Well, I’m back.  It was a fun few months of a second comma while it lasted.

Looks like I'm down at least 40k so far (though I haven't checked in about a week so who knows now). Please keep a placeholder in my seat here while I'm back below 500k.

Anyone have a guess on how long the rebound will take? I have a great chart on the history of bear/bull markets that says 2008 took about 1.5 years.

In the 08-09 Recession, the market dropped ~57% and took 4 yrs to get back it what it was.

The timing on 2008 depends on how you measure the bear market. I was thinking of this chart, that if I'm reading correctly just counts to the lowest close, but not the recovery following.

Thanks for the great chart coffeefueled!  Very interesting.  It's great to take a 30,000 foot view of the historical data.

That chart is deceiving. It only saying the bear lasted only 1.3 yrs but it doesn't tell you how long it took to get back to the original mark.
If you had $1 million right before the 08-09 recession and didn't touch your account. It took you 4 years to get back to that original $1 million.
I mean we can try to spin these losses in anyway we want, it will take a long long time for you to get your NW back to where it was before Feb 19th. And the downward spiral is not done.

I'm still very much in accumulation phase so whether you measure the downturn by time until the bottom like the chart or when you recover the original amount pre downturn (which you're right is a much more useful measurement) I'm not worried. I'm lucky enough to have a stable job that's not going to downsize no matter how bad it gets (I'm in government). If you're not retiring anytime soon then the downturn is a benefit ie stocks on sale.

 I understand that not everyone is in that position and I'm definitely thankful that my extended family had been conservative in their retirement so they can concentrate on staying healthy and not their finances.

Just getting my excel sheets updated ready for last day of the month... lordy its not pretty.
In a way I am lucky in that I started the process to move my SIPP to Vanguard right as this happened so my SIPP was in cash.
I am still going to be down at least 20k this month though unless the markets have a good day tomorrow!

I am much more optimistic.  There has been no actual loss of demand.  This downturn is virtually incomparable to anything before as it is not caused by any economic situations or demand drops.  It is caused by forced isolation needed to limit the number of deaths which, not done, WOULD have an economic impact because of the massive hit to a labor force which then would not be available after the virus runs its course.

I've heard Robert Reich talk about this situation in a very interesting interview.  I've heard some other economists mimic the same thinking.  Once people can move around again things will rebound faster than we have seen in the past because the demand in still there.  As I have told my father who is in Chicken Little mode, people are not suddenly never going to want to fly again.  People are not suddenly never going to want to eat out again.  These businesses taking a bath right now will have trouble, companies may even fail, but when things get back to healthy people there will be a new company to fill the void quickly.  Most banks have been predicting a "V" curve, a rapid 20-40% drop in GDP in the 2nd quarter and perhaps a drop in the 3rd though not as high and then a quick rise in either the 3rd or 4th quarter.  Unless fundamental demand curves morph no real data based reason this does not make sense.

Stash dropped below $500K but I got an extra $10K (yearly bonus) into the market at 2017 prices so I'm not complaining.

Alright, I haven't posted since year end, been pretty busy, got a solar array up and running which is neat.

I see the market has been a little unkind lately but for all the drama I am only set back to where I was around last June. Some 10 short months ago.

This is, of course, because I am adding to my accounts to the tune of 4-6k a month in before tax funds. I assume, if I stay employed, that I will come out the other side of this richer than otherwise.

The market is down another 4% today, so that will wipe out 20~k give or take, so had I made this post tomorrow, I would probably be down 100k. Still only 10-11 months ago.

Perspective matters.

Should get a modest 401k match and a small bonus in April, so at least I’ll be able to pick up a few shares at a relative discount.

I joined this race last July, when I was well above $500k.  So, unless someone objects, I’m not quitting now just because I’m further behind than when I started.  Guess you guys are stuck with me :).

I technically reported March 31st numbers since I really didn’t want to face todays drop (like so many other recent drops). I was hoping to hold onto $500k, which I was still at in late March, but alas, I did not weather that storm.

Looking like the road will be pretty bumpy for a while. Fortunately we are investing heavily right now as long as I’m still employed. As an energy sector employee, the market volatility and oil price crash has potentially impacted my potential future work outlook. Holding on for the time being.

12/16 - $360,891     $570,338
12/17 - $473,407     $697,411
12/18 - $480,550     $732,108
12/19 - $669,819     $943,739

01/20 - $675,940     $951,251
02/20 - $632,514     $909,220

3/20 -   $570,114     $848,227

Ouch!  When we first started saving seriously for retirement in 2016, I thought if we could just make it to $600,000 by 2022, that would be enough.  Then the market went crazy and I started thinking if we had $750 or 800 or 850, that would be awesome.  Now...I'm back to thinking if we have $600,000 in 2021 (because we want to OLY), that will be enough.

We just closed on the sale of a property, so I'm taking the proceeds from that to pay down all the little debts here and there that built up during our "two payments" period. It turned out there are a few more debts than I realized

I'm back to where I was one year ago with market losses. That was the month I joined the Race from 500k - still in the club by a squeaker.  I'm still making regular investment contributions but investing a smaller amount. I've shifted some of my usual investment money to charitable giving.

I recently sold a house, and saw my first mint.com report without that property (and the accompanying mortgage). Not entering the new mortgage/property because I'm a lot more guarded with my data now than I was then, but it also means I don't see that second comma now. It's bitter-sweet to be back, guys.

I guess it's not too bad considering the majority of our NW is in the stock market.   We've been able to add a decent amount into investments and rebalance the portfolio several times through this crash.  I would not complain if we saw the market go lower for a while... This could be our golden opportunity...

Work has been crazy busy since the stay-at-home orders came in my state. I haven't had much time to breath, though I have been almost laughing at the news alerts that were coming almost daily about the rises and falls of the market.

I logged into my accounts today and while the number isn't pretty, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. The good news is that my spending is down and I should have a refinanced mortgage in a few weeks.

02/01/2020 - $806,540
03/04/2020 - $825,904
04/14/2020 - $752,116

Hang in there, everyone!

Morning everyone!

Jan 2017 - £346,854
===============
Jan 2018 - £456,088
===============
Jan 2019 - £495,379
===============
Jan 2020 - £606,791
Feb 2020 - £598,230 (-£8,561)
Mar 2020 - £622,178 (+£23,948)
Apr 2020 - £587,380 (-£34,798)
May 2020 - £605,014 (+£17,364)

Wow, just look at the volatility so far this year! Markets are up over 20% since last month which has help this months figure, although its dented somewhat by having to pay my yearly Corporation Tax bill.

I also unintentionally timed the market back in March as I transferred £100k of pensions to a new provider which meant I missed the market drop and then bought back in at the bottom.

My current contract ends in August so the plan is to (hopefully) to be at £665k, but who knows in this currently climate.
