Can't wait to see what we'll accomplish in 2020. I heard the next $500k goes a lot faster. Anyone have estimates/predictions on how the time to graduate to the next thread changes? I hope we can hit it in five years.

Depends on what the stock market/real estate markets do, honestly.

If you have $500k in investments and add $50k a year, a 10% drop basically wipes out your contributions. But if it goes up 10% then your contributions are doubled ($50k+$50k growth).

Count me in!

Dec 2016 402K
Dec 2017 585K
Dec 2018 628K
Dec 2019 802K

Large jumps in 2017 and 2019 partly due to sale of investment properties.

Not sure when/if I'll get to 1m; may semi-FIRE before then.
If the market were to stay flat, would probably hit 1m investible around 6 months from now.
Not declaring victory yet though until I have 1m investible and no debt to the bank.
Net worth is clearly north of $1m now, and we even have more than $1m invested/investible, but still not debt free
So, net worth hits $1.5m for the first time.
Net worth drops back down to where it was 6 months ago.
Down 9.3% from peak
Liquidity down, home equity up, debt down, savings rate 0% so totally reliant on market returns to get back above 1m in investible/invested assets.
So at this point my savings rate is still stuck at 0%, house will soon be paid off, and still reliant on market returns.

2020 yearly update:

Saved $0 since last update; all increases are from market returns. May be able to pay off house by end of year, or if not, soon after. After that, expect savings rate to go up again.

  • 2020: 918k liquid + 478k home equity: total 1,396k (debt: 30k)
  • Q2 2019: 860k liquid + 466k home equity: total 1,326k (debt: 40k)
  • Q1 2019: 877k liquid + 440k home equity: total 1,317k (debt: 46k)
  • Q4 2018: 990k liquid + 389k home equity: total 1,379k (debt: 104k)

Joining this race.  Currently at $692,000 NW.  For context:

10/1/15 - $181,000
10/1/16 - $267,000
10/1/17 - $408,800
10/1/18 - $553,000

10/1/19 - $692,000
1/1/20 - $752,000

This increase is partially sale of SARS at the end of the year, but also it’s just a good time to be in the stock market.  We’ll see how long it lasts!

Here's my update for January. I posted last March after crossing the 1M mark in NW. We are planning to sell our primary residence, move, and rent for the next couple of years. A little more than half of the equity is going to the portfolio. Doing the math, that puts the portfolio value just over 1M, so says the spreadsheet.

2019-Jan    /    557k    /    941k
2019-Feb    /    584k    /    981k
2019-Mar    /    593k    /    1007k
2019-Apr    /    632k    /    1042k
2019-May    /    616k    /    1018k
2019-Jun    /    648k    /    1046k
2019-Jul    /    654k    /    1057k
2019-Aug    /    644k    /    1047k
2019-Sep    /    663k    /    1067k
2019-Oct    /    690k    /    1097k
2019-Nov    /    729k    /    1135k
2019-Dec    /    749k    /    1160k
2020-Jan    /    1015k*    /    1204k

*note most of the big jump in portfolio value between Dec'19 and Jan'20 is from moving some home equity over.

2020 should be good for us here.

I think we'll be able to save about $35k in my 401k, $5k in HSA, and perhaps $12k in Roth IRAs (or cash savings).

Depends a lot on what we end up doing for housing but either way should be close to $50k in savings, just not sure in what medium yet :-)  If we buy a house we may end up doing the heretical thing and aggressively paying it down.

Really enjoyed this format that I saw from several others.  Was not tracking monthly, but redid this for the new format and provides a nice way to see year over year growth.

Glad I waited until yesterday’s big drop was over before reporting. Still a pretty good month. It was one of the rare 3 paycheck months (paid bi-weekly, three Fridays this month) so that helped a lot. Spending was also good for the month.

Ready to keep on trucking. $500k-$1MM seems like it’s going to take a lot longer than the $250k-$500k, even though it will be pretty close if I keep on my current path (should hit $1MM in two years barring nothing majorly out of my control)

Can I join? I've been a "set it and forget it" type investor since my first job. I've been having money put in my 403b and Roth for 20 years and also have a traditional IRA. Stumbling on the FIRE movement in December made me realize that I could retire from education early by paying more attention to my finances. I already switched the fund in which my Roth was invested because of all the reading I've been doing. Next up, I'll figure out a better mix for my traditional IRA.

We passed $1M in net worth (counting kids' college funds and home equity) this month, which is an exciting and completely meaningless milestone.  I judge myself by invested assets.

2013 EOY - 295k (+37k college funds)
2014 EOT - 337k (+48k college)
2015 EOY - 366k (+54k college)
2016 EOY - 432k (+63k college)
2017 EOY - 532k (+82k college)
2018 EOY - 590k (+97k college)
2019 EOY - 721k (+111k college)

2020 Jan - 721k (+114k college)

We have fully funded oldest kid's college fund, and are 65% for two youngest kids.  Retirement savings are at about 40% of target.

House sale is finalized.

The amount of on hand cash we have is mindblowing for our lives. Transferred some money and we now have one account with $100k in it. In cold hard greenbacks as they say (well, electronic ones).

It's weird to think how few years ago this would have been all of our net worth and now, well, it's not.

Or... if we rented I could just not work for a few years :)

MAJOR MILESTONE (temporarily) ACHIEVED!!! goal to Investments = $1M.

Shortly, we'll be dipping into some of these investments to complete the renovation of our new house, but in the meantime, we've gotten to see what it is like to hit our Investment goal of $1M. It is delightful to witness and I look forward to seeing it again much later this year.  In the meantime, thanks for this grey, dank, February moment of victory.

(We've slowed down saving since we've bought a new house, took money out of the investments account for a downpayment, and start a major remodel also using money from our investments. Meanwhile, we are carrying our current house too until we can move into the new one and sell the old.)

date         NW        Investments
4/3/14     $430k         $225k
9/19/14    $500k         $275k

9/7/16     $700k         $410k
5/6/17     $750k         $674k (*I think I lost history on one of our accounts prior to this)
9/9/17     $800k         $717k
11/22/17   Assets hit $1M
12/15/17   $850k         $770K
3/10/18    $900k         $770k (refinanced house, put $ in and moved from 30 to 15 yrs)

12/26/18   $900k         $750k

Woohoo, good work everyone! (Or good work market!).

We are hovering above 950k. Could be anytime now depending on the market! It's amazing how fast its done and also how mentally it's been very positive for us even though we are currently spending enough that 1 million isn't enough to retire (we don't really have a specific number in mind yet as we enjoy our jobs and have kids at home so aren't considering retiring soon).

976! Will hopefully get there in the next few months if the stock market does well, however our savings rate is decreasing as we have some house repairs to save for over that time.

From Nov 1st 2019 to Feb 15th 2020 we went from $501k to $601k, simply by savings and stock market growth.. Let the good times roll!

Wow, that's nuts! We're +$80k for the same period. At this point it won't even take average stock market returns for us to reach $1 million by the end of the year. Who knows what it will actually do though...

Around Nov 1st we were sitting at ~ 750k, today (or by EOM with a few checks/tax returns) we are at ~ 850k

This is through an expensive moving process as well. You're still winning though! (Our living expenses actually grew quite a bit by moving, but it fits our post-FIRE lifestyle better, so I assume you will pull away over time! Good Luck!)

If only we could do this every 3 months ha!

We're around $890k now. Crazy growth. Our expenses have gone up a bit due to vehicles but it's hard to notice in this market.

Haha, yeah, if only we could guarantee +10% from the S&P 500 per quarter!

Market growth is kind to us sometimes.

What the market giveth, it can taketh.

Which is why we're still investing $3k+ a month :-)

You inspired me to make a spreadsheet for when we will hit $1 million (net worth) given possible market performance. We're investing $6k/month plus and reducing debt by about $2.3k/month. Currently at $885k net worth with $737k invested.

20% returns: 6 months
10% returns: 9 months
6% returns: 12 months
3% returns: 15 months
0.5% returns: 18 months
-0.9% returns: 21 months
-2% returns: 24 months
-3% returns: 28 months
-4% returns: 34 months
-5% returns: 42 months
-6% returns: 55 months
-7% returns: 82 months (this return over this length of period has happened only once, I believe)
-8% returns: 165 months (this has never happened)
-9% returns: Never

So best case scenario we'll finish this race in a matter of months and worst case it will be almost 7 years. That's quite a possible gap! Better than 90% chance it will be under 3 years though.
