Quite the bump due to two big end-of-year windfalls. With a new job with a 25% raise, i might be able to reach lean FIRE in 3-5 years.

Goals for 2020: Max out all pre-tax retirement (401k, HSA, and tIRA) and hit an overall 60% savings rate.

Investments/Net Worth
Q3 2018: $175k/$291k
Q4 2018: $162k/$280k
Q1 2019: $185k/$313k
Q2 2019: $199k/$331k
Q3 2019: $210k/$344k
Q4 2019: $283k/$448k

Looking at potentially buying my first investment property next week.  It is commercial and not residential, but entry level.  Mostly I am looking to pull some money out of the market to diversify and insulate against [pick your reason here].

I don't expect much come next month for some annual expenses I have to pay out, but when 80% of NW is in the market things are starting to get out of my hands on growth/loss.

The way I look at mine that would be the opposite of diversifying and scare me depending on how much of my NW I'm pulling out. If your investments are diverse (geographically and market) wouldn't the prudent diversification be to an REIT or similar?

First number is retirement savings, second is total NW including cash emergency savings and real estate equity.

September 2019: $261,238 (total NW $387,863)
October 2019: $260,934 (total NW $381,797)
November 2019: $280,569 (total NW $405,660)
December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423, 991)
January 2020: $299,351 (total NW $430,390)

+$6703 for the month. Made my first small investment in real estate, looking to add more in either Q1 or Q2. Not a bad start to the roaring 2020s :)

Hi everyone,

I am a recent graduate of the $100k-250k thread. I'm expecting to be in this thread for about three years, though who knows what the markets will do in that time! Goals for 2020: save some cash for a surgery I will probably undergo mid-year, max tax-differed accounts, try not to rage-quit my job

Net worth Jan 2020: 266,486

If I hadn't bought a house and had the ensuing costs / fixes / etc I'd likely have had a $100k+ delta, but I'm much happier with my living situation so I shouldn't complain :)

Calculating net worth is weird now -- I'm ignoring cars entirely (I have one financed for about what it's worth, and two free & clear) and also ignoring my solar system's loan and corresponding value (it's providing ~$400/mo to offset a ~$335/mo payment) and also a state-subsidized energy efficiency loan (0% for 10 years) for ~10k ($116/mo).  It's not really an accurate number, but given that I've put ~$60k into the house and kept the house value the same for my calculation I hope it's close enough to be reasonably realistic.

Borrowing this format from @ASW, @dogboyslim. @Jaayse, et al. It's a nice way to see growth since beginning of tracking.

Investments only as always. We've had several spendy months in a row (mostly unexpected, unplanned for things) So far I haven't had to lessen our scheduled investments (401K/403B/HSAs/IRAs) that come out our payroll directly. I think if we can weather this last one we should be in the clear. Once we get our WTF savings built back up a bit, hopefully we can start funneling some of the money we have been using to cash flow our spending into investments as well. We're already maxing the the above, but I had hoped to start a taxable account last fall. No such luck.

This month was great for gains and I've started investing through my corporation as all tax-advantaged accounts are full.

This makes it pretty clear MMM changed my life when I found it in early 2017, I can honestly say I haven't noticed my lifestyle constricting and I am happier than before, even ignoring savings.

Put an offer on the commercial property but the seller pulled the listing.  I think they were just looking for an offer to establish market value for a refinance, which is fine, but disappointing.

Working up a proposal to get my employer to sign off on a Simple IRA to get some tax advantaged savings since they pulled the 401k from our benefits.

Aside from that, just trying to survive until nanny costs are gone.  Sadly my savings rate has plummeted as of late.

Gonna throw my hat into the ring on this thread. It's crazy to go back and see the progress over the years. I came out of grad school in 2010 with $90k in student debt, without a pot to piss in, earning $40k a year. Four years ago this month, I was celebrating a zero net worth after a long period of focusing on attacking the loans. At that time, I decided to refocus my efforts on saving and investing more and to not go as crazy on the loans. Just last week, my personal investment accounts crossed the $250k mark for the first time. And this week, I will be making my final student loan payment. It feels great!

It's a little surreal for me getting to this point. I'm in the camp where it has felt like a big deal. Both of these goals, paying off the student loans and hitting $250k in investments, have been on my mind for so long and now both have been achieved... at practically the same time. I do feel different-- "rich" in the sense that my financial anxieties already seemed to have lessened. I don't feel prisoner to any debt and I have confidence in my nest egg. Now, in my 34th year, my traditional retirement (e.g. 65+) is already taken care of and all efforts moving forward will continue to shave off the years until true financial independence. (Now I know everyone uses their own form of accounting; I'll be following based on my personal investments/retirement accounts--separate from the wife's).

Checking in about 15 months after hitting $250k. Just this week I eclipsed $312,500.00 for the first time. This was a cool number for me, because I love to extrapolate the growth potential of what has been already been amassed... In 10 years, it should be worth appx $625k; in 20 years, it should be $1.25m; and in 30 years, at age 65, it would grow to be worth $2.5m (inflation adjusted)! Although, there is no way I am working that long though. Lol. Will be drawing well before then, but the security feels really good... Okay, back to plodding along in the race. Good luck everyone!

Took less than 3 months after hitting $312.5k to reach 1/3 of a million. Surpassed $333,333.33 for the first time today. Hoping to keep the momentum rolling!

Chugging along nicely here. Still using the same accounting. Surpassed $400k in investments for the first time today! Just a matter of time to crush $500k... Keep at it everyone.

I turned to my wife the other day as I was updating spreadsheet in bed and told her that we were now worth half a million bucks, and I'm not even factoring in her investments or bank accounts. She laughed at me as she thought I was joking. Our financial plan and objectives are in line but our actual accounts are very much separate still. FI still seems so far away but it also keeps going quicker :D

Hard to believe my most recent post on this thread is from November, 2017.

Looks like I crossed over $500k of retirement savings at the beginning of the year. I have tax returns due this spring that and will probably wait until then to switch to the next challenge just to be sure.

In April, 2017 I commented in this thread that I would love to be at $500k in 2 years. It actually took me 2 years, 8 months. Lots of changes in the last two years including moving, changing jobs and all of my kids starting university. Hard to keep a consistent saving rate with that much change, and very pleased with the accomplishment.

Congratulations to everybody entering and leaving the thread!

Hi!

New to the forum but would like to join this topic. About me; mom of two, somewhere between 40 and 50 yo, married to mr B, new to the FIRE concept (unfortunately but better late than never). Stated NW is just for me since we keep financials partly separate and partly combined (mr B is not fully on board yet).

Hello

I just checked my net worth and it is over 500k! I was inspired to stop lurking and join these race threads.
A  chunk of that number is equity though, so I decided to join in this thread instead. This way the race to 1M thread will also be the race to FI.
The 2020 goal is to hit 400k liquid by the end of the year.

I've held off seriously tracking my net worth until I knew I was close to one of the milestones.  I know part of it is the market's movements, but it's still surreal how much of an increase there is from month to month.

At the risk of getting kicked out of the thread I'm posting my usual payday numbers and sticking to my 2020 investment plan. Trying to keep a 'stocks on sale' mindset as my automatic contributions go through.

Investments only; household combined.

07/31/19 - $330,406
08/31/19 - $437,870 (large windfall + quarterly rrsp invest)
09/30/19 - $443,081
10/31/19 - $452,295
11/30/19 - $483,711(incl quarterly rrsp invest)
12/31/19 - $484,963

01/31/20 - $496,255
02/28/20 - $472,573 (incl quarterly rrsp invest ... I'd be at $463+/- without it)

Ugly end to the Month.  I wouldn't mind things staying low for a bit as we're expecting a large tax refund which is destined for our TFSA.

What a bang for the end of the month eh?

Luckily my 2019 employer match hit my 401k at the most recent Top, before immediately losing, what, 15% now? Shored up the month end number a bit at least. Just to keep it fun, we also owed Uncle Sam $4.5k this month.

Of course we took a beating in the market like everyone else - but sold some bonds, bought some stock this morning (~1.5% of NW), and set up my automatic purchases today to a 95/5 ratio instead of the usual 85/15 ratio. Also transferred some cash from the emergency fund to my brokerage to make another purchase Monday (another ~2% of NW). Emergency fund has been a bit bloated lately as we have been contemplating a rental purchase. Also contacted HR and doubled my 401k contribution, which will front load the 401k a bit and cause a manageable deficit in my budget. Will continue selling bonds / trading cash for stocks each time the market passes a new miles stone (-20%, -25%, -30%, etc.).

Even if the market does not continue to drop, hoping it will at least hang out at these levels for a few months, but that seems unlikely.

NW = 253k (loss of 1.8k this month) not including our house. Just barely stayed in the thread!

This was our second negative month since I started tracking, other was October 2018, a loss of $20.

Invested: $270922 (+~7k)
Total net worth: $495000

Ended month on a down day but that's just a blip on the chart soon.

Pleased to have stayed in this thread with $260287 liquid. I had already decided to start maximizing my 401k early so that came in handy. excited to see what will happen when the market starts recovering.
