Learning or Improving at Another Language in 2018
« on: March 14, 2018, 06:45:24 AM »
Since, the last thread was made in 2016, I reckon we need a new one.

I plan to try and maintain my French this year, but if I am being honest. It will be difficult to balance my language skills with studying. I really hoped I could start dedicating time towards Spanish but that might not happen this year.

I will still go to French meetups and try and read the newspaper daily.

I’ll join. I plan to improve my tertiary language by teaching two to three graduate level courses in that language. That’s really stretching me to the limits of my language ability.

I'm in! Goal for 2018 is to complete the French Duolingo program. I was at 50% but haven't practiced in awhile so I've dropped back down to 45%. Once I finish that I want to try to find some type of French meetup group where I can practice speaking French with others.

I'm in.
2018 Spanish goal: Go to at least 3 Spanish meetups. Bonus: make a native Spanish speaking friend that lives in my city.
2018 Korean goal:  Complete Memrise courses 1-3.

Spanish: There are regular Spanish conversation meetups here, but I've never gone.  Meeting new people is intimidating to me, so I'm making meetups my goal for this year.  I get annoyed at Duolingo because it sets me so far back when I haven't opened it in months and months, but this weekend I figured out how to reset the Spanish and take the placement test. Just a few of the more complex verb tenses to polish up, I might finish up tomorrow if we get a snow day. We'll see.  I also added a Memrise course but I haven't tried it yet.  Hoping it will be helpful.
Favorite Spanish podcasts (so far):
Radio Ambulante human interest stories from NPR, has transcriptions and translations for Spanish learners
Coffee Break: Señal y Ruido Science news podcast, made by astrophysicists so it's heavy on the astrophysics stuff. No Spanish learning resources.

Korean:  I'm a complete beginner so Duolingo taking away my progress when I don't practice is helpful.  I'm not sure how far the Duolingo course goes or how fast it progresses so I'm setting my goal in Memrise.  Finishing up Duolingo would be nice too though.

I'm in! My goals are to maintain my French C1 fluency and improve my Spanish to at least get the A1 or A2 diploma this year.

I pretty much use French every day at work, but it's the Spanish I need to work on during my spare time. I'm at 59% of Spanish on Duolingo and I'm taking weekly classes at my local Instituto Cervantes.

Always happy to practice with other Mustachians!

I notice the duolingo was pretty decent for French. Even though I'm more advanced in French than the actual duolingo lesson, it was great to remember some stuff, etc. However, I was a little put off by duolingo in regards to Swahili. The Swahili is pretty bad. As a native speaker I was not on board with how some things are presented, it's not completely awful if you are a beginner, but I was very underwhelmed.

I've been working on German Duolingo, I'm trying to keep my streak up by praticing everyday - I'm at 59 so far!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
