Welp that was an interesting month, and not just cause I didn't expect to go up in the number...  Something about trip to china and the fact that I probably spent a few dollars more then I should have.  But hey, that boxed wine must have made the difference!

I would appreciate a little trash talking over the next few months (and maybe years) in this thread. A little trash talking is classy, much like the boxed wine and buying real Froot Loops instead of the generic Fruit Spins or Tootie Fruities.

Trash talking.... hmmm, I suppose  I could do that!  Of course that probably means I need to get another boxed wine.

Hello everyone, very excited to be joining this thread. My numbers include investments, cash and house value as calculated by appraised value at purchase minus outstanding mortgage debt. I don't mess around with zillow estimates because the fluctuations make my head hurt. We are DINK, but I do provide some financial support to my parents. I'll probably be hanging around here for the next 2-4 years, so it will be nice getting to know y'all.

Welcome Marcela! Come on in! You guys seem to be making great progress.

Does anyone else calculate their "12 month net worth gain" as well?

I do, and it's really motivating! Since finding MMM, it's been just about $100k/year for 2017 and 2018. On pace to do more than that this year but as invested assets grow it also becomes more market-dependent.

NW update:
Jan. 2017   $42,000

...

Feb. 2019   $242,032
Mar. 2019   $258,467
Apr. 2019   $271,294

Original goal of $500k by Feb 2023. I am moving the goal up to Aug 2022.

Hey team,

Is there a coat check here? I'll have to keep my ticket handy in case the market goes down on me but hopefully I'll be sticking around here for close to 24 months.

We are expecting our first child in August, so everyone can giggle at how naive the numbers staying close to our current spend are as they feel appropriate. I have a budget created but obviously no experience with children so best laid plans and all that.

I'm an engineer with a consulting company so my job security is low and driven by Canadian politics as much as anything else. The flip side is that compensation is inflated to match so the last two years has been kind to me. These numbers track just myself, my wife is fervently independent and wants it all separated as much as possible. Though I'm sure I will work until I have a FI number high enough for us both before pulling the plug so I can help her out of any sticky job situation if she chooses to later.

   Jul 1, 2016      -$19,048
   Jan 1, 2017      -$25,189     <--Found MMM
   Jan 1, 2018       $110,473
   Jan 1, 2019       $212,860

-25,000 -> 100,000 was done in 10 months
100,000 -> 250,000 was done in 15 months
250,000 -> 500,000 should be done in less than 24 months

   Date (2019)       Liquid NW            Comments
   Jan 1       $212,860
   Feb 1       $230,743
   Mar 1       $244,321
   Apr 1       $252,750           (+8,429)

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Mar 1, 2018 - $225,651
Apr 1, 2018 - $238,764
May 1, 2018 - $251,725
June 1, 2018 - $265,145
July 1, 2018 - $272,423
Aug 1, 2018 - $277,896
Sep 1, 2018 - $298,543
Oct 1, 2018 - $296,603
Nov 1, 2018 - $288,618
Dec 1, 2018 - $304,127
Jan 1, 2019 - $294,621
Feb 1, 2019 - $326,081
Mar 1, 2019 - $354,771
Apr 1, 2019 - $384,308

Good jump of about $30k this month. It was a 3 paycheck month, so my direct income savings was around $25k. The rest was small market growth. Seeing that I’m up almost $90k since Jan 1st is also pretty awesome. About $58k of that was savings, the rest was recovering market growth from last years drop.

Onward and Upward!

Not a bad month. Company stock did well and we weren't in a blackout period so I was able to sell some. We have an $8k tax bill to pay (owe a shitload for capital gains from selling stock, a good problem to have, frankly) so next month might be a bit flat.

I haven't updated here since November. I've been rolling lately with market recoveries since December and a little side hustle bringing in some extra money. The side hustle is work I took over from my boss as he's travelling more, but is on top of my normal pay, mostly done within work hours and completely optional (but only comes up every few months for a few thousand bucks). However, I'm going back to school part time this summer for a Masters program. Employer paying half, but still going to take a chunk out of the networth in the short term. Still trying to find scholarships and grants to see if I can get more covered.

June 1, 2018 - $385,931
July 1, 2018 - $389,444
August 1, 2018 - $393,286
September 1, 2018 - $406,838       + $13,552 m/m
October 1, 2018 - $412,660           +5,821
November 1, 2018 - $409,593        -$3,067
December 1, 2018 - $419,008        +9,146
January 1, 2019 - $417,324           -1,684
February 1, 2019 - $424,732         +7,408
March 1, 2019 - $431,780             +7,049
April 1, 2019 - $442,293               +10,512

On Pace for the half million mark for early 2020 but a chance I can still reach it by the end of 2019. In August 2018 I stated I was on pace for half million club for August 2020, so clearly the snowball is starting to build! Congrats to all you savers and investors - if you're in this group, you're way ahead of most folks!

It's kind of nuts to me how "easy" it is to accumulate wealth if you have a decent income and are remotely frugal.

Gonna throw my hat into the ring on this thread. It's crazy to go back and see the progress over the years. I came out of grad school in 2010 with $90k in student debt, without a pot to piss in, earning $40k a year. Four years ago this month, I was celebrating a zero net worth after a long period of focusing on attacking the loans. At that time, I decided to refocus my efforts on saving and investing more and to not go as crazy on the loans. Just last week, my personal investment accounts crossed the $250k mark for the first time. And this week, I will be making my final student loan payment. It feels great!

It's a little surreal for me getting to this point. I'm in the camp where it has felt like a big deal. Both of these goals, paying off the student loans and hitting $250k in investments, have been on my mind for so long and now both have been achieved... at practically the same time. I do feel different-- "rich" in the sense that my financial anxieties already seemed to have lessened. I don't feel prisoner to any debt and I have confidence in my nest egg. Now, in my 34th year, my traditional retirement (e.g. 65+) is already taken care of and all efforts moving forward will continue to shave off the years until true financial independence. (Now I know everyone uses their own form of accounting; I'll be following based on my personal investments/retirement accounts--separate from the wife's).

Checking in about 15 months after hitting $250k. Just this week I eclipsed $312,500.00 for the first time. This was a cool number for me, because I love to extrapolate the growth potential of what has been already been amassed... In 10 years, it should be worth appx $625k; in 20 years, it should be $1.25m; and in 30 years, at age 65, it would grow to be worth $2.5m (inflation adjusted)! Although, there is no way I am working that long though. Lol. Will be drawing well before then, but the security feels really good... Okay, back to plodding along in the race. Good luck everyone!

Absolutely agree. I remember hitting $100k in my TSP (401k) recently and being pretty excited about the milestone, and already it's at $121k this morning.

And I sometimes lament how "long" it feels like it's taking to hit our FIRE number, but the reality is we only found MMM in 2015. 4 years in and we're already close enough that I can start predicting an approximate date for our last day.

It's kind of nuts to me how "easy" it is to accumulate wealth if you have a decent income and are remotely frugal.

Yeah.

I started working FT in 2013. Even if I "only" work 15 years, I'm still early in my career :)

   Jul 1, 2016      -$19,048
   Jan 1, 2017      -$25,189     <--Found MMM
   Jan 1, 2018       $110,473
   Jan 1, 2019       $212,860
Love that illustration :D

Sometimes it's hard to not lament the wasted years before MMM, but then I watch everyone around me not saving enough and start to feel incredibly lucky that I understand the math and have a spouse that's frugal even if she's not too excited about compound interest (yet!).

Hopefully more people I know join the party soon... it'll be a lonely 25 years retired alone..

Welcome new people, and congratulations @ABK! Nice to see quite a few pop over into the 300k range - I hope to do that by around July.

As for me, up 3.5% or $9,621.91 to $285,167.09 last month. Thank you, market!

Same here. I seem to be gaining about 65K per year.

Not posted for a very long time but have been keeping up to date with people's progress and loving the gains that everyone has had.

We updated our net worth this quarter and were surprised to find it at a total of £410,477 (of which £82,300 is liquid)!

We have somehow had an increase of £95,785 over 2 years. I had stretch goals of increasing by £100,000 every 3 years so this was a nice shock :)

Decided to join this thread with my entire net worth (investments + HSA + home equity) in the race to $500k. The equity portion is my half, as are all of the investments. We do plan on selling the house when I retire (she is already retired) so i feel comfortable including that into the calculation.

Apr-14-2019: $304272.12 consisting of roughly $180k invested and $125k equity

Totally unsure when to project graduation from this thread but let's hope for $80k-$90k per year between growth and contributions so about 2.5 years with a stretch goal of April/May 2021.

It's been awhile since I've been on the forum!  When the market started to do less great, I figured mentally, I'd do better if I took a break from tracking while still having all my saving on autopilot.  Last post was in October, so just looking at Personal Capital and guesstimating what my net worth was each month based off of that.

Hi! I joined this thread in October (Original post: Hello? Hello? I'm joining! I have very sporadic and somewhat unpredictable income: I get paid for projects when they publish, which means sometimes I go 6 months without income and then get a lot of checks all at once. It makes the savings game feel weird and unsteady, so I thought a race to track my NW might help me feel more like I'm making real progress. I started saving in 2009 but very slowly; I've been taking it more seriously (and making more regular money) for maybe three years. I'm 33, I'm a writer, I want to be FI to have options in life, and in case my industry dies :) Basic goal is a million by the time I'm 45. October 1, 2018: I'm in with 253,182.24 (this includes all Vanguard accounts, including some cash reserves, and my HSA, but not my monthly checking/credit accounts. I'm a renter and my car is crap, so these are my assets).

.... and then was promptly disqualified when the market dropped so never got in the habit of posting. Don't count your chickens, etc! But I figured I should come back...this still seems like a good way to remind myself progress is being made. I have a partner but we do finances separately so this is just me. Renter with an old car, so this is genuine net worth tracking. Hi new friends!

why not try doing 250 to 500 in quicker time than you did 100 to 250?

Last post in 100-250k here: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/race-from-100-to-250k/msg1440605/#msg1440605

Took me 26 months to go from 100-250, so that would require me to hit 500k on or before April 30th 2019.  Projection shows hitting it ~Jan 2021 at the current rate.  Slow and steady :)

So I've had some busy months and haven't been diligently tracking net worth, but had some time to figure it up this evening:
Feb-17   $251,409.30
Oct-17   $318,536.66

Rough projection for 500k is now Feb 2020! (assuming 7% market returns and the RE investments continue).  Given that the estimate moved up nearly year, I'd say that if things continue to go better than expected, then April 2019 is possible, but at the same time I don't want to be too optimistic...

Feb-17   $251,409.30
Oct-17   $318,536.66
Jan-18   $361,374.09
Mar-18  $369,142.20
Apr-18   $385,517.64
May-18  $392,342.38
Jun-18   $400,461.03

Updated my mortgage balance in Mint and just crossed over the $400k mark!  Optimistically looking towards April 2019 :)

Jul-18   $413,702.08
Aug-18  $425,816.43
Sep-18  $427,991.94
Oct-18  $416,693.85
Nov-18  $428,453.60

October saw the first dip in awhile, December doesn't look good either, haha

Dec-18  $417,417
Jan-19  $428,316
Feb-19  $449,616
Mar-19  $473,317
Apr-19  $489,848

So it turns out that I did not reach $500k NW this month (04/2019) to achieve the goal of 250-500k as fast as 100-250k.  It was really close though.  I ended a long term relationship in January and gifted that individual $15k to assist with a home purchase.
Here's hoping that I'll just be 1-2 months behind that goal!

could be worse. I ended a marriage, gave up 300k in net worth plus alimony and child support. 15k is a small price to pay.

its all going fine but the alimony and child support do put a brake on accumulation.

I'll update my figures later but let just say I can back into this thread from the 500k plus one :D

Blew past my 2019 goal of $325k already. Hm, new goal for 2019 EOY is now $400k.

May is a 3 paycheck month for me, so hoping to keep the gains train rolling. I got a few hundred dollars of backpay this month, plus a small COLA increase as well. Fingers crossed on a promotion I just interviewed for at work.

Upcoming expenses: car repair (EVAP system - maybe I can DIY this?).

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Apr-18   $252,693 - INV $385,040 - NW
May-18  $263,950 - INV $396,500 - NW
June-18 $268,500 - INV $401,900 - NW ---> hope markets stay low for a while.
July-18  $279,100 - INV $414,336 - NW
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are spending on our family home for mom and dad, Property is mine, but highly illiquid for foreseeable future. Maybe next 40 years.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search.Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.

I am buying a house, so I'm going to have to decide how to track net worth again...really don't want to take the perceived net worth hit of the down payment, but I may just do that and leave real estate out of it entirely. Transaction costs for selling houses mess with the equity math so I don't really want to include it.

Numbers based on Mint

4/30/2019 Fire: $218,835.60 + Medi $65,978.70  = $284,814.30 ~9.86%%

Unexpected but not unexpected?  I knew I'd get extra cash but was unsure on the amount... It's apparently enough to get a real bottle of wine!  (Not that I am going to do that!)  I think I am going to have to revise my numbers, considering I already smashed them..  I expected to be somewhere in the range of between 270-280k by EOY.   I think I am going to surpass that.  Just a weeeeee bit.

So new EOY is somewhere in the range of 330-340k, pending market changes, side income, etc.  Now comes the fun part.  Lets see how fast I can make a liar of myself and pass the hell out of that mark!

As a side note: 10k of that networth is going to a business account.  Doesn't technically change anything but mint won't be tracking it so it may look like I lost a little bit next month.
