This train just keeps on moving. DH and I are both on family leave for the next 3 months for the birth of our second kid (born mid April). He gets paid full salary for 4 weeks and a % of his salary for the remaining 8 weeks, I get paid short term disability ($2500 total) for 6 weeks. We're feeling extra fortunate to be able to take this time and settle into life as a family of 4 without much of an impact to our financial goals.

Congratulations!!!! That time off is HUGE! It is so encouraging to see companies doing things right and giving the family time off to adjust to a new baby.

I love that this race is growing! I'm glad to be here early and enjoy the "smallness" of the whole thing. I'm looking forward to seeing you updates for the month! The more folks who join, the more exciting the race for us all  :D

Alright, onto my numbers:

It's been a good month for me. Some solid bonuses, a short vacation, and I got my second COVID vaccine on April 30th, so I'm officially in the "time to start getting back into the world" phase of my life.

Beyond the immediate stuff, I've been thinking a lot about what Lean FIRE would means to me. For me, Lean FIRE is a 5% withdraw rate. Assuming no major recession or tragedy, I can probably hit it in the next 2, maybe 3 years thanks to some big bets I've made on my current job.

5% withdraw is shaky if you stop earning an income, but I don't plan to stop earning an income at FIRE - at least not for awhile. I have a number of creative ideas I would like to pursue, many would earn me an income. I have a specific idea where I could use some of my stash to hire a friend of mine for a year or two and we could build something together that we've been dreaming about for awhile. Assuming it works, I could have earned my investment back in 1-2 years and be earning more than enough to get myself below a 4% withdraw rate.

It's weird to think about. I make a very high income in my current job and we're going to exit in the next 30 months. That exit means a big payout for me and potentially a life changing payout if the stars align (though I'm not banking on that). Even if my idea fails, I can easily pivot to another high paying, 9-to-5 job; my skills won't meaningfully deteriorate in 3 years. Seems like an extremely low risk opportunity.

All of this is dreaming, of course. Maybe we have a massive recession. Maybe I get laid off. Maybe my company doesn't exit and my shares aren't worth the 1's and 0's that make them up. Maybe I die before then. But it is still fun to dream about what that life would look like and how a higher withdraw rate can be worth the risk.

Ha, thank you! really, the difference is I started focusing on savings/retirement after buying my first house and (at the same time) I tripled my income. I feel like this is cheat mode to an increase that big in such a short time.

June's not quite here yet, but my numbers won't change much over the next few days, so no harm in updating now.

Tough month. If it weren't for my contributions, I would have been negative.

I'm going on a real vacation for the first time in almost two years, so I'm looking forward to that. Being fully vaccinated also means my job wants me to start traveling again in June, so once I'm back from my time off, I'll be moving back into the pre-COVID travel schedule...which can be intense. My boss has confirmed I don't need to be in the office when I'm in town, so at least I'll get to keep up the flexibility of WFH I got to enjoy over the last year.

Here's to a summer that helps us all heal.

Update:
Just chugging along. Things have slowed down A LOT at work. I expected it to slow, but hoped we'd be further along when it did. Rattles me a bit as my bonuses have dropped significantly. Still, the market has been kind to my investments. I'm at that place where the monthly growth is above what I'm putting in - and I feel like I'm putting in an insanely high amount. It's weird to see that (good weird).

I wish I had friends around me I could talk through some of this stuff with. All my friends are either deeply in debt or have a very, very high income and no real savings/investing. I've encourage a few younger folks to follow the FIRE/Mustachian path (which is great!) but there's several years behind me in the journey. My DW supports me completely and totally and yet doesn't understand what we're doing. I give her some high level updates a few times a year and she celebrates with me, but I can tell she doesn't care as long as I'm happy and the bills are paid.

Anyway, neither here nor there. I think I'm just in a weird place going into July. Here's to a good month for us all!

Awesome! When do you plan to pull the trigger? At aspirational FI, or sometime before?

@alcon835 our bonus just hit and was significantly lower this year too. I talk this stuff to death with my spouse, but don't have too many IRL friends to talk to about it either. A few have interest, but aren't as far along the path, so it isn't quite the same.

Another increase in a month without a paycheck, hooray! Boss called and asked if I wanted to extend my maternity leave until September, and YESSIR I do, so that will be a few more unpaid months. I'm so grateful to have the time off with the kids and the ability to say yes to unpaid time off.

In other exciting news, my Coast age (as per the equation below - credit to Arebelspy), just dropped below 46 years old. Woo!

Coast age=LN((1+7%)^Current age*FIRE#/Current stash)/LN((1+7%))

Yeah, most of the time it doesn't matter, but when I'd like to commiserate/celebrate with someone it would be nice.

That is the best possible maternity leave phone call a person can get from their boss! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

It is getting close enough to dream. I am currently in a stressful job and pretty burnt out. Hoping to squeeze out another 10 months in my current job and then dropping down the days I work if they will let me - April 2022 I will be fully vested and my bonus will pay out.

I am hoping to get the % to 80% by April 2022 . We are in a unique position that we have a pension (military) coming in each month already so will never be in a position we would not have an income.

I'd like to join this race! I went back as far as I had records of:

201920202021
January11%23%36%
February12%24%37%
March12%21%39%
April14%24%41%
May15%26%42%
June15%26%43%
July15%28%44%
August16%30%-
September     16%29%-
October17%30%-
November18%33%-
December22%35%-

Estimating we hit 100% in November of 2025. 4 years to go! Although these numbers are with a 4% withdrawal rate and we are shooting for 3.25% to 3.5% to be a bit more conservative

July wasn't a great month for growth, but everything else moved forward as normal. Still chugging along towards FIRE at about the clip I expected. I'm hoping to hit 30% FIRE by October, which will put me at my 2021 goal three months early. If I can get there sooner, all the better!

Otherwise, July was pretty uneventful. I've started traveling again for work which is weird. Jumping from State to State I get to see how everyone is handling and thinking about COVID and everywhere is pretty dramatically different. I don't have any great insights into any of it, but it's certainly something I've been paying attention too.

Whew what a ride! I'm loving watching everyone's progress!

We sold our newer car this month and became a one car family. They paid us more for it than we bought it for two years ago, so that was a massive win and we added it right to the stash. I got a small bonus from work which was nice, and DH went back to work (which was less nice). Otherwise we're just chugging along. My projections say 6-7 more years, but the progress seems faster than that. We shall see!

12/2015    4.88%
12/2016    8.63%
12/2017   13.23%
12/2018   17.37%
12/2019   27.36%
12/2020   37.63%

02/2021   39.63%
03/2021   40.43%
04/2021   42.75%
05/2021   43.07%
06/2021   44.47%
07/2021   45.83%

(And since I'm here, I'm currently at 46.20%, one week into August)

You did 37% in 2 years and you think it will take 4 years to do the remaining 53%?   I'm curious!   Usually the progression speeds up, not slows down.

This is me being (probably overly) conservative. I'm using a linear curve fit based on the data I have starting in 2019. If I switch to 2nd order curve fit, it looks like September 2023 we will hit 100%. I like to see that!

Thanks for the comment, sometimes I think I get overly conservative

Well I celebrate in the high months, so I guess I have to take my lumps in the low ones. This was an expensive month for us because we're in the process of buying a house and spending all the money that goes along with that (inspections/earnest money/etc..). But mostly it was just the market, doing it's wobbly thing that dropped us a bit. Oh well!

September:29.97%37.47%
October:29.64%37.05%

Update:
This is my first down month since the April 2020 dip, which is weird to see on all my tracking. It's crazy how much harder 'bad news' hits than good news.

The markets, obviously, were not kind this month, but I made more than enough income to cover for that short-term loss. What really hit me was home repairs. We bought an old home several years ago and we're finally getting around to fixing a lot of things about it that are in dire need. Paying very big bills over and over has been a hard swallow when watching my NW drop. At the same time, these are some of the easiest bills I've ever paid - why have the money if I'm not going to spend it on a home I plan to keep for 20+ years? And even in what has easily been the most expensive month of my year from both a spending and market loss perspective, I still came out almost even on my Net Worth.

To say I am in an extremely privileged position is the understatement of understatements. And, as @SwordGuy so elegantly put it, stocks are on sale going into October! I put in a bunch of big orders this morning since so much is way, way below my planned buy-in price.

All-in-all, in my 'worst' financial month of 2021, I've come out really well. It's a weird feeling to see the hard work of the past decade paying off.

I think the progress that everyone is making is awesome.   It was so satisfying for me to watch my % FI climb year by year.

And blips in the upward climb of the market help everyone who's not almost at the finish line get there faster, so a few % points drop is actually a good thing when values recover.    Those cheaper stocks purchases will return more wealth that way!

We might be on a somewhat similar trajectory. Let's pull some numbers out. My % is calculated as having 25x (in invested assets) trailing 12 month expenses, starting in August 2015, when my spouse and I married and combined finances. At the time we were at about 14.5%, and renting together. I'll look at year end from there, and then quarterly in the current year (when I log investments... as much as I'd love to log the October 2021 gains!)

2015 (August): 14.5%
2015: 18.0%
2016: 11.8% (ah the difference of a mortgage)
2017: 14.9%
2018: 19.8%
2019: 25.5%
2020: 50.0% (sold rental)
2021 Q1: 56.3%
2021 Q2: 58.6%
2021 Q3: 58.6%

Edited to add: on top of contributions and market gains, the % to RE has also been helped by the USD/EUR rate going up lately. Not by much, but it did have an impact. My RE number includes buying a home in Europe upon retirement, so I set a number in € and convert it to $.
