I, too, have dabbled in the crypto, my stake is about $270 at this moment's prices.

I've been involved with crypto as well, however am not currently counting it in my FIRE assets.  I'm viewing it as a fun hobby that may expedite my FIRE date, but I am not putting any money into it that I wouldn't put into some other hobby / interest.

When my crypto becomes worth $1,000,000, I will start a separate topic called "Race to $1 million in crypto assets" and boast about how smart I was there.

Actually I sold a lot of my crypto before the big bust. I'm one of those people who has gut feelings about things and I sold it all approximately two days before the downturn as I had a gut feeling it was going to turn for the worst.

I've also made a bit of money from buying things and reselling them on eBay and other similar websites but I haven't included that in my recent update.

For the first time since January 2016, our net worth dropped. I guess that's a good thing because it means our investments have grown enough to minimize the impact of our monthly contributions.

+$35k this year! Aiming, for 100k in any given year of savings. Though, I am really only tracking worth gains, not savings directly. (So it includes gains/losses in the market) Given 10 month(s) left, and 65k more to go, I should hit this goal!

NOTE: Not too bad given this month. Two things helped, income is very high right now, and I did end up with a few grand in a tax return. I feel pretty good being up 11k when I see some here posting losses! (I am 100% vtsax right now)

Bumpy month!  Still up since the first of the year though.  Here's our update, including only investments (not house equity or 529 accounts):

               Invested (+/-)
5/1/17 --    $631k
6/1/17 --    $647k (+$16k)
7/1/17 --    $655k (+$8k)
8/1/17 --    $665k (+$10k)

                   Invested/Overall NW
End of 2012: 170k / 200k  *(re)married
End of 2013: 295k / 342k
End of 2014: 338k / 388k
End of 2015: 366k / 428k *June - husband quit work to go back to college full-time
End of 2016: 432k / 545k
End of 2017: 532k / 664k [+83k college funds] * Sep - husband started working part-time; still going to college

end of Jan 2018:  553k / 686k  [+85k college funds]
end of Feb 2018: 545k / 679k   [+86k college funds]

I think we've saved enough in eldest kid's college fund.  We're 85% to our goal for her, and she's got 6 years left before she heads off to college.  Since the younger two didn't get to take advantage of the 2008 recession, we're debating whether to divide eldest kid's annual college contribution between them or put it in our brokerage account.

Updating

April 2016: $500k -----> saved $54.8k (~75% of income), 90/10 allocation
April 2017: $651k

Gain of $23k this past month alone. These insane market returns cannot continue.

Checking in again at $711k. I keep waiting for the crash.

$785k as of this morning.

I'm glad I ran these numbers this morning before the drop today.  Maybe by next month's update, things will have rebounded.

                 LNW      TNW
Jan 2018 - 846K  /  987K
Feb 2018 - 880K /  1.02M
Mar 2018 - 859K /  1.00M

A real squeaker for that TNW number this morning.  I was afraid I'd have to turn in my smoking jacket.

In the spirit of the new year, I thought I'd change up my updates to give me more of a historical snapshot and monitor my year over year increase as well.  Tracking my liquid investments only and looking to close the gap on $1MM this year with a stretch goal to actually reach it if all goes well!

Most accounts took a bit of a hit, but those with active contributions are buying more shares per dollar contributed so not concerned.  It still wasn't fun to see the first decrease since late 2016 but still on track for my goals and chugging along.

Dec-17$796K$1,058K
Jan-18$836K$1,095K
Feb-18$823K$1,087K

We paid the last of our installments ($7K) for the home renovations, and now will start saving for the next round (finishing the basement).  I upped the value of our home in our net worth calculations by a few thousand to account for the completion of the renovations.

The wild swings in the market affected the numbers, of course, but not horribly so.  Looks like we're off to another bumpy start here in March with the announcement of the increase in tariffs on aluminum and steel; should be fascinating to watch how that plays out.

Onward!

(posting also in the $1M to $2M thread for net worth)

I got behind on tracking end of month numbers. First decline in a while, but not by too much. In mid-Feb I briefly went below 800k but it's (mostly) recovered at this point it seems. I am definitely at the point where I feel like I have (almost) no control over my NW. Which is both good and bad.

February 2018: 827k
January 2018: 831k

+162k this year! Pretty awesome bump and definitely more than my salary. Have some significant planned medical expenses next month that will put a ~5k dent in that, but I'll enjoy the number for now. :)

December 2017: 812k
November 2017: 799k
October 2017: 790k
September 2017: 776k
August 2017: 752k
July 2017: 751k
June 2017: 737k
May 2017: 732k
April 2017: 720k
March 2017: 711k
February 2017: 703k
January 2017: 680k
December 2016: 650k
December 2015: 487k
December 2014: 412k
December 2013: 350k

Dec. 2017: $502k
Jan. 2, 2018: $513.7k
Feb. 5, 2018: $539.9k

Mar. 5, 2018: $543.6k

Super high savings month for us which is the only reason we didn't slide backwards for us. Our investment accounts are down 2k net, we dumped in close to $9k between all of them this month, our rentals are also proving to be a good diversification tool since we cashflowed $2k last month. I get a bonus this month too so April will reflect higher than average savings as well - I won't mind if the market drops so I can buy some more index funds on sale with my bonus :)

It looks like most people were able to offset the February market losses with current contributions, leaving the effect relatively "flat."

Right? That's pretty awesome to not feel a down ~3% month. Plus we all got a chance to buy some discounted funds this past month :)

Latest update below. Close to doubling net worth inside 2 years! I am including our home equity in this and have accounted for a small increase in home value, but nothing like the ridiculousness I see on Zillow.

Mar 2018 - $607k
Feb 2018 - $590k
Jan 2018 - $580k
Dec 2017 - $569k
Nov 2017 - $561k
Oct 2017 - $546k
Sep 2017 - $538k
Aug 2017 - $497k
July 2017 - $483k
Jun 2017 - $479k
May 2017 - $454k
Apr 2017 - $448k
Mar 2017 - $435k
Feb 2017 - $433k
Jan 2017 - $410k
Oct 2016 - $370k
Sep 2016 - $330k

I'll play!

cash+rental equity       add primary residence equity
1/2016      $507K                              $627K
1/2017      $625K                              $797K

9/2017      $784K                              $904K

1MM dates- very likely sooner.
                3/2021                     12/2018

12/2017    $762K                  $903K  - remodeling primary residence! When project is done, big increase in equity!

3/2018     $725K             $866K - still remodeling. Framing and all exterior done, all bills paid! (to contractors)
But I'm not going to increase the equity number here until the project is done on the inside, too.

Congrats!

We're just jumping over from the race to 500k thread. Just checked our accounts today and are sitting at around $527K net worth.

Checking in at $554K. +27K in ~2 months. Not too shabby.

Net worth is increasing so quickly it’s making me dizzy. Net worth is currently at $666K. Over $100K in three months.

The first $500K felt like it crawled up at the pace of a snail. Now, I’m shocked every time I update our net worth statement every month.

Taking a major hit this month so far.

About £5k in unexpected expenses, from car service / tyres to a custom made item I ordered many months ago suddenly its ready and needs paying for.

On top of that the markets really not helping matters!

Reckon I am about £10k down this week alone.  Ouch.

We can hear crickets in this thread after the past week :D

I got accustomed to great returns in 2017 but time to get back to reality. Still a few more years at work. Just hoping for no 50%+ recession.

Yeah, I am just trying not to look, haha.  Looks like my April 1 checkin is going to be ugly.  I'm FIREing early next year, but was not planning on touching the stash for a while, so that'll probably be ok.  If you've got a few years to go before you need the money you'll be fine.

Taxable investment accounts dropped by more than my monthly salary. I kind of hope it continues dropping until I get my paycheque this month and can buy more ETFs. I’m not planning to RE anytime soon though — I like my work, so I’m kind of SWAMI right now, so the dip doesn’t really bother me. I only discovered MMM about two years ago, and at the time I never thought I’d ever be one of those people whose investment movements are greater than monthly salary, so this is kind of exciting for me.

Dips allow me to get to $1 million faster. I’m also waiting for a dip in our local real estate market. I really want another rental property.

We're down roughly $30k in the last week and back under $600k for the 3rd or 4th time. Looks like we could end the month in the red again.

I haven't been paying as much attention to my money lately, work has been too busy. I finally had enough breathing room today to distract myself with a financial review. We're currently sitting at about $350k invested and about $400k in home equity, but I'm not feeling good at all. With the craziness of work lately the desire to FIRE is intensifying, but when I tallied up my savings rate, it's not nearly as good as it needs to be. I'm sitting around 40% with lots of face punch worthy discretionary spending. Food and random shit I buy on Amazon has creeped up over the last year or two and really become a problem. I need to refocus my efforts!

I discovered that mint.com was actually tracking my car loan as a positive balance, not a negative, meaning that I was over-reporting my networth by $16-$18 K. I'm still in the double-comma, but I apologize to everyone on this thread who was actually above me. Hang in there in this bear market, guys!

Since yesterday was the last banking day of March, herewith the monthly numbers:

                 LNW      TNW
Jan 2018 - 846K  /  987K
Feb 2018 - 880K /  1.02M
Mar 2018 - 859K /  1.00M
Apr 2018 - 855K /   996K   Booooo!   : (

I feel like the character Russ Hanneman from Silicon Valley when he lost his 3rd comma.  Now I really get that character.  He's much more sympathetic.

I'm (mostly) kidding of course.   How could I really complain?  I'm still up on the year so far.  I had to check to see where that $9K increase comes from and it's almost all my cash balance in my checking account.  Investment accounts are just treading water with the additions covering the losses so far.

I changed my cash hoarding ways last year so this is an anomaly but I do have to write a check to Uncle Sam in a couple of weeks and pay some LLC renewal fees, etc.  I'll get most of the remainder invested by end of April, I think.

I think we can expect a bumpy ride for the next little while.  Hope everyone else's numbers are still in the black for the year!

31 Jan 18 - $603,902.29
28 Feb 18 - $593,932.00
30 Mar 18 - $588,668.87

This despite averaging over $3,500 in contributions every month. The high was $611 on 26 January, so all told over $33k drop. I tell myself that means this month's contributions will be more valuable long term. sigh.

End of March clocking in at 839k. With 3 paychecks, and a tax return of around 1.5 pay checks, I was excited to reach 850k this month. But the market had other plans. Womp womp. My total assets are still a tad above 1MM which is pretty cool - though I think my home value is a bit inflated at the moment.

February 2018: 827k
January 2018: 831k
December 2017: 812k
December 2016: 650k
December 2015: 487k
December 2014: 412k
December 2013: 350k

Mostly in a holding pattern right now, not decreasing but not really increasing either. At least it gives us an opportunity to buy some more stocks for cheap(er)...We're still ~$40k above where we stood on December 31, 2017, so it's certainly not all bad.
