Thank You @fireforfun and @MikeO . Mikeo, I'm in your neck of the woods. Similar age and income(not this year LOL). Similar goal on when to retire.

I am looking forward to be in this race soon and posting to follow for inspiration.

We have been tracking our progress in 250K-500K race so far. This end of this month we have about 400K in liquid investments and closing in on 600K in net worth after including real estate and related 30 year fixed mortgage.

5/20 - $668,874     $949803

It's exciting to see I'm back to December level...until I think about the $20,000+ we've contributed in that time.  But, as always, it doesn't matter.  I'm retiring in 13 months (as of today) regardless of the size of the stash.

Pretty much recovered from the initial drop and was able to put my yearly bonus in while things were on sale. I'm lucky that my yearly bonus is in March every year.
NW is over 600K for this first time ever so that is cool too.

Good gains for the month, saved a lot and some good market growth. I’ve invested about $70k of my cash reserves and savings over the last 3-4 months and it’s going to pay off big as the market keeps recovering (whether it’s in 3 months or 12 months).

Even with the market down, I’m still up about $75k for the year. My actual savings this year is about $80k, so pretty dang good considering the market..

I've graduated from NW 1MM but most of my nw is tied up in real estate, and who really knows what that stuff is worth in this era.
I'm going to use this thread to hold my post-tax account accountable.

5/3/20: 64k

6/4/20: 595k
It's been a wild and scary ride with options in $C, $TSLA, $FLIR, and $DKNG, to name a few.  Gonna go back to conservative MMM mode.

Really for myself.  Graduated NW 1Mm last year, then decided to recalc without real estate.  Originally was going to do post-tax investment accounts then decided to lump it all for easier tracking.  Made some quick money with options trading.  Will continue to trade options but most money is DCA into Vanguard mutual funds with tax loss harvesting every month when applicable.

5/1/2020 $277k LNW / $820k TNW
1/1/2020 $297k LNW / $834k TNW
5/1/2020 $242k LNW / $764k TNW

@tips^up , that's a lot of non-liquid assets. You in a paid-for home?

2 houses in an expensive and desirable area - our primary and a rental.  The rental has 2 units, our primary home has a lock-off basement, so 3 total rental units.  Bought the rental in 2013, substantial equity.  Both are included in my total net worth estimate by the following calculation:
(Estimated market value * 94%) - loan balance = real estate equity

I am an appraiser by trade, so the market value is updated when necessary (every 6 months to year or so).  94% is the estimated net after 6% selling costs.  Loan balances being paid down by renters every month, we essentially have no rent/mortgage, so I've been able to accelerate savings.

My largest (3 bedroom) unit just rented out starting 6/1 for $3k+utilities immediately.  There was 0 hours of vacancy, very high demand, no drop in rent.  I was surprised and mentally prepared to encounter covid-19 conditions, but not the case here at this time.

Looking at another up/down duplex tomorrow.  I'd like to add a few more rentals to surpass my "job" income, then coast off into FIRE.

2013   -$14,500.00

2/1/2020   $500,122.69
3/1/2020   $497,515.82
4/1/2020   $489,899.65
5/1/2020   $513,921.29

I'm joining you folks on my next goal of a $1,000,000! Started focusing on this journey in 2013 with a negative net worth. 7 years later and I'm over half a mill. This is networth but excludes my wife's assets. Depending on my forecast, it should be 5-6 years so let's say July 2025. I've had some good years where I've been way ahead of forecast, but don't want to get too cocky. Current estimate is fully FI at 47, 12.5 years away.

Guys, I was wondering -- do most people include pensions in their numbers?  My DH has a mini state pension that starts at age 55 and I've never included it as part of our savings number.  (Just being conservative, I guess, since it's not "money in the hand.")  He starts getting it next year though, so it's seeming a lot more real now.

If I want to include it, do I take the expected annual payout and multiply by 25 for the value?

I include my mini pension, but just the current cash of the account, which is the amount I would receive if I withdrew it today.  I think trying to calculate the future value is too speculative to include in NW.  But NW is a somewhat useless number, it's good for tracking your overall financial health, but doesn't necessarily correlate with RE.

Thanks @charis -- It doesn't look like there is any ability to withdraw a lump sum from this plan.  Looks like the value lies in the ongoing payments.  I could do something like multiply the annual benefit by the number of years of life expectancy?  Then maybe decrease that a bit to reflect the possibility that the state could decrease the amount or stop payments?  (Honestly I can't imagine that happening.  I think there would be a big outcry if the state tried to tinker with teacher's pensions ...)

When summarizing my net worth, be it for your own personal records, or if you would like for this thread, I would simply outline the high level benefits of the pension. Maybe at the beginning (or end) simply add, “*Pension of $xxxx/mo to start January 1, 2021” or similar.

People calculate their net worth all sorts of different ways around here. Some include a house, some don’t. Others include rental properties, other’s don’t.

I'm not tracking net worth in this thread, just retirement accounts . . .  So I guess it makes sense to leave it out.   I like your thinking @use2betrix that it is income, not a retirement asset.  I'll think of it that way.

These threads are basically for fun and a little bit of motivation.  You can use whatever method works for you to achieve those goals.

For more serious use, you want to track the things that form the basis of your retirement calculations ( the 4% rule ) along with how you calculate your expenses to feed into the 4% rule.

So, for example, i have 2 pensions.  I have a cash pension for which i get statements and that i can choose to cash out and rollover into my personal ira whenever I choose to leave my employer.  I do include that number in my NW.   i have another traditional pension that is a monthly income when i reach retirement age.  I don't count that one toward NW, but I do keep that income in mind for calculating my income during retirement.  It supplements my 4% rule income, just as any social security income will do.

The only time you would truly need to get into the weeds on present cash value for a traditional pension is if you had to divide assets in a  divorce or something equally unpleasant.

The difficulty with using pensions is that you have to keep track of the COLA and how it compares to your own personal rate of inflation. If you expect steadily increasing medical care expenses, for example, that could affect things more than your income will rise.

So have not looked since March 2nd, but here is the update....

                       2014                2015                2016                2017                2018                2019                2020                2021
January$-$292,190$304,411$437,806$581,831$615,789$767,806-
February$-$332,002$331,197$162,424$585,663$662,207$735,649-
March$-$332,209$331,749$481,340$583,773$683,014$683,851-
April$-$336,743$260,548$483,994$582,862$719,849$734,510-
May$256,131$338,884$373,153$483,982$585,929$701,938$760,661-
June$258,642$321,529$377,807$490,951$590,577$731,170$777,705-
July$276,381$320,767$414,764$503,706$601,024$721,753--
August$296,700$313,896$405,676$513,111$606,442$686,503--
September$290,244$301,079$422,204$525,158$610,690$698,968--
October$274,986$308,291$413,967$533,760$585,817$577,615--
November$282,762$308,558$419,572$549,074$595,773$620,036--
December$292,942$312,281$431,458$557,941$575,877$760,501--

I added about $10K in during this time, as we've been very blessed over this time to both keep our jobs (pay cut on my end that last indefinitely), including more work for my self employed wife than she had before the pandemic started which was totally unexpected.  The side hustles also helped both cover the paycut and add to the stash as I have been able to make over $6K doing that since late February, so I have a goal of making $16.5K in 12 months from that which would cover my paycut and the extra savings I was targeting the side hustle for and given that this was 4 months so far, should be doable even by pulling back a bit.

So overall really pleased on how things are going.
