No Restaurant November
« on: November 05, 2013, 11:17:29 AM »
I'm cracking down on my habit of not cooking dinner. So all meals will be eaten either at home or at work. So far so good! Who's with me?

I actually already sort of failed because I got a donut at Krispy Kreme, kimbap at Kimbap Cheonguk, and ate a full meal of bulgogi with rice and kimbap at Kimbap Cheonguk--all this past weekend.

However, if we're counting November starting NOW, I'm in. With two exceptions: 1) my book club meeting in three weeks will be held at a small cafe, where I'll get a coffee and empanada combo for 7000w, and 2) I'm going out of town for a conference November 30, so I'll get lunch while there (or I could try packing a lunch and snacks--this is worth looking into...). If I end up making a full-weekend trip out of it and staying with a friend, there will likely be at least two meals out, though!  :S

I'm usually pretty good about not going out to eat, but I make weird little departures sometimes (like getting a Krispy Kreme donut and kimbap because my language exchange meeting was delayed an hour and I missed normal lunch time). My weakness isn't restaurants, but occasional snacks.

Because the past three months had higher expenses due to my boyfriend visiting, I really want to work hard to get my numbers low for this month. Hurrah--let's do this!

Ironic, I just failed at this by getting ramen noodle soup out.

I'm going to modify this a little and say I won't buy food with my own money this month. I know of several free food opportunities coming up in the next few weeks.

Today while I was running some errands, I really wanted to stop and get some bungeoppang from a street vendor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bungeoppang). But I didn't because of this challenge.

I am in.  I already have planned meals and shopped for the whole month, so there is no room for eating out.  I am going to two potlucks which are sort of like eating out without the cost.

Uh oh... I think I'm going to have to pick up something to eat for breakfast tomorrow!

If I'm able to squeeze into the hospital for a health check-up at 9:30am (assuming the appointment slot wasn't given away--phone died so I couldn't snag it for sure, but maybe the nurse I emailed did it anyhow), I won't be able to eat breakfast before leaving the house. Because my first class is at 10:45am, there's no way I can go to the hospital, have my health check-up, go home, make and eat breakfast, AND make it to work in time. Aggghhh!

Life.

I could just bring some yogurt and tangerines in my purse, but I'm used to eating eggs for breakfast and probably won't fare well without something substantial.

Or you could boil some eggs when you get home tonight and carry that in your purse?  (have straight from the shell, or make egg salad?)

Not to be a petulant child or anything, but *vomit*. I don't do hard boiled eggs or egg salad :-p

But I didn't end up buying breakfast. I brought yogurt and tangerines and didn't even have time to get anything else between the hospital and work. I'm thankful for a satisfying lunch, because I was super hungry by that point!

Saturday I had a victory because I was gone from 9:45am to 6pm and managed to not buy any food out (I packed snacks and had some snacks at a meeting I attended).

...but then yesterday, Sunday, I failed by buying a pizza at E-Mart. Imagine picking up a pizza at Costco: that's basically what I did. While this pizza will make four meals by its completion, I think I still cheated by getting it. Cost: 11,500w, or $10.84USD.

No-restaurant November was a smashing success! I went out a few times but this speaks for itself!

Before adding in my big purchase - new Moto X from Republic (which has been great on my $10/mo plan so far) + $200 Verizon ETF - my spending/income for November was 52%!

Awesome! I was wondering if you were ever going to participate in this thread again :-p

I didn't go out to eat after joining in, but I did bring home the aforementioned pizza. Twice. Oops.

I had my exception empanadas, which were lovely, and packed a lunch for my out-of-town conference. I probably wouldn't have packed my lunch without this challenge.

Hah, sorry :)

I'm doing No-more-restaurant December (I went out for a spontaneous $40 dinner on December 1 - ugh!). I'll try to keep this more updated.

That's awesome that you packed a lunch for your conference! My roommates and I are going snowboarding this weekend and I'm going to pack some lunches/snacks to keep us nice and stuffed to resist the call of the lodge (although I might falter and get a $1 hot chocolate.)
