Investments only, solo journey (so far)

December$225,918$370,140$482,944$632,574-

I briefly saw myself hit 700K this past month.  It felt good to see that milestone, but I feel like 750k is the next big hurdle.  Hopefully I can pass it sometime soon.  Already received my federal tax return and should get my state return this next month and whatever stimulus is passed as well.  Got my first COVID vaccine this week and will hopefully get the second shot this next month, so things are looking up.

Bit late with the update but December was still solid, we ended the month at around $702k for another big milestone. 2020 was bonkers as far as year over year gains, partly due to selling it all and throwing it into the market in late July so it's not really 100% fair to compare.

Ever since moving to Europe and living in rented accommodations we have been able to stick to our generous budget and feel good about where the numbers will go in 2021. I might move to quarterly updates as the lack of contributions will this a very slow process.

Who was I kidding, I still check my investments at least every other day even though I'm coasting through a sabbatical.

Will add some high level context to clean it up/be more numbers focused:
January 2018: $95k
January 2019: $142k
January 2020: $264k
January 2021: $702k (invested over $200k from home sale mid 2020)
February 2021: $706k
March 2021: $725k

Let's keep on keeping on.

Paid off the last of my student loans from law school. Feel great about it. Debt-free other than our home.

Congratulations!!!

Thanks so much! Now if I can only get my law school to stop asking me for donations.

John Mulaney captures my thoughts pretty perfectly about colleges asking for donations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiqKK4ysI7g

My husband and I went to the same college. They alternate calling us EVERY WEEK. I get the first and third week of each month, he gets the second and fourth... Honestly, I had a good experience there, I'd being willing to chip in a bit to support scholarships for students. But the frequency of the calls that started the month I graduated and no amount of asking them to stop calling or stopping because we decline the calls has frustrated me enough that they likely will get no money. Ever.

May ‘20: $539k
Jun ‘20: $593k
Jul ‘20: $598k
Aug ‘20: $631k
Sep ‘20: $621k

Continuing the corporate slog as long as I can stand it is at least supported by the impact on my NW #s. As shitty as this pandemic year was in many ways, at least I took a big step towards eventually being able to tell my corporate overlords to stuff it when I FIRE.

November 11, 2020:  $527,000
December 11, 2020:  $607,796 (501,797 euros). This month's total is more accurate than last month's, because I actually did the euro conversions and the math with a calculator instead of just spitballing it.  I STILL don't have an answer from the government about how much taxes they want for 2019, but I don't think it's going to bust my butt back down under 500K DOLLARS.

Thanks to a previous mathematical error on my part, a good stock market (for now), the resolution of my tax situation, and clients paying before year-end, I've rocketed past 500K in both euros and dollars, so drum roll please:

January 4, 2020:  564,565 in euros/692,608 in dollars.

The dollar is just limping along and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some improvement in 2021 but am not optimistic on that front.  Next stop 750K in dollars because that'll mean I'm halfway through this stage.  Will have to have a good year for that to happen.

I have officially made it to 750K in dollars.

March 5, 2021:  642,068 in euros/764,565 in dollars!  March will probably be a good month too.  Next stop 900K.

@use2betrix @Dr Kidstache Alright you guys are on the most similar trajectory to me.  I'm following y'all/youse to keep myself accountable.

1/1/20: 491k
2/1/20: 525k
3/1/20: 538k
4/1/20: 477k
5/1/20: 444k
6/4/20: 595k
7/1/20: 596k
8/1/20: 639k
9/1/20: 655k
10/1/20: 692k
11/1/20: 687k
12/1/20: 793k
12/31/20: 813k
1/23/21: 864k
2/3/21: 883k
2/28/21: 893k

I wonder if smaller net worth brackets would work better (for me.)  Like, race from 1-1.1, 1.1-1.2 etc.  I'm going to make one if/when I graduate from this thread.

For most people with their net worth invested, the $100k jumps after $1MM will likely happen quick if they’re still working and have been accumulating rapidly.

The $500k-$1MM is a pretty big jump. While I’ll keep tracking and saving the same past $1MM, I won’t feel like I have a major “milestone goal” past a million. Simply “being a millionaire” is going to reap some sweet satisfaction.

I track 12/24 month gains in my net worth spreadsheet.

For most of the last 5 years it's been about $100k/year gains year over year. If the market keeps going like it's been going that interval it's pretty crazy how fast things go up. But, the more you have invested, the more major market corrections impact things.

I was happy that even in last years dip our year over year net worth was a gain (but barely). A 30%+ drop in this year would make that pretty challenging to pull off indefinitely.

I'm officially joining this club. My invested net worth is $850k or so, depending on market fluctuations. I'm recently divorced and that number is half of what it was last year when combined with my ex.

I'm not sure what my new number is based on all my life changes. I also know that I am probably sticking where I am until my youngest graduates from high school in 12 years. I've gone from planning to stop working as soon as possible to planning to work for another 13 years 😂. And it's all fabulous because I'm doing it on my terms.

Thank you @Trifele for the welcome.  I do not have a number set at this time, still some big upcoming life changes to settle into before nailing down a number.  Next goal is 750k invested and a paid off mortgage, hoping to achieve both by 2025.  Will be revaluating at that point but until then, i'll be updating here periodically.

Welcome @LostGirl -- nice job rolling with the punches and staying the course.

Welcome @Closer2theSKY -- Yeah this thread is quite the ride, where you can see your money start to work harder than you can.  Market drops can be quite gut-wrenching until you get used to it.  Seatbelt buckled? ;)

Jumping in to watch the 'stache grow along with others! We hit the $500k mark in July of 2020 and are sitting at $626k as of January 2021. I only update the net worth quarterly because I don't want to get too excited or stressed by short term market fluctuations.

Question: How do you, or do you, include pensions in a net worth calculation? My DW is only 35, but could get full pension if she worked until 60 and reduced amounts for less service time. I read this article, but I'd be interested to see what others do.

I basically count "birds in the hand." So I'd take the pension I would get if I quit today and multiply the annual amount by 25 to include in my stash. If I quit today and got nothing that number would be a big goose-egg.

The basis of my FIRE journey is freedom from obligation, so anything that would decree how I live (staying at a golden handcuff job, etc) isn't included until it's real. I don't make decisions based purely on that basis but do on how close FIRE is.

Alternatively, I would probably figure out my fire date and then if I could calculate the exact pension if I quit that year I would use the same "formula" above. May be an iterative process there (if the number is big the fire date should be earlier).

Question: How do you, or do you, include pensions in a net worth calculation? My DW is only 35, but could get full pension if she worked until 60 and reduced amounts for less service time. I read this article, but I'd be interested to see what others do.

https://www.financialsamurai.com/how-do-i-calculate-the-value-of-my-pension/

I like this approach. I wouldn't want my DW to feel obligated to work decades longer than needed just for the pension.

running to the pension website to update calculations

Hello
We crossed the half million networth this March. It took 3.5 years to double it from 250000 CHF. We will see how fast we will reach a million. The total networth target is between 1.5 and 2 million CHF (including house).

That's incredible growth over 1 and 1/4 years! You and I were about equal last summer and then you hit the turbo boost lol.

The markets have returned well over this time period, but can I ask how much you're contributing monthly? Your savings rate had gotta be fantastic, are there any other multipliers you've found to help you out?

@racquetcat I also want to know the tricks @Icecreamarsenal is applying to his/her incredible money collection journey!!!  Same here, last summer I was around the same number as icecream and then he/she used the turbo button and left me behind :)

Congratulations @Icecreamarsenal, what an amazing run so far! You are an inspiration to many of us :)

Example: from 11/1/20 to 12/1/20 an increase of 106K!

Keep up the great work!

Welcome @Erma!  Is frugality popular in Switzerland?  A cousin of mine (Swiss) told me that she knew her husband was a keeper when they started dating, and she could tell "er wusste, was eine Rappe wert war."  :)

Hey, thanks!  I had to do some digging to try and find out what I've been doing.  And the answer is...nothing special.  My average savings rate in '19 was 51% of net, '20 was 57%, and '21 to date is 72%. I auto-invest 8k/mo into vtsax.  I have a paid-off house that I don't count.
No bitcoin, and 5% individual stocks that I sell covered calls on.
Let's do this!

@Icecreamarsenal, thanks for the information, that is great! I actually did double checked the increase from November to December and I now remember it was the largest  monthly gain since I have been investing for 13.9% of gains, so that explains a lot, I added a total of 83K.  Wondering if there would be a month this year close to that large amount of gains and/or we can even break that record!

No crypto here as well, 100% stock mainly VTSAX in taxable brokerage and similar index funds in Fidelity 401k.

You will make it this year (as long as there is not crazy collapse of the system) and I am sure racquetcat and me will join you in the next thread soon after that.  All the best!!!!!!!!!!

@Icecreamarsenal
That's a great savings rate and it's great to hear a success story where you're just saving and investing, it's simple, but it WORKS.....

And that is inspiring!!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
