I'm in! I've started this a week ago, after finishing Can't hurt me by David Goggins. What a great book!

- 100 runs (95 to go)
- 10,000 push-ups (9,920 to go)
- 1,000 pull-ups (1,000 to go)

I also wanted to run 10km, but I thought it was very hard to achive - and today I ran 8km, without a huge effort. I would have run 10km but I had to catch a train in the morning :) So my new goal is 10km in an hour or 12km without watching the clock.

I'm in.

Just started really working out again now that I live in a building with a gym and pool.

I've spent the last several years rehabbing some serious injuries, so a lot of physio, and light walking, but nothing at all intense or vigorous and as I'm aging, I'm really feeling the loss of strength.

I have to be extremely careful with my joints, but I'm cautiously back to lifting, "swimming", and stair climbing (I'm on the 18 floor).

It's "swimming" in quotations because of my shoulder, I'm not allowed to do a proper stroke, especially not repeatedly, so it's mostly just kicking, which is easy with a snorkel.

I may also reintroduce some Pilates. I used to love it.

No weight loss goals, I lost a ton of weight and have kept it off for years. I fluctuate +/- 15lbs depending on my meds, but BMI always stays between 19-22.

Thanks for starting this!

Work out - 3 times a week for cardio, 2 times a week for yoga/strength training
Run a mile under 10 minutes on the treadmill (yes, this is slow, but I just started running)
Continue eating at least two bags of Aldi salads a week (Southwest and Asian are my favorite)
Add more fruits and veggies to lunch and decrease other stuff
I gained 10 pounds this year but I still have a normal BMI.  So I just want to maintain my weight and not get higher (I'm approaching 40, and I now see the difference age makes or seems to make on metabolism!)

So, I'm curious, how will the sleep improve after today?  I have just started getting regular sleep and it's amazing. I'm getting 7-8 hours a night.  I feel groggy though, like I slept too much.

If you want to sleep in a "super scientific" way, try sleeping for 6 hours or 7.5 hours, the bottom line is that it should be divisible by 1.5 hours. You can also try GABA before sleep, it's not working for me but it may help you have a deeper sleep in a shorter time.

Will a fit bit (or some other device) determine how much sleep I'm getting and wake me up at 6 or 7.5 hours?  Otherwise, I'm not sure how to gage that, as I don't know when I fall asleep!

There are so many different Fitbits out there but most of them gauge your actual sleep time. Like if I take a nap it wont gauge that but when I go to bed at night it will gauge that. Best thing is to look them up on line and search for what you want to do as there all pretty inexpensive. I have had mine for two years and it really helps.

Good to have you all @Neustache , @kaposzta , @Malkynn ! the key is to check in as much as you can. There should be many others joining from previous challenges as well so we can get into good conversation and push each other on!

Since my last post on Monday I had a 12 minute run to test my progress (2.03 kms, small improvement, but finally broke through the 2km limit).
Today I reached a new milestone, my first run over an hour, it was 9.55km in 1:07, so the pace was worse than on Moday, but I felt much better and I felt I could go on for a couple of minutes easily. I'll have a short, 25 minute run tomorrow, and then my next big target is 10km, maybe still this week.

Yesterday:
Lifted weights and did a 15 min cool down in the pool of kick-only laps.
I normally take the stairs back up to my apartment, but they are painting this week.

I have to ease up on some of my exercises because my spine is complaining a bit, the problem is, I have no idea which exercise is aggravating it.

Today I'll probably do physio, maybe go for a walk.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, the challenge is to always try and create systems and remove barriers to the behaviours I'm trying to form into habits.

It's been a process of trying to systemize gym gear + pool gear, without having to carry too much because with my shoulder injuries, it's not fun to do 18 flights of stairs carrying a bag.

So I now workout in a bathing suit and gym shorts and I've ordered microfiber towels for less bulk and weight, plus quicker drying.

If a pattern isn't seamlessly easy, I know myself, I just won't do it. I've learned that I have to hack my own behavioural patterns in order to get the outcomes I want.

@Malkynn for me its pretty much always trying to work around things that dont hurt. My hips and knees were hurting so much from working on a side gig the last couple days for me to get steps in and exercise because I was wabling so bad I basically took 3 small walks. If I dont do anything for a day or two then all well be back to fine but I cant sit around. Pool would be great but its just to boring. So i just do what I do.

8/9/19
woke 2:45 fell asleep in my chair probably around 8pm. Need to get back to my normal sleep schedule but always a challenge.
Weighed 206.8 I couldnt stop eating yesterday!
Fruit and veggies. I had two bannanas and carrots with Dinner so nowhere near enough
17,773 steps

Yesterday I was in alot of pain in both hips and knees and had alot of errands to run. Had to meet a guy for some legal documments so walked parking lot while waiting for him. Then my # 3 DS had soccer practice so walked during that in the later morning and them my youngest son had practice at night so walked during that. Dont ache as much this morning but again have alot of errands. Maybe I will go for a morning walk or head to gym and get on elliptical. See what the day brings

Fruits and veggies- 2 Bannanas 1 Peach and mixed veggies with dinner. For lunch I had just couple handful of mixed nuts, some craizans and a sports bar.

If your goal is to lose weight, ďaddingĒ fruit into what you are already eating is not a good plan. While healthy, fruit still has plenty of calories. Usually around 80-150 calories per piece of fruit, depending what it is.

While your lunch may sound small, the couple handful of nuts was probably 400ish calories, craizans around 150 calories, and sports bar another 300 calories or so. Thatís probably around 800 calories total, which is a pretty significant amount for anyone, especially with a goal of losing weight in mind.

That lunch alone was probably near 800 calories with no ďrealĒ protein source.

On the other hand, 8 oz chicken is around 275 calories and a cup of rice is about 210 calories.

Yep, as someone who lost A LOT of weight, it's really critical to conceptualize that just because food is "healthy" doesn't mean it's good for weight loss.

Mixed nuts and dried fruit/sports bars are "healthy", especially for hikers who need a compact source of a lot of extra calories, but a terrible snack for someone who is trying to lose weight.

That said, I never did well with counting calories, so my approach was to flood every meal with raw vegetables. Unlike fruit, it's extremely hard to overeat calories in raw veggie form.

Not great for the food budget, but fantastic for the waistline, DH and I were going through kilos of produce each week. Most meals were chopped peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, shredded carrot&red cabbage, avocado, sometimes a bit of a whole grain like sorghum, and a small portion of fish, chicken or pork.

Sometimes I would sprinkle nuts and seeds, sometimes artichokes or jalapenos, and always different spices and fresh herbs for flavour. No dressing.

You get very very full eating a giant pile of roughage, and a bowlful rarely adds up to more than 100 calories, depending on how much avocado you add.

It's only once I switched to vegetarian that I started paying more attention to portion control, but I was already down 50lbs at that point.

AFM, didn't do anything yesterday, not even physio, which is not ideal. May hit the gym today, may just do physio. I have a very busy day.

Well, I will throw my hat in here.  I started reducing carbs in April and have lost about 6#.  I'm not terribly concerned about my weight per se, but would like to drop another 9#, which would put me where I was a few years back.  Up until the past few weeks I've been more focused on diet than formal exercise (I ride, garden and walk, so not too sedentary anyway), but as I've adapted to lower carbs, my energy level has come up and I've been wanting to exercise more.  Actually headed out for my first run in a while this morning.  Main goal is to be fit enough to ride my big, leggy 3 year old horse through any shenanigans, and have the balance and core strength for more refined riding on the well-trained horse I'm riding for my friend.

Goals:
Eat low-carb, except for my homegrown root veggies in small portions.
Green vegetables daily.
Drink 75-100 oz of water per day
2 strength workouts per week
On office days, walk at lunch and use my standing desk and/or balance stool at least half the day
Work up to running 10 miles/week by November

I'm in...the continuation.

Goals

1. Finish half marathon training and the actual event (October 19).
2. Add more cross training: 6 swim, 8 bicycling, and 4-8 weight training sessions/month.
3. Continue cleaning up diet to include more vegetables and less sugar/junk.

Probably more than I can realistically handle currently but any progress is good!

I want to lose 5 vanity pounds and get visibly defined abs again. I honestly donít know what to do. I already workout almost everyday a mix of cardio and weights and I dont own a car so I walk a lot and now Iím doing MyFitbessPal again. The only thing that seems to work is eating 1k calories a day and going around hungry. I have started cutting carbs but I love love veggies.

Welcome to all the new comers!

I lost 60lbs when I first fire'd about 4.5 years ago not by changing so much what I ate or calorie counting or cutting back on carbs but simply Walking, eating less at meals and just healthier choices and not making it part of our entertainment so much. I have put about 15 back on over the last year simply by getting a bit lax but I will just go back to doing the things that worked in the past. At 6'3 even at the weight i am at I am on the thin side especially with my frame But psychologically being below 200 means something to me.

Love random health goals. :) New years gets too much attention! My "big picture" goal is to keep my body in physical, mental, and artistic shape so that I can do satisfying activities like martial arts and circus without feeling excessive guilt, anxiety, or pain.

Targetable goals:

I had this *complex* schedule planned out about how I was going to incorporate these activities into my day once school started up again. (I will have a 3/4 time schedule, meaning I more or less work half days every other day.) I was going to go to martial arts twice a week, fit in aerial conditioning and artistic exploration, physical therapy exercises and cardio, and on and on.

But then, two weeks ago, I randomly decided to start strength training. I think somebody linked to the AllPro beginner's strength program (https://allpro-sbr.fandom.com/wiki/AllPro_Simple_Beginners_Routine_Wiki) on another thread, and I've adapted that for the gym in my building and the limitations of my body, and it's been going great! SO has been tagging along, and our workout looks like this:

10 minutes warm up (him: running; me: physical therapy exercises and light rowing on the erg)
30 minutes adapted program
A few handstands for good measure

Doing this every other morning is simple and mindless, yet it tackles a lot of my goals. Recently I've gotten really into aerial straps, so once a week of play/aerial conditioning will balance.

Now I just have to cut back coffee again.

8/13/19
Sleep: 8 hours 19 min - woke up just shy of 8. Will need to push back bedtime 2 hours because next week I have to start getting up at 6 again.
Exercise: did a strength workout
Coffee: 1 cup, but *just* 1. Will be doing tea after this.
Play: Not sure if I'm up for martial arts today. If I go, it'll be to the big class in the evening instead of the small class now, so I can get lost in the crowd...

I was pretty ill coming out of the weekend, so my only exercise consisted of sometimes getting off the couch. I did go for one 5k walk, but it was a rather slow one.

Today I'm better, so did my usual: a bunch of physio, lifted weights, swam for 20 minutes, and climbed 18 flights of stairs.

Did our workout in the evening instead of morning because we slept in (8 hr 38min!) No coffee. Work starts tomorrow and next week will be chaos, so I need to be good about sleep. It's bed time now.

Be kind to yourselves. Joint pain is no fun. I think my joints are adjusting to the bench presses, my elbows aren't complaining like they did the first week. I think maybe the muscles caught on to the fact they have to DO something.

Yeah, I have some fairly serious injuries and an inflammatory disease, so I have to be extremely careful. I've learned the hard way not to push anything if it hurts.

I had to instruct SO when we started lifting not to cheer me on. "One more! You can do it!" seems supportive but my limits are my limits, I'm not blocked by energy or willpower. I wonder if that's true for other people and everyone thinks powering through pain is normal...

Yesterday (8/16)
No coffee
6hr 44min sleep
Did some handstand drills and stretching
Moved a bunch of tables and desks around a classroom.

Today (8/17)
7hr 52min sleep
Morning strength workout. Felt more difficult than usual - maybe because it's only been a day and a half, not two days, since last workout. Or the sleep thing. Fatigue is tricky.

Thinking of getting back into gelatin tea at night. It's supposed to help with sleep and joints. I just haaaate jello.

I'm sticking to my diet and getting my 2x a week strength exercises in.  Also doing pretty well at using my balance stool and standing desk at work and walking at lunch.  Just not finding the time/energy to run just yet since I spend about 3 hours at the barn riding and caring for horses most weeknights.  Haven't shifted any weight this week, but haven't gained either, so I will just keep on keeping on.

In the last 10 days I managed to run 5 times (40 mins, 75 mins, 12 mins, 45 mins, 41 mins). I should have tried to squeeze at least 1 more run in, but whatever, next week I'll try to run 5 times, as following: 40 mins, break, 60 mins, 40 mins, break, 40 mins. 88 runs to go.
Push-ups: I don't feel it, I made 2x20 yesterday, but I was too weak to do more. I guess 4 months without going to the gym has taken its toll on my strength...
Pull-ups: no progress

That's an awesome track record (eh?) of runs!

Pull ups are hard to jump straight into. Can you count a negative version? Jump up to the top of the pull up, then lower down to a count of five. They are actually really brutal, but doable even if you don't have a pull up yet.

Today, we hauled the rig out because some acquaintances in the building said they wanted to try silks. Ended up juggling and doing trapeze/straps for over an hour without anybody showing up. It's a little demoralizing, but nice to play at full height once in a while.

Got back from a few days in the woods with my father.
Gym/swim/stairs/physio yesterday, bloody feeling it this morning, yikes.

This is slowly starting to become a routine and not feel like a chore to work it into my day. I might start separating out swimming and gym though, as what I love about having them in the building is that it's easy to go, but when I do both, it's ever so mildly cumbersome bringing gear for both.

I think I might start swimming in the evening, which is when DH does.

It's 98% of the reason I decided I wanted to move here.

I'm a funny creature when it comes to motivation. I'm very very good at working very very hard, but what I put that energy towards is easily redirected if there's an annoying barrier in my way.
If there are too many irritations or little steps between me and exercise, I'll do something else instead.

Going to the public pool was a pain in the ass, especially in the winter with wet hair, going to the gym involved avoiding peak times, and even just going for a nice long walk is often treacherous in the winter and requires a ton of gear, and in the summer requires spackling on sunscreen.

I'm an impulse exerciser, if I can't easily be exercising within 5 minutes of the strike of the impulse, I'm not going to do it.
For me, it's all about removing barriers.

Sunday - did my workout anyway when I arrived and the gym and realized I hadn't changed from my flip-flops to gym shoes.
Monday/Tuesday - Walked at lunch, horse and garden activities after work.
Today: walked at work by myself.  I usually only walk with my husband, who works in an adjacent building, but he's home sick today, so going on my own took a little more motivation.  Gym workout tonight.

Weight is equal to the lowest I've hit a couple times over the past few weeks, but haven't gotten through that stopping point just yet.  I think it will happen soon.

Switched it up a bit and did physio and pilates today, might go for a swim, might do the stairs, we'll see.

Going to the gym and lifting weights always makes me feel strong, and then I try and do pilates and I feel like a piddly, inflexible weakling, lol.

Wins since Monday: (it is now Wedesnday)
Took a 1 hr nap today
Have gotten around 7000 steps every day this week
Strength trained on Monday and plan to tonight
Avoided coffee Monday/Tuesday

"Needs improvement":
Averaged 6.5 hours sleep per day (both due to early wakeup, and to playing games late at night)
Had coffee today
Sleep-triggered anxiety is making itself known and is making mountains out of every molehill

Maybe no more games after 8pm?

No swimming, no stairs. My body said "no" today and I need to listen to her. I'm all too capable of powering through things with an iron will, but finally, in my late 30s I've learned that that just leads to over exertion and injury.

I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Goals: Lose another 20 lbs by end of year. Start practicing a little for the 5k.

I lost 20 lbs in the first few months of the year but then these last couple months of summer I've been just barely maintaining my weight loss. I've been on travel since mid May so it's been really tough to stick to healthier home cooked meals. The goal is to get into a healthy weight range because my spouse and I plan to start trying to start a family in January. I also signed myself up for a 5k in January so I have a specific exercises end goal as well. I gave myself one year to get in gear from when we decided to have kids last December, gotta keep trying! My family tends towards the hefty side so I'm fighting a lot of genetics and cultural attachment to food (especially breads lol).

I think I shifted .5-1# this week, but with every day scale fluctuations, it's hard to say.  Sticking with the low-carb, whole foods plan, and feeling good.  Hit my two workouts this week and walked at lunch.  I did get a little lazy about the standing v. sitting likc a sack of potatoes at work, so I will try to improve that next week.  Did 4.5 miles this morning about 2/3 of the distance jogging and the rest walking.

Next week I'm challenging myself to get out and run or walk 2 mornings before work.  I always waste about 45 minutes each morning online before I go to work, so time is not an excuse.

Survived prep week!

Sleeping in this weekend was difficult. Encouraging myself to take naps helped weekend sleep get up to 8 hours and minimize the anxiety spiral, but all the sleep lost last week is just gone. Today I'm feeling like myself again. The self-care subscription box I get came in, and included sleep hygiene/ritual items like a quality sleep mask, ear plugs, and a rose water spray to put on your pillow. First time I've used it, but I think the sensory distraction of the rose water helped my brain slow down.

The workout yesterday was great - I finally figured out what was making my bench presses weird (seems obvious, but without the aid of gravity my shoulders only allow my upper arm to go in line with my body, no further. The weight was encouraging me to go beyond my shoulder's capacity.) And I really focused on glute activation throughout all exercises (especially arms) and it really made things feel more stable.

A win today would be working on mobility/flexibility. I've let my back tighten up. I keep ogling online flexibility courses, but I know what to do. I "just" need to do it.

Not too late to join?

I haven't had any place where I've posted for accountability when it comes to fitness goals before, so I reckon this could be a good place. I love being active, and frame my days along the lines of "today I'm going climbing, but with a bit of work (8h ) first. I usually visit the climbing gym with friends 2 times a week, and get out running on trails an additional 3-4 times a week.

Some goals:

Climbing: Get comfortable on 5.12a

Running: Sub 40-minute 10k

EDIT: Just saw the runners thread (sorry), so I'll head over there to be more on topic.

Thanks for the tips! :)
My problem with pull-ups is that I can't find a good place to start doing it (there are some street-workout places in my neighborhood but they lack this 'equipment'). I have no choice but to go to the gym :)

Since my last post (18/08/2019) I did the following:
- 4 runs (60 mins, 12 mins, 22 mins, 36 mins) -> I should have run much more, but I was on vacation and also the weather tricked me once
- very few push-ups and zero pull-ups -> my plan is to reach 1000 push-ups by the end of September as a warm-up, and I'm planning to go to the gym to do pull-ups

Workouts have been consistent. (No news is good news, in a way.) Well, I went for a run Monday night because I needed a distraction. I've also started doing "animal walk" mobility as my warmup, and that's been a really good addition. I feel like I get to do some mobility without having to designate time for it.

Sleep has been rough. Modal night at 6.5 hours. It's a 4 day weekend (hooray labor day), but I was UP at 6am this morning. Had to coax myself back to sleep, but I did manage to sleep in for another cycle this morning. Anxiety has been at a general, ever-present but ignorable state. This week would have been awful if I'd had to pull a 6-am-to-9-pm on back to school night like my full-time coworkers, so I'm very grateful for asking and being granted that transition last year.

Coffee, doing OK. I had it twice as a teaching day treat after school. Trying not to make that a habit.

Got my strength workouts in this week, but didn't walk before work.  So sleeeepy... zzz.  Walked at lunch 3/5 days.  One day I had appointments in the morning, then teleworked, and the other I ran an errand at lunch instead.  Did pretty well on using my standing desk and made good food choices.  I'm getting back to the point where I enjoy my workouts, and I know I'm working harder, because I made myself sore from my smaller, 30 minute Wednesday night workout this week.  No new lower weight achieved this week, but the up swings seem to be staying at a lower number, so I think I'm headed the right way, or at least exchanging some fat for muscle.  Running again tomorrow morning.

Okay, I need to get back on a healthier wagon. We have had a TON of change lately, between sending my oldest off to college and making a dramatic move ourselves...I've detailed it elsewhere here but we downsized from 3,690 square feet to 1,642 square feet...a very short move of one mile but getting rid of a whole house worth of stuff, all while prepping to send my oldest across the country for college. Needless to say, my self-care has taken a nosedive in the middle of everything else! My regular running and yoga have pretty much been nonexistent, food has been a nightmare, and I've gone from having a drink a few times a week to 1-2 every day. I got on the scale today and I'm up 10 pounds from the last time I got on said scale...and 40-50 from where I really want to be. My ankle I hurt last year has been aching and I've been having pain that I think is Plantar Fasciitis. I'm sure the extra weight is not helping. I will be in a wedding next summer and have a vacation planned for next April on a beach...It's time for me to say enough and take care of myself again!

2019 year end fitness/health goals:
minimum 10,000 steps per day, every day
minimum yoga 2x per week
minimum running 5 miles per week...starting once it isn't quite so hot...let's say beginning Oct 1.
goal weight for end of 2019 is to lose 20 pounds...starting weight today is 180, ugh. No "diet" just portion control, moderation with treats which have been too prevalent lately
cut alcohol to no more than 1 drink per day initially for rest of September, will evaluate and reduce further in October

I'm rooting for all of you!

Got a question - how do you know how many steps you do in a day?  Do you have a fitbit?  What is the mustachian consensus on them?

I have a serious heart condition so I've thought about getting a fitbit for heart monitoring but I could just see myself getting a little too obsessed by number of steps and hours of sleep.

Any smart phone will track your steps.
That said, 10,000 really is an arbitrary number based on one study put out by the makers of pedometers. No joke.

Walking is great, but there's no reason to walk at least 10,000 steps. I usually aim for ~7000 because that's a nice 5km and my hips and knees don't hurt.

As for heart health, what kind of metric are you looking to manage? What has your cardiologist recommended?
Title: Re: TO END OF 2019 FITNESS/HEALTH GOALS

@Hula Hoop I don't have one, but there are cheap knock-offs on Amazon with good reviews for about $30.

I'm somewhat waiting for the smart watch/GPS/fitness tracker tech to merge and gel a little more.  But also, I figure it would be confounded by horseback riding, and I would have to remove it to prevent damage when kettlebell training, which is my main form of strength training.

The heat here in Idaho broke over the last 36 hours, so outdoor exercise should be much nicer going forward.  I see people out running when it's 95, and I don't know how they do it.  Well, I do, but I just hate hate hate running when it's over 80 or so.  Got out and did my 4.5 mile loop this morning.  About 2/3 jogging and 1/3 walking.  With the cooler weather this week, I will get a mid-week 3 miler in.  Weight isn't shifting, but I can see the musculature developing in my shoulders especially, and my riding breeches feel a bit looser around the waist/hips so at least some recomposition is happening.  It took until today to drop the weight from last weekend's sins, so I'm motivated to stay on track this weekend and set myself up for clean eating when I go back to work next week.

My cardiologist hasn't recommended any kind of fitness tracker.  Without getting too personal, I have a serious heart issue which might recur so I kind of like the idea of tracking my heart rate.  I guess it's comforting.  I also need to keep my heart rate below a certain level while exercising.

I have a Garmin tracker with a heartrate monitor built in, but TBH I mostly use it for sleep. (It has a measurement for deep/REM sleep, but I don't know how accurate it is.) I like the Garmin interface, it was cheap enough (refurbished model). Occasionally the stress monitor will tell me to breath, and usually it's right and I should take a moment to settle. They all have their limitations, and I have to take everything off for aerial. My SO has a more advanced one and it can tell what activity he's doing in the gym, and counts his reps for him, with about 95% accuracy, so that's cool.

Had a solid workout today. We've been working out every-other-day consistently for 5.5 weeks now, which is crazy! I've also done an hour of stretching twice in the past week, where did that come from??? Generally feel good, though my shoulders were tight enough last night to interrupt sleep. I've been doing mobility/PT during warm up, so I'm not sure what to do about it now.

Sleep is OK. My consistently inconsistent schedule means I get 6 hours one night, 8 the next. Better than 6 every night, but probably not the healthiest.

Aaaand I finally lost a pound, which puts me at my lowest weight in about 3 years, and past the 50% mark on the way to my goal weight.  7# to go!

It's funny, I've been eating pretty low-carb, and added back in a few carbs in the form of cantaloupe and some root vegetables because I'm going to eat what I've grown, and boom, finally a small weight loss.  This has been my sticking point when I've lost a couple pounds at various points in the last few years, so I'm psyched to be pushing past it.

down two pounds, 178. 38 to go.
no running yet
no yoga yet
drinking has been better; no more than 1 drink a day and not even every day since I first posted here
mostly making my 10,000+ steps per day goal, 74,020 total for last week

I find for me, 10,000 is pretty easily attainable if I just make a modicum of effort. When I am running it's over 20,000 most days. My employer does a "wellness" competition thing regularly and 10,000 is usually the daily target so I try to make it my minimum. As for tracker, I have an AppleWatch...it's an older model (the first waterproof one) without cellular. I like it for running and swimming better than the fitbit I used to use. A Garmin seemed like overkill for my level of activity plus I didn't really like the ones I tried.

Planned cheat day on Sunday since we went to our favorite restaurant.  Now I'm up 3#, but it should be off by the weekend.  Walked the dog last night to make up for not walking at lunch. I'm very consistently getting my 2x strength workouts and 1 run per week, but can't seem to get a 2nd and 3rd run scheduled in on weekdays.  Other than Sunday, eating is good, though maybe too much of a good thing yesterday!

@soccerluvof4  maybe you can squeeze in some yoga or stretching?  That always helps me when I'm body sore - seems to get the lactic acid moving out of the muscles without too much impact?

Missed our first workout day in 7 weeks yesterday. Trying to focus on the pros (heck of a streak!) and not the cons (broke the streak). Starting to get harder to move butt to the gym now that it's not as novel.

I've also realized that I either have to go cold turkey on coffee or accept a more lax rule. I've been having one cup (maybe 2) on long days, and it just makes them longer.

Average sleep for the past week has been only 6.75 hours, instead of 7.75 the prior two weeks. I'm doing something wrong. I don't know what.

Didnt weigh in and still felt like crap /exhausted yesterday.

@Ynari my fit bit says I average about 6.5 hours of sleep which is up of late for me from 5.50 but if it wasn't for naps I'd be even more wiped out. I tried cutting back on coffee but I drink it at 4-430am usually so two cups don't really make a difference. I am caffeine sensitive for sure so I make sure though I don't get anymore after that but its as you know in some foods etc..

Got my run in today; loving the cool fall air!  New low weight by just a fraction.  This afternoon I put on a pair of pants I've been avoiding all summer because they were uncomfortably tight back in May or so.  Now I need a belt to keep them from sliding down!  Will be thrilled if I can lose 6# more by the end of the year and then just maintain.

@soccerluvof4 I am thinking it is coffee related. It was really easy to convince myself once or twice a week to get a latte between work-school (7am-3pm) and grad-school (4pm-7pm) because they're long as hell days, and I justified it because "It's not even 4pm YET". But I think even that is too late in the day given how early I have to wake up. I'll try a 2pm cutoff, which effectively means no more daytime coffee because class field trips to the Keurig are not advisable...

Anyway, workout updates:
9/19 - went to work out again but was exhausted. My back was upset either due to sleeping funny or not having good form. Took a 3 hour nap later that day.
9/22 - took an extra day between workouts, and did it in the evening. Today felt a lot better.

SO got me a weighted blanket for my birthday. It'll be interesting to see if that helps with the sleep. So far I've fallen asleep to the same episode of Great British Bakeoff twice with it, so that's promising.

I want to set the weighted pistol squat world record, which might sound difficult at first until you realize I'm probably like one of twenty people who actually cares. This guy set it at 155lb:

I got 95lb the other day, and it was the first time I tried it. I've been a serious powerlifter for ten years, so I think I can do it.

Back home finally and ran for the first time in years last Saturday. I walked a lot this summer to prep for the 5k, and now it's time to actually get running. I'm sore and tired but I'm proud of myself for getting out there and doing it. I'm going for another run this afternoon.

Good luck with your goals everybody!

Good luck, E.T.! Walking improves cardiovascular fitness more than most people know, and it's way better for your joints anyway.

Kinda related, kinda not: Started incorporating chickpeas into my diet since they're the cheapest protein I can find, and I'm ASTOUNDED at how full I feel and how nutrient-dense these little legumes (beans? idk) are. Gonna make a hummus out of them soon.

Hi all,

Iíd love to join this challenge.  I had so much work travel over the summer that I feel a bit out of sorts.  Here are my goals over the next couple months:

Walk at least 5,000 steps/day
Yoga 2-3 times/week
No drinking on weekdays (unless out at an event)
Average 7.5 hours of sleep

That seems like a good start.  Weíll see how I do!

Well, I am in the runner's thread, but my running has taken a back seat due to hip pain.  At the same time, my favorite kettle bell gym closed down.  So I'm sort of re-grouping.

Goals: keep regrouping.  Come up with a new plan.

1.  I've been swimming instead of running.  Back in the pool!  My goal is to swim at least 2x a week.
2.  Use the YMCA!  Before the KB gym shut down, I had 3 gym memberships.  We didn't go to the Y often (family membership) so the cost per use was $$.  I'd like to get the total # of individual visits to 21 each month ($5 each).  (If we go for a family swim, that's 2,3, or 4 "visits" depending on how many of us go).
3.  Keep lifting.
4.  Get back to running, but cut back to 2x a week.
5.  Weight.  Sigh. I've gained about 8 lbs in the last year.  I'm fairly certain some of it is muscle because of the lifting.  So, I don't really want to worry too much about it.  I wouldn't mind losing about 5 lbs.  It's hard tho, when it's "easy" to maintain, like now, my BMI is 25-26.  Eh well.

So, I've been doing well the last few weeks. Sept had 19 individual visits to the YMCA.
1. Two weeks ago: swim, swim, yoga at home, BodyPump at the Y, walk, walk
2. Last week: walk, swim, BodyPump, swim, walk, BodyPump, swim, walk
3. This week: walk, BodyPump, swim, walk (and the rest of the week: swim,  BodyPump, walk)

When the hip is better, I'll do 2x a week running (basically, dropping Tues swim).

LOL, this week has been a bust.  I really underestimated this cold, and it's been all I can do to get to work (did take a sick day) and take care of my horses this week.  This is the first morning I'm feeling somewhat OK.  In the meantime, my dad showed up for a visit, so I'm hosting him, which always means eating ice cream. At least he is a low-maintenance guest. If I'm still feeling decent this afternoon I'll go for a short gym workout.  I did venture to weigh myself on Friday morning and just had two extra pounds that I think are mostly bloat from being sick.

Not gonna lie, it's going to be really hard to add 60lbs to this. I know I have 130lb in me by December, though, for sure.

Minimum goal by 2020: 130lbs

Stretch goal by 2020: World Record at 160lbs

Wish me luck!

Edit: This is also something I don't want to push TOO hard, seeing as I'm on one leg and all. It doesn't make up the bulk of my programming. It got a compliment from one of my friends though, and he's a world class decathlete! :)

Double edit: Also, I'm ACTUALLY growing out the stache for MAX STRENGTH GAINS lmao:

I started running again last week. I'm definitely starting over...I did one mile last Friday and 1.1 today. I haven't made it to any yoga classes yet but I have been doing some yoga at home. Weight is still crap. I really need to get back to meal planning. I'm hoping to take a stab at that this weekend. We're working on adding more veggies right now. Checking in, though, to keep some accountability going on.

For the week:
Thurs: swim (1200 yd, I was tired and kept sucking down pool water, so bailed early)
Fri: BodyPump at the Y
Sat: Nothing.  First Sat day off in forever and ever (had to be at the beach at 6:15 am for a school function)
Sun: 4.5 mile walk, then took a kid to the pool for swimming fun
Mon: BodyPump at the Y
Tues: TRACK TUESDAY.  First run in 3.5 weeks, just getting started slowly with easy 200m repeats for 30 min
Weds: Hip / Core workout for running, and walked 2 miles

So, here's the thing. I have this friend-not-friend.  You know, an Instagram friend (saw her posts, started following her).  She's local, and a runner, and a "not fast" runner to boot, so I obv love her.  So I started following her on Strava too.  And here we are, I've never spoken to her one on one but we've yelled/waved hi at races AND it turns out, her older kid just switched to my younger kid's school - same grade, different classroom.

Anyway, she has a goal to hit 1000 miles of running this year, and it means that because of a surgery she had earlier, she has to do 30 miles a WEEK till the end of the year.  And I said, on the IG post "damn, I've never done more than 28".  She asked if that was my pep talk.  Ha!

I decided that I should try to do the same - with the caveat that I am NOT trying to run 30 mi a week (see: hip injury), but simply to get 30 miles a week on my Garmin with all movement.  However, that's still a lot (about 10k steps a day, and I sit on my butt a lot at work, and I don't wear the watch at the pool).

So, it's week 1!  I've hit about 9700 steps a day so far.

Someone above mentioned meal planning as a health goal.  The Kitchn Website has a great Facebook Meal Planning Club where Iíve gotten some great inspiration and ideas!  Iíve definitely found that when I do my planning and shopping for the week on Sundays, my entire week is so much less stressful and Iím much less likely to go out for expensive/less healthy food.

Getting back on track! I have been back out running 3 times in the past week (met my goal), went to yoga once last week (goal was 2x but that's better than zero). Trying to make better food choices and walking more in general. Down three pounds since last week! I'm sure it won't always be 3 pounds per week but at least it is finally moving in the right direction. My goal is to get down to 169 by  the end of the year so that I am "only" overweight and not "obese"...not that I put a lot of stock into BMI in general since my fit, athletic son is "obese" because of his muscle mass, but I am shooting for the very high end of "normal" as my healthy target anyway, which is 140.

weight 205.0

Stepped up another 15 minutes on the Elliptical so did 90 minutes. Ate better and am going to try to keep improving that part of it. No more weekend traveling as I mentioned at least for awhile should help

Still very sick.

I've spent a little time in the pool, but mostly literally noodling around with a pool noodle. No gym, no stairs, nothing strenuous.
This sucks.  I hope you get better soon.

Week 1 of "try and complete 30 miles a week" was 35.6 miles.  (I wear my garmin all the time...so it's all steps)

It really does suck.

I forgot to mention that I've been doing some great 5-7km walks though. With the colours this time of year, I would walk forever if my body let me.

So at least I'm doing that, which is so nice.

Miraculously haven't gained any weight the past few weeks.  Feeling almost recovered from the cold from Hell and eating is back on track.  I'm off work and doing some heavy yard work, so regularly scheduled exercise will have to wait until next week.

Gosh I miss the colors of autumn.  And the cooler weather.  Grew up in the northeast, but live in So Cal now...so we get a very mild version of fall and Oct usually is hot.  I also love walking and the combo I could also do forever.

Wow, I actually hit a new low weight of 170.8.  So close to the 160's, where I should be.  Trying to remember where I stashed my skinny jeans to see if they fit.

I love reading this thread...keeps me motivated to keep moving. Although I haven't been posting, I got in most of my runs. Half marathon completed today. It was brutal...could definitely have done with more training.

New goal: keep running while the weather cools so I can have some time to get into better shape while not melting. Bonus if I actually manage to add swimming ~2X a week. There is a local rec center that isn't too expensive so hubby and I are planning on signing up the end of this month.

I have 11 doctors, it's not a bug, it's a systemic illness I've had my whole life.

I should start feeling a bit better soon though, I've been over worked for the past two months and that's what tends to cause major problems.

8 gym sessions per month
Target weight loss 2lbs per week

Starting weight: 226.6lbs
Day 1 steps: 6500
Gym: 0/8
Cals: 1900

Ugh I have been sucking at this. We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel (downsized substantially a few months ago, with the plan of renovating the kitchen). We are doing a lot of the work ourselves, which is great for saving money, but not great for diet and exercise. Trying to get through the next couple weeks at which point we will have a functional kitchen again. I've been getting my 10,000 steps most days, but my weight is at 179 still...not making much progress. I haven't gotten back to running because of the remodel and tweaking my back (again).

Oh my goodness this is exactly where I'm at. I'm finally doing some delayed repairs on my kitchen and it's taken me longer than I thought it would. It is seriously tough to keep up with my running and eating healthy when I've ripped out my kitchen and I'm doing reno work each night after my day job. Good luck with your home project @FireHiker! We'll get these kitchens done eventually!

I'm into my second week of getting back on track.  I did about 45 minutes at the gym last night, and just slightly sore today.  Next Sunday I'll go back to the full hour workout, plus my half hour on Wednesday night and a 4-mile run/walk on Saturday mornings. Need to add a 2-3 mile mid-week run as well. Weight seems to be holding steady so no complaints.

My horse is in the midst of physical rehab involving 20 minutes per day of trotting under saddle, which I suppose burns more calories than sitting (for me and the horse).

I just bought myself an early Christmas gift - the Samsung Active smartwatch.  So I'll be joining the world of step counting this weekend.

I got a smartwatch yesterday!  (Samsung Active $149.99 at BestBuy for anyone who's interested).

Pleased with how it tracked my run today.  I managed to jog almost all of the first 3.24 miles at a little over 10min/mile pace.  OTOH, I was annoyed to learn that the route I thought was 4.4 miles is actually slightly less.  It says I did 15,424 steps today, but about 4,000 of that was riding my horse this morning, so that's cheating.

Made it through Thanksgiving without too much ridiculousness.  Now to deal with a week of travel.  At least I'm at a hotel I've stayed at several times before, so I know they have a fairly good gym, and even good areas to run if there's enough daylight left after work.

Only doing weights about once a week right now, with my illness I have to be careful with them.

I'm so bored with physio. So so bored, and yet I have to do the same boring ass exercises for the rest of my life.

Just got home from a M-F work trip.  I worked out twice at the hotel gym, and mostly ate reasonable (a salad every day).

15,507 steps today, though about 4,000 were my horse's since I went out and worked her immediately when I got home.

Hoping to run this weekend, but it's supposed to be cold and rainy.  DH's birthday food-fest is tomorrow; I'll try to sample everything without getting too gluttonous.
