A larger than expected bonus and the bounceback in the stock market gave us an insane lift over last quarter. It's crazy that $1M is in sight, but it's all at the whims of the market as to when it happens at this point.

3/2019 - $925K - $281K in home equity, $21K in cash, remainder in investments. We crossed $600K in investments for the first time this quarter!
12/2018 - $803K
9/2018 - $850K
6/2018 - $799K
3/2018 - $756K
12/2017 - $719K
9/2017 - $670K
6/2017 - $630K

01/01/17 £374668
01/01/18 £497097
01/01/19 £547415
01/02/19 £561491
01/03/19 £568388
01/03/19 £572881

Another slow month, I seem to be saying that at the end of each month recently!

At this rate it will take another 5 years to hit my goal (850k) which is, frankly, not cricket!

What are you invested in? You should have gained like £70k in the last quarter just from investments alone.

Graduated from the other thread sometime earlier this year but I don't check this every month..

August 2016: $280k
November 2017: $380k
July 2018: $490k
April 2019: $541k

I'm hoping to reach one million before my 30th birthday which would be a little under 4 years from now.  I'll really need some market help for that..

That's my TNW.
Break down is roughly:
£300k property
£300k investments

The ivnestments are a split between SIPP whcih is managed by an IFA and the rest is in VLS and thats been up and down.

The picture is slightly muddy as my NW has not changed but I paid my mortgage off (£200k) so I have moved a lot of my invested cash into property since Feb as the split was more like £100k property and £500k investments so it will take a few months to settle.

We have done this to secure our future in the hope that it will allow us to FIRE even if there is a recession.

Hi All,

Graduated from the 250-500k club back in June 18 but waited a while to join this one until it seemed like it would stick. Look forward to seeing how I do on this race - alot of the previous gains came about from getting married and combining assets.
Assets include primary residence, rental property, and investment portfolio. Liabilities are two mortgages.

                        Assets   Liabilities   Net Worth
July 2018            $939k        -$433k         $505k
August 2018        $956k        -$431k         $525k
September 2018  $975k        -$435k         $539k
October 2018       $953k        -$435k        $518k
November 2018    $962k        -$429k        $533k
December 2018    $962k        -$427k        $534k
January  2019      $977k        -$425k        $552k
February 2019      $1004k      -$428k        $576k
March 2019          $1024k      -$424k        $600k

It's crazy to see how fast the numbers jump up the bigger the numbers are.  It's like we all start kinda slow, inching toward the next number and then all of the sudden BIG numbers.  (Yes, I am easily amused.)

Woot woot! I'm in the club!

Apr 2019: $523,606

Psychologically, this feels like the biggest threshold to me since achieving net worth zero in 2015.

I have been chasing the $1M liquid asset milestone for quite some time now. I was so close last year and then the market tanked. I am now so close again I can taste it. Sitting at $990K liquid. Not sure why I want this one so badly, it really is only a symbolic thing, but somehow it seems so big to me.

I don't belong to this thread yet, but have been creepily lurking. I hear people saying 500k is the milestone after which you start to see crazy gains, can anyone comment on their experience with this?

Yes it's true -- big gains but also some big dips if you're invested in stocks heavily.  Once the stash gets into this range you can start to see monthly ups and downs in the $40- $60k range. Have to take your dramamine for this ride haha, but the trend is upward so it's all good.

Well, it's all a continuum based upon your perception and engagement.  Unless your perception changes, you shouldn't expect any big difference between $450k and $500k.  Likely it's influenced by your income, savings rate, or really your wealth as a certain multiple of your income.  If you earn $75k and save $35k per year, the daily/weekly/monthly swings and compounding on a $500k stash likely seem enormous.  Less so if you earn $350k, saving $200k.

Personally, I never felt like a particular milestone made the stash earnings seem bigger.  It was more of a backward-looking realization: "Huh, I used to get all excited when I'd break a new $25k milestone; now I will go back and forth over those numbers several times with little more than a shrug."

 i dont update my shares total very often.
so when i see the numbers on my dashboard i know they're not correct, which keeps me from worrying about it.
i also try to stay away from bloomberg or stuff that is watching ups and downs too closely

Joining the group.  I thought wife and I combined cleared $1M total a couple months ago, which was a jaw dropper for both of us.  That included the equity of rental property and our primary residence.  Since then, I dropped those numbers 6% for selling costs, to give a more realistic idea of equity.  Also dropped value on primary 6% based on a comp across the street.  Both values are intentionally conservative.  We bought well during the recession and values have skyrocketed since purchase, so equity is a large part of my equation.  After making those changes, wife and I combined dropped back below $1M.

So I figure I'll pick up here, personally.

4/1/19 $236k LNW / $756 TNW

The gains are big, but not really noticeable. Our net worth can go up or down by several thousand each day, but when you have several hundred thousand, a few thousand is not that big of a deal. And at this point of time, increases in net worth are still mostly due to saving our incomes.

$500,000 to $800,000 was kind of an eye blink for me. It included a job change and a move, and that crazy bull market in 2013-2014. I had literally gone a year without logging into mint.com.

I don't know if I'd say I see "crazy gains," but there's no question that the portfolio is doing more of the heavy lifting for you as your stash continues to grow.  Meaning this: say you have $100,000, and you add another $100,000 to get to $200,000 in one year.  A year is not a lot of time for compounding to occur, so nearly all of that growth is going to have to come from you adding new money in some way.  If you assume you get a 7% annual return on your $100,000, then only $7000 of that growth comes from the portfolio, and you have to put in $93,000.  Whereas, if you have $500,000, and you grow it to $600,000 in one year at that same 7% return, then $35,000 of the growth comes from the portfolio, and you only have to add $65,000 in contributions.

That is obviously a simplistic description of what happens, since your portfolio doesn't grow at a constant rate (and, as pointed out by some other posters, may even decrease in some years).  But there's no question that the growth becomes self-sustaining over time, and eventually you can reach a point where you don't have to contribute any new money and it keeps growing at the same rate - or even faster - than the rate it was growing when you didn't have much money saved yet and nearly all of the growth came from new contributions made by you.

Congrats @sisto!!!

I just crossed over for LNW as well (though sticking around this thread for my retirement accounts only).  Come on over to the $1M to $2M thread.  It'll be nice to have some "newbie" company!

Thank you! I am already over on the other thread too in the NW category. Been over there a while, for some reason this one was more important to me. Especially since I will likely be keeping my house. I suppose it's time to go hob nob over in the other thread more now. LOL

@sisto , congratulations!

My first post on this forum was about a month ago in this thread. We were at ~$943K and I typically calculated net worth every few months. However, if I eyeball things we grew to at least $955K. I think we are tracking to hit the $1M in NW by October of this year.

Psychologically, this is great, but lots of equity in home means I won't stop working till we hit at least $1.8M in NW.

@sisto , congratulations!

Yes, I totally agree. When I hit it with NW it wasn't nearly as satisfying as getting it liquid. So you are pretty close then, that's great. I am also close. I have been shooting for $1.25M and have a planned date for rule of 75 at work. June 7, 2021.

what is everyone using for this number?

investments only?

investment + emergency fund?

Total net worth? (investments, cash in savings, checking, emergency fund, property owned (cars, houses etc)

I'm personally only looking at my invested cash, and ignoring property (my home, which I still owe on, and our cars which are paid for), emergency fund savings, and my checking (daily operations money).

You can use whatever you want, but personally at this point I'm only including retirement investments (a subset of LNW).  I'm  excluding our house, kids' college funds, cash, and the emergency fund.

It's fun to track multiple ways -- then you get to cross over the threshold and celebrate multiple times during the journey.

Q4 2018 was a rough time, of course--it was hard to see "dollars" evaporating like that.  But we held our breath and kept plugging away at saving/investing.  The coolest thing to me to see in the numbers above:  we are about to graduate out of this thread in the non-home-equity net worth column.  ;-)

Onward!

I'm posting both my liquid funds (which includes 529 accounts), and my net worth including home equity.  For this particular race, I'm using liquid NW, as I've already passed the mark on actual net worth.  If I wanted to be super conservative, I could also ignore the 529 accounts, but I'm not - it's still our money and we could access it for various purposes if need be.

I use total NW as I post on personal capital, but that number intentionally excludes the 529 accounts and things that I do not view as my net worth.  We do however have current college savings for the kids that we have started to save in the last two years because those are just in our savings right now.  The thought was we are not guaranteeing these funds to them.  We do not view ourselves as obligated to pay for college.  If they do poorly and want to keep tossing money away, for example, rather than figuring out a real life path, we are not obligated to watch our money be wasted, so therefore we feel the money is ours until it is not, and therefore we include in our numbers.

Wow!  We made it!  Took 3.5 years...  After seeing December's drops, I never thought we'd get here this fast...  Will probably dip below again, but we'll just keep adding to the Stache for a few more years.
Our goal is $1.5M minimum... We'll see how we feel when we get there.
Crazy to see the gains and losses...

My update:  At this point for this challenge we are tracking retirement accounts only (excludes house, emergency fund, and 529 accounts).  Managed a gain thanks to Mr.Market, despite being retired now.  That was the plan -- make a little money to cover daily expenses, and let the accounts grow in the background.

Great progress everyone! Congrats to the recent millionaires!

Slow and steady is the way to go, especially for those of us not making six figures. Markets are zooming along again.

Another annual update:
April 2016: $500k -----> saved $54.8k (~75% of income), 90/10 allocation
April 2017: $651k -----> saved $53.4k (~73% income), 60/40 allocation
April 2018: $777k -----> saved $40.5k (~54% income) 80/20 allocation

April 2019: $883k
