise and I expect June to be just as good!
