You inspired me to make a spreadsheet for when we will hit $1 million (net worth) given possible market performance. We're investing $6k/month plus and reducing debt by about $2.3k/month. Currently at $885k net worth with $737k invested.

20% returns: 6 months
10% returns: 9 months
6% returns: 12 months
3% returns: 15 months
0.5% returns: 18 months
-0.9% returns: 21 months
-2% returns: 24 months
-3% returns: 28 months
-4% returns: 34 months
-5% returns: 42 months
-6% returns: 55 months
-7% returns: 82 months (this return over this length of period has happened only once, I believe)
-8% returns: 165 months (this has never happened)
-9% returns: Never

So best case scenario we'll finish this race in a matter of months and worst case it will be almost 7 years. That's quite a possible gap! Better than 90% chance it will be under 3 years though.

Yeah, it really makes you realize how much market volatility matters to start doing the math.

But it makes sense; if you have $500k investments, 10% is $50k. Going up vs down is a $100k net worth swing. Even "just" 5% market swings are a $50k net worth difference.

Year         Liquid Assets     Net Worth    Note
2004.12    -$7K                 same           started marriage with $17K in student loans from undergrad
2005.12    $11K                same
2006.12    $33K                same
2007.12    $62K                same
2008.12    $58K                same           recession!! Also bought used car with $10K in cash
2009.12    $102K              same           paid off student loans!!!
2010.12    $146K              same
2011.12    $187K              same
2012.12    $205K              $266K          bought our first home for $176.5K; put down $50K
2013.12    $186K              $362K          paid off our mortgage. If I had a time machine I'd do things differently.
2014.12    $227K              $420K
2015.12    $242K              $431K          adopted our daughter; minor surgery for her
2016.12    $244K              $473K          adopted our son; major surgery for him
2017.12    $393K              $622K          minor surgery for our son
2018.12    $437K              $742K          major surgery for our son

Going forward, we intend to keep the mortgage and make the minimum required payments only so we can maximum investments returns.

2019.12    $729K              $891K          downsized; used $275K proceeds from home sale to ramp up investments
2020.02    $763K              $927K

After an extended break from work to be a SAHM, I will be returning to work teaching at a university this fall!! I am excited for this new chapter in my life, and my husband is looking forward to being able to take a break from work or at least shift into a less stressful job. The current plan is for him to continue working another couple of years to maximize the benefits of his current job and reach financial independence. We'll both be around 40 years old at that time. My pay, while more than adequate for our needs, will be substantially less than his current salary. So we've decided to balance aggressive investment with accelerated mortgage payoff for now, hoping to finish paying off our mortgage at the same time that he leaves his current job.

This is phenomenal progress given the medical situations you have had.  Your savings rate is clearly quite high.

Thanks @caracarn ! You are doing very well yourself! We have always been frugal, but we let things slip quite a bit in the early years of parenthood and we were spendy by mustachian standards in 2018 especially. Last year was the year of big change for us, returning to our frugal roots. We now live on roughly 25% of our regular monthly gross pay. When hubby receives his annual bonuses, we give some away, eat a meal or two out, top off the vacation bucket, and then invest the rest. I also had the immense privilege of receiving roughly $110K in inheritance from my late grandmother, spread over the past 7 years. I am so grateful for our situation in life. I mean, I'm returning to work because I miss it and my children are now old enough to be in school full-time! The money is an afterthought. Many are nowhere near as fortunate.

And I'm back under 500K with the market dip... Hope to take advantage of the sale and be back above the line sometime in the next few weeks. It's amazing to see how much market volatility changes my net worth now that I have more invested. Back down in the 100-250k range it didn't see to make a noticeable difference.

Same here.  I didn't check my investments this week until today and was surprised to see the 22K drop in our NW.  Not unpleasantly surprised since I was intellectually prepared for a larger dip at our current, larger level of investment due to reading here.  I have some cash that I was waiting to invest next week.  There's no reason not to due it now, but it feels wrong, like market timing.

Do NOT log into your investments right now. If you're committed to stay the course--and a 10% downturn should be part of that course--don't even tempt yourself into selling. GL

But then how would we rebalance and tax loss harvest?

But then how would we rebalance and tax loss harvest?

Already tax-loss harvested twice this week, including a big chunk this morning.  Might have more opportunities to do so if things continue.  I might have to start thinking about whether or not to continue doing so once I've got enough losses to cover $3000 per year for the rest of my expected full-time working career.  I'm anticipating our tax bracket being low enough in RE that additional tax losses might not be so useful.

Dude, you're going the wrong way!

If you only lost 18k this month out of over $800k, I think you did pretty darn well.  I'll tally mine up this weekend, but I'm expecting to be down close to $100k from the peak, perhaps $80k on the month, and I'm not even 100% stocks.  Will have to decide whether or not to officially rejoin this thread from the wrong direction.

Hah, I told my wife yesterday since we're buying a house now too that our net worth is going to drop a ton these few months - the way I report our house on mint.com is to put it in as sale price - 7%, so if you buy a $100k house it shows up as $93k for tracking purposes.

Between that in a month or so and the market fluctuations... gonna be a "fun" month of net worth lol!

Well, at first the market losses were a bit disappointing until I realized (1) I'm still ahead of where I was just five months ago, and (2) more importantly, shares are much cheaper now than they were last month (I'm still in the accumulation phase so this is actually exciting).  Who knows if the slide will continue or if we will bounce back quickly like in early 2019.  I think the former is more likely than the latter.  But, either way, my investment strategy hasn't changed.  Onward and upward.

Sidenote, seems like fewer people are posting updates this month.  Maybe it's because month end fell on a weekend. ;).

Mar 2, 2020: $861.9k - you win some months you lose some. I started investing in 2009 so I've had a really good run over the last decade. I was always curious to know how I'd react in a larger decline than I've seen before, I think losing $50k in a month on paper (and really more since we added to the pot) this month was a good test. Turns out I didn't change anything at all but I was happy my paycheck went into my 401k on Friday  :). I have a bonus hitting in two weeks so I wouldn't mind if the market stays down for a little longer, money goes in either way though, set it and forget it. In the long run it won't change much.

And.... boom.  Coronavirus crash.  I added about $3K into the market last Monday, but the drop made things far worse than that.  But hey, got some stocks a bit cheaper than I would have.  Still trusting the process, so will keep adding per my plan (which includes side hustle money from food delivery that I started last week and my first funds from that got sent last night from DoorDash, so when I get them, will be moving over).

Like most others, we’re down for the month of March. Still up about $13k for the year, although our actual “savings” has been closer to $35k. Not too worried about the market as It’ll be a while before I intend to access any funds. I did drop another $15k out of my FU Fund into VTSAX last Thursday/Friday. Have another $30k that’s ready to go, but with today’s rebound, I’ll still hold off a bit longer.

Markets took a tumble in the UK like everywhere else, however net worth is still up due to combination of business income and £20k of cash due to inheritance.

Will drop it straight into Vanguard Lifestrategy 60 while it’s in a dip so hopefully will see an uplift at some point in the future.

I deliberately didn't check any accounts last week except to throw a few thousand into my Roth while the market was down.

However, I had a nice surprise when I found out that I hadn't added one of my accounts to Personal Capitol. My accounts are really down, even though it looks like the value is higher.

Hang in there, everyone. The news this morning is that markets are doing better after Super Tuesday...even though we still don't know how California went at this hour.

02/20 - $632,514     $909,220

The last big drop (at the end of 18) bothered me so I didn't track my numbers.  I regretted that...so I'm documenting here even though it's a big, dang drop.  Of course, it's corrected some this week so it's better now (but I don't know by how much since I only look at the end of the month).

Interestingly, I noticed that Betterment changed their home screen. It now displays overall investment gain since opening accounts instead of the usual detailed breakdown of accounts. Some of their cognitive psychology tweaks for the downturn, I guess. I wonder if it keeps people from panicking.

I'm holding my nose and DCA'ing the bonus into the market even though I think we have more drops ahead of us. I wrote down a commitment that I must put it all in by the end of March. It's all going into VTSAX and VTIAX since my bonds are way over my AA with the recent market drops.

Totals above are net worth from mint and do not include primary residence (mortgage about 1/2 paid off, but I've stopped overpaying in favor of investing after finding these forums).

Fully expecting to fall back into the 250-500k thread if things get really bad with COVID19.
I am already down from £650k to £640 and its not even got going in the UK.  Tough times ahead :(

We were sooo close to the $1 million mark before the virus.
Were sitting around the $991k mark. Will not make it now.
I'm guessing my company will be shutting down real soon. No work for me for a while.

Whelp, I've "lost" about $150k on paper thus far and am enjoying this buying opportunity!  It was my regular mid-month paycheck stock purchase day yesterday, I saved $35 dollars a share compared to the last time I purchased VTI in January.

Here's to money going further buying the dip!

I'm going to join in this group after the market drop. I don't think that the market is going to recover quickly from COVID. I think we have some actual economy hits, not just panic drop. So I may be here for a year or so. But I will enjoy buying stocks on sale.

I didn't keep track of my net worth until the last several years, but here is what I have. I also try to update only twice a year. Of course, I'll probably be checking more often during this crisis. :(

3-2020: NW $1.040M; Invested $0.786M (during COVID)
2-2020: NW $1.350M; Invested $1.101M (before COVID)
2-2019: NW $0.977M; Invested $0.630M
2-2018: NW $0.833M; Invested $0.901M
10-2017: NW $0.727M; Invested $0.797M
2016:
2015:
2014:
2013: NW ~$0; Invested ~$100K

And we are back in this thread! Hi again, everyone!

We've beefed up our emergency fund, and any extra will be saved and shoveled into index funds. if we go back to 2015 prices (which is when we first started seriously investing), I would be extremely happy, since our incomes now are higher and we are able to put more money in.

I don't belong to this thread yet, but have been creepily lurking. I hear people saying 500k is the milestone after which you start to see crazy gains, can anyone comment on their experience with this?
Just squeaked in at $502k on 4/1/19 so I'm hoping you're right haha. So we'll see how the progress goes from here.
The gains have definitely exceeded my expectations as we're past 600k now, less than a year since hitting 500k.
And I'm back out of here, below 500k now.

Denied.

Once in the 500k to 1mil race, we never let you go. It's just a brief pause, in support of social distancing. ;)

It's a double whammy for us this month. Market uncertainty + house purchase.

The way I calculate net worth on house is basically that the house is worth what we pay minus ~7%. So if I bought a $100k house, I'd calculate it as $93k in value (to account for sale costs).

Soo, buying a nice house at the end of the month means we'll drop another ~$25k or so (I'll probably adjust it down based on the full costs the sellers pay at closing whatever that ends up being).

Going to be a pretty depressing net worth entry on 3/31 for me, lol.

Looks like I'm down at least 40k so far (though I haven't checked in about a week so who knows now). Please keep a placeholder in my seat here while I'm back below 500k.

Anyone have a guess on how long the rebound will take? I have a great chart on the history of bear/bull markets that says 2008 took about 1.5 years.

*Pulls out ferret bones* Well, let's see . . .

*tosses. scrutinizes.* Yeah, not a clue.

Down $251,000 from the 19 February peak thus far. I re-balanced today, so yay for sticking with my investment plan. I'm not going to look at it again for as long as I can get away with.

Of note, I have never previously had to sell anything to re-balance to goal allocation (I use the lazy 3 portfolio, with 10% BND, 24% VXUS, 66% VTI). I always used contributions. That changed this morning. I feel like there was some personal growth. I wept, threw a tantrum, gnashed my teeth, screamed my rage into the world, rolled my eyes at myself and did it anyway.

I haven't looked at my investments more or less out of fear. I don't think I want to see the number... lol. My bi-weekly 401k contributions go towards 100% stocks, so I may not actually need to rebalance as much as I might think. But I guess quarterly rebalancing is coming up at the end of the month. My portfolio is 20% bonds which are close to flat YTD. I feel like we still have more to go before hitting bottom. Another 200-400 points on the S&P? Rebalancing now I guess is still a pretty good deal 20 years from now.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
