No lights until 6 pm
« on: May 31, 2014, 10:47:49 AM »
This might sound easy: don't turn on any lights in your house until 6p.m.

I started doing this last week, when in noticed that out of habit I was turning on the lights in rooms even though it's summer and the sun is shining! I'm working from home right now, so the lights being on will really add up on our electric bill.

It's not hard - just one of those catching a bad habit and trying to fix it challenges.

I like it!  Challenge accepted!

Add to this: no air conditioning until the inside temperature goes above 86ºF (30ºC)

anyone else have an add-on?

We have LEDs and CFLs in our house. All lights combined consume as much power as heating water for 3-4 cups of coffee, baking half a bread, or pumping the water for a single shower...

6 PM likely depends on your location... It's 10 PM here, the lights are still off, because the sun hasn't completely disappeared yet. It'll be different in a few months when it'll be completely dark by 4 PM. ;-)

It's dark at 4:30pm here, and getting darker as it heads toward winter.

ha, yes it really does matter what latitude you lie at. Where I'm at, it doesn't even get dark until well after 7pm...and more so as we reach the solstice.  I think I'll make my challenge 8pm instead.  This will force me to enjoy the outdoors a bit more. :)
