Staying off the forum this month
« on: July 05, 2016, 05:23:21 PM »
An odd challenge. But one that works for me right now. I have a lot of work stuff going on that I need to get done. And the forum is a great way for me to distract myself from doing it. So I'm staying off the forum almost the entire month. I've been off for a week. I might check in about once per week for the rest of July. If I get my projects done I might be back more frequently or earlier.

I think the list of work tasks that keep going unfinished, and keep weighing on me, is one reason why I'm unhappy with work. Being less distracted and getting them done may help me feel better about things. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully, you won't see this.

Joining you - will post my monthly update to journal tomorrow, then that's it until August 1.  Unless I slip up.

I spent most of June off the forum. I do this periodically. At some point I just seem to become aware that I'm just spending too much time here.

I think I'll continue to document my FIRE in my Journal for July, then go dark again in August. :)

I went out and bought a motorcycle, then felt too guilty to get on this forum for a couple months lol.

I was trying to think of a way to limit my time on here.  Find a good album on youtube and "forum" until the music runs out.
Your idea of blocks of days might work better.

I stayed off until today. The real test is the workdays. Let's see how I do this week.

Slipped today too.  At the office today, so don't have the "not at work excuse".  Oh well.  Signing off again.

Was this your "I've hit the post button 7000 times I need to stop and go somewhere else right now before my finger tip rubs away leaving nothing but bone" moment?

I'm with John Snow... it scares me overtime I click the profile button which shows how much time I've spent online here. But I can't seem to stop. If the forum is here in place of me having a daily crack habit or other such vice then so be it :D

I'm getting better at staying off. I try to look very quickly through the first page of unread posts, then go to new replies to my posts, and then that's it. It's such a time suck, but honestly, advice on here has changed my life for the better, and I need to be on here just long enough to pick up the gems...and try to help others if I genuinely can. (Not just bloviate.)

No. Just that I spend too much time here when I should be working. I would feel better getting the work done instead of letting it hang over me. But I have to write a report and I have serious writers block right now. So I'm procrastinating here. Which won't help me feel any better in the long run. Probably worse. But in the short run I feel better. It's an odd thing for me because I used to be so proactive about getting things done immediately. But I'm pretty over working now. And ready to FIRE (except the bank account). And that blank page with the blinking cursor just kills me.

Have you read "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott?  She has good techniques for dealing with writer's block.

I'll look into that book.

I ended up working on it until 10pm. I was able to get it to the point I could send it on to the next stage. I feel better about it now that it's off my plate.

My goal is to be all caught up with everything by next Friday. If so, I'll rid myself of many back monkeys.

Not that you should be seeing this... :P but when I've really got to write something and just keep getting distracted by anything available, I boot up CreaWriter. I have it with no sound, no pictures, just a full white screen with black text. I donated $10 to get the full version (has a few fancy twiddles, not really essential if you are just inputting plain text, mainly because I like it and want to support it). Somehow not being able to see the taskbar or clock really helps my mind not get started on that endless round of distractions because it has nothing to pick up on.

I think this is 5 days in a row now. I just don't care about my work projects. So I do other things.

I did pretty well this week. Crossing some things off the to do list. Got 150 old emails out of my inbox yesterday. My back might be monkey free next week.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
