Stop getting sick
« on: November 27, 2012, 03:24:15 PM »
I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, so after two bad colds this season, I am throwing down the gauntlet:

I will not get sick for the rest of the winter.

Sure, there's an element of randomness, but I will do whatever it takes to get the likelihood down.  Plenty of sleep, regular exercise, not getting stressed, half cup of orange juice a day (let's not go crazy here, orange juice is expensive), better hand hygiene, whatever it takes.

Anybody with me?

neti pot

Just make sure you boil the water first, or only use distilled

Also, I have been under the weather more than usual this cold season (normally just one cold, if that, when the weather changes), so I'm with you.  Here's to good health.

"Smoke some cigarettes... it kills the bacteria in your stomach."

Or another good one, just drink a lot of alcohol (it kills bacteria, as anyone who's seen an old western knows).

Let's do it! This year has been a weird sick year for me. There have been the usual colds but I've also had nasty bronchitis TWICE- the second time was in the middle of our very hot summer. I'm trying to avoid a third run of that damned sickness.

I've had a tendency to bronchitis so I feel you on that one.  I used to get sick almost every winter with bronchitis.  One thing my allergist recommended is a good quality dust mite cover for mattress and pillow.  Could be coincidence, but I haven't had a case of bronchitis since.

Flu shot?

They are free in Ontario (maybe where you live?). They aren't perfect, but they certainly don't hurt. Personal health is too complicated for me to be able to say whether or not I've been healthier in years I got the shot, but like I said, it can't hurt.

The key to not getting sick is a good immune system.  George Carlin has a good riff on the topic.

1. Stop washing your hands so much, you need to eat dirt + bacteria to build your immune system
2. Excercise the 5 second rule
3. Go play outside and get dirty on a regular basis.

Your immune system is like a football team.  If you give it byes all the way to the superbowl, its going to lose.  I needs to play those first 18 games to have a chance.

Warning: Use this advice at your own risk. This was prepared using my MD degree that I dont have.

I haven't had so much as a cold in well over a year now. I'm joining you because heck, I want it to stay that way!
And... I do wash my hands. ;) Especially when around office and communal settings like libraries and family gatherings where I know the % of sick people (and kids with jammy hands) is damned high. I agree that antibacterials etc. are damaging to our immune systems, but washing your hands is pretty much the gold standard for keeping germies out of ya. Don't be a clean freak, but don't also go rubbing your face in someone else's hankie is my motto.  (Sorry George Carlin)
Here's to us all keeping snot-free!

I hadn't heard that one but I like his advice about cancer: You gotta get a whole bunch of cancers, so that they fight each other and leave you alone.

Seems legit.

I would say move to the Tropics as I haven't been sick nearly as much since I moved down here.  However, my co-worker is out yet again with food poisoning.  He said it was his own cooking...  I eat at the casinos down here, as well as eat most of my food at the on-post dining facility and so far (2 years 2 months) haven't gotten sick.  I do drink 2 glasses of OJ or pineapple juice each morning but that is because I like juice and it is included with breakfast at the dfac.  Also, hand sanitizer is my friend and I filter all my water off post (I live off post).  The times I have been sick it is either during or right after a trip home to the States (airplane...) or my coworkers come to work sick and cough and sneeze all over me (see hand sanitizer comment).  Also, I work a computer help desk so I'm handling keyboards and id cards of the soldiers who carry all kinds of germs.
