Taxable Investments only

Our Emergency savings cash stash got a little too big, so we transferred some of it to investments.  Strong returns on the month also helped.  This felt like a good month for progress!

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are building a house.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search.Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.
May-19 $326000 - INV $416000 - NW ---> Yay! Volatility. I was able to add few hundred $s more than usual to investments. @Epor Usually about $6000 a month in addition to savings currently, rest gains or losses in market. It motivates me to compare with high savers, that way I tend to push a little harder or keep consistent. Its a race alright!
Jun-19 $348000 - INV $439000 - NW ---> DW's pregnant with our second baby :), That means now I have to plan for big expenses.. Minivan, Medical expense and more. I am trying convince DW that we can put off buying minivan for another 2 years. Wish me luck!
Jul-19 $355000 - INV $546000 - NW ---> Construction on real estate we were building completed, so added its value back into Net worth.
Aug-19 $349000 - INV ---> Medical expenses and vacation made us go back wards. Market didn't help, but I am happy its flat or down.
Sep-19 $362000 - INV ---> Slow and steady. We are half way through our pregnancy, Just about 4 more months to go!! Its so hard to resist various temptations to spend. minivan, finish basement, build a sunroom. Desires are endless.
Oct-19 $362000 - INV ---> No change, nada.  Spent over $15000 on paying off taxes, credit cards, couple of mortgage payments ahead, medical, travel for next year, daycare for rest of the year. Looks like my journey with you wonderful folks will be longer than I expected. Whew! no end in sight as I see us moving towards big purchases soon, that MINIVAN.
Nov-19 $350000 - INV ---> Our backwards slide continues, with a new loan for car. I project about 18 months more to get to the goal.

Congrats to all the new grads!!

$377,368. Up $7,307 m/m, and $94,829 y/y. Nice to have help from the market as I transition to PT at work. Dec and Jan are going to be trickier. Just dropped $3000 on a headstone for my dad, and am going to make the ole apartment a bit more livable.

9/2017  $244K  (cash out refinance of primary residence)
3/2018   $208K  includes 0% credit card debt.
6/2018  $213K    ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $328K.
12/2018   $250K   ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $353K

conservative projections:
12/2020  $400K
 6/2022   $500K

12/2019  $328K  but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $425K
How are you playing the 0% cc game? Is it saving you some interest cost at least? Seems like a big headache

Aug-19: $204485 invested + $250k equity = $454k

Sep-19: $204404 invested + $250k equity = $454k so ultimately a flat month.

Should see a decent bump in equity come Sept though, bonus will go towards our 2nd mortgage.

There is a chance we are moving continents soon and would rent the house out at that point so opted not to invest bonus into debt paydown and keep it invested/more liquid.

Oct-19: $225122 invested + $250k equity = $475k

Nov-19: $239478 invested plus $225k equity is about $465k.

Decided to reduce my equity a bit since realtor fees would be higher than I had anticipated. Home value has been flat for 6 months now. Any move abroad won't happen until at the earliest next summer.

Target graduation date is tough to say but perhaps around end of March 2020 since it's mostly going to be dependent on investments rather than equity.

$249k invested + $225k equity ~ $475k. Great month overall! Can't wait for Jan 1st when the 401k matching kicks in again.

Yes, it's saving us a lot of interest.

We put an addition on our house and paid for contractors and materials with 0% cards along the way. At max, we had over 60K at 0%.  It's just two years since the start now, so these cards promo rates are expiring in the next couple of months. The last few (~15K) that we can't pay off will go to a 1% card from a local bank (no transfer fee) for 2020, then we should be able to be all paid off. We have a 1.99% promo rate on our HELOC, but the 1% card beats that and should cover what we need to pay everything off. We still have a little under $7K left from the proceeds of the rental sale, it may as well earn interest for a couple of  months as long as the 0% cards are still 0%. As long as we still get offers for 0%, we take them and use them for our daily spending.

All the 0% we ever did are from new purchases, not balance transfers (unless there was no transfer fee).

We pay the minimum each month for all.  We have 21 cards that have been in the rotation at one point or another. I have a pretty simple spreadsheet to keep track of it all.

May 2017: CHF 231'000
June 2017: CHF 235'000

As I paid CHF 2'700 in taxes and the mortgage (CHF 1'380) for the last three months was due I'm satisfied.

July 2017: CHF 243'000 (that was a good month)
August 2017: CHF 247000
September 2017: CHF 256000

I can start the next race.

We are now at CHF 380000.

Giving credit where it is due, I got this format from @ASW in the 100-250k thread.  I do like it a lot, helps clean things up.

5/1/19 - $287,799 // $169,570

11/1/19 - $335,150 // $197,615

12/1/19 - $340,787 // $208,029

Hawaii, mostly on points, was still a nice chunk of change.  But kept all my regular investments and the market had an outstanding month.

07/2017 - $147,452 (Savings Ratio 39.1%)
10/2017 - $162,673 (Savings Ratio 54.9%)
01/2018 - $193,174 (Savings Ratio 63.3%)
02/2018 - $207,459 (Savings Ratio 67.7%)
05/2018 - $202,142 (Savings Ratio 27.54%)
02/2019 - $215,000 (Savings Ratio 63.0%)
04/2019 - $221,150 (Savings Ratio 9%)
07/2019 - $238,090 (Savings Ratio 31.75%)
12/2019 - $260,452 (Savings Ratio Unknown, likely around 30%)

Finally into this thread. Could probably have been here in the middle of 2019 but lots of life changes cost me a lot of money. But I think I'm safely into this race. If I can keep life predictable (unlikely) then I could see graduating this thread in mid 2022.

Investments only
May: $251,222
June: $380,473 <-- combined accounts with DH
July: $423,417
Aug: $436, 413
Sep: $428,402
Oct: $434,691
Nov: $453,570
Dec: $470,545

Getting so close. Got a raise so contributions should go up next year, but not until after tax time. We're setting aside a huge chunk since we have no idea how big our first married filing jointly penalty will be.

Summary of accounts:

Date      Bank Accounts      Taxable Investments      IRAs and 401k      TOTAL      CHANGE
   September 1, 2019      $34,060.56      $107,178.92      $100,816.28      $242,055.76      -1.70%

   December 1, 2019      $48,713.45      $122,014.49      $109,478.12      $280,206.06      +4.60%

Another very good month.  Hopefully I can hold at $280k+ to end off 2019.

Hawaii, mostly on points, was still a nice chunk of change.

Which island and when?  I just got back from a trip (honeymoon technically I guess) to Hawaii myself.  All points except for food/activities there (~$1k).  I was fortunate to get in on a Rakuten error posting of 15% back at giftcards.com (+$750 from that one) so that essentially wiped out the majority of my spend in Hawaii.  We were in Maui over Thanksgiving basically.

1/1/2019   $417,324.32
2/1/2019   $424,732.09
3/1/2019   $431,780.98
4/1/2019   $442,293.06
5/1/2019   $449,638.91
6/1/2019   $437,156.52
7/1/2019   $444,733.12
8/1/2019   $453,785.05
9/1/2019   $464,489.99
10/1/2019   $469,849.31
11/1/2019   $479,049.55
12/1/2019   $498,129.57

Looks like I'll be graduating from here next month *knocks on wood* but January tuition payment will probably keep me here for a couple more months. It's really weird but due to an accident, insurance paid me out a lot more than my old car was worth in November. Was able to get into a used EV for a great price, and hopefully reduced future costs by going EV. Extrapolating one month of energy, electric will cost me about $250/year vs $1,500 in gas in my old vehicle.

Congrats! I sold my Corvette last month and just put a deposit down on an EV today too -- hoping to have dramatically reduced transportation costs in my future.

Hi! I'm new here. My husband and I (married in 2004) started reading about the FIRE movement around four years ago, but we only recently turned into frugal badasses. We made some major life changes this year to help us cross the $500K threshold.

Year     Liquid Assets    Net Worth    Note
2004    -$7K                same           started marriage with $17K in student loans from undergrad
2005    $11K                same
2006    $33K                same
2007    $62K                same
2008    $58K                same           recession!! Also bought used car with $10K in cash
2009    $102K              same           paid off student loans!!!
2010    $146K              same
2011    $187K              same
2012    $205K              $266K          bought our first home for $176.5K; put down $50K
2013    $186K              $362K          paid off our mortgage. If I had a time machine I'd do things differently.
2014    $227K              $420K
2015    $242K              $431K          adopted our daughter; minor surgery for her
2016    $244K              $473K          adopted our son; major surgery for him
2017    $393K              $622K          minor surgery for our son
2018    $437K              $742K          major surgery for our son
2019    $729K              $891K          major downsize/lifestyle change; major emergency surgery for our son

The last four years of parenthood and medical issues shifted our priorities and helped us realize how precious and fragile life is and how much we value our time together. We shifted things into high gear this year by downsizing from our 2200sf 3bed/2bath home far out in the burbs to a 1350sf 2bed/2bath townhome literally out a metro stop. We downsized from 2 cars to 1 car, and we walk or take the train as much as possible. My husband took advantage of his company's benefits including a 30% gross salary deferral, with 50% of the remainder contributed to his 401K. Over the course of the year we have made many other cuts. I have been a full time SAHM mom, but I am hoping to return to work teaching college statistics next year. At this rate, we hope to catch FIRE in two more years.

Congrats, fireseeker, on shifting your priorities and taking big steps forward to FIRE!

I just joined the forum and am jumping into this race. $466k liquid NW on Mint at the moment - 158k in a HYSA and the rest in investments (about 50/50 taxable/tax advantaged). I’m finally adding to my vanguard funds again after feeling too nervous about P/E ratios and the inverted yield curve to put more into the market for a while there (at least I didn’t take any out!), but reading on here has me feeling better that even if there’s a huge correction, as long as I just leave it in VTSAX and VTIAX the market will pick up again eventually. I know the cash cushion is high but at 1.8% APR at least it stays basically flat to inflation and it’s deep enough to keep me from getting scared and pulling the rest out of the market.

Good luck, fellow racers!

Joining this thread to try to hit 500k by the end of 2020.  We hit 300k in early 2019 and just cracked 400k this month, pretty crazy what the market can do.

Milestones so far:

Hit zero net worth (counting student loans): August 2014
Paid off student loans: November 2015
Hit 100k in investments: March 2016
Hit 200k in investments: August 2017
Hit 300k in investments: January 2019
Hit 400k in investments: December 2019

Just for fun, I track how many days it takes for each 100k, and how much that is in $/day.

0-100k: 1055 days, $94/day
100-200k: 560 days, $178/day
200-300k: 555 days, $180/day
300-400k: 329 days, $304/day

I don't count home equity because I don't really want to try to estimate every month what our home value would be, but I'm guessing we have around 100k, minus fees that we'd pay for selling.  We plan to stay here for the school district, so wouldn't be selling for about 20 years anyway.

If I can keep credit card and bank bonuses going strong (>$10,000 this year) then I may start a taxable account in 2020.  We'll see.

Jan 1 2019:  $272,446.08
Feb 1 2019:  $289,664.17
March 1 2019:  $299,054.26
April 1 2019:  $305,610.01

May 1 2019:  $315,936.05
June 1 2019:  $311,464.06
July 1 2019:  $320,434.22

November 1 2019:  $348,058.86
December 1 2019:  $361,978.66

I got a big raise this year, to use towards buying part of the farm.  That's the main reason behind our sudden upswing in NW this year.  Next year will significantly slow down as we start paying $20,000 a year in interest payments.

I have read before that reaching 333k takes about half the time as 0 to $1M so perhaps that could be an indication. There are so many questions being asked about the returns of the next decade but i am still using slightly lowered projections vs historical averages simply because the latest 10 years were so great.

How long did it take to reach 333k?

Ah I wish it was that easy to figure out- but we only ramped up when we became Mustachians, so the first 333 took a lonnng time.
