Don't let boarder42 see you say that!

Seriously, check out the Don't Pay Off Your Mortgage thread. In the US with typical mortgage rates, you're much better off not paying down your mortgage.

Congrats on the huge progress the past 4 years!

So I should know this, but I've never held money in a taxable account. I still have $180,000 in student loans that are on an income based repayment program that will be forgiven in 6 years. Not here to argue about the ethics of that, I've fleshed that out already. The reason I bring this up is that my yearly payment on my student loan is 10% of my taxable income. My question is would the dividends/interest that a taxable account would generate be considered income? I've heard of a 1099-DIV. Even if I re-invest them, would I pay taxes on them immediately or only when I withdrawal? I need to do the calculation of how that would affect my decision to do mortgage vs taxable (i.e. an additional 10% penalty on any taxable income the taxable account would generate due to dividends/interest).

I'd say a $14k increase in investments and a $16k increase in net worth in a month is pretty special -- at least by most Americans' standards.   Congrats on the steady progress!

Okay I will buy a beer for everyone. You can all take a sip. Dibs on the backwash.

Seriously, I have been jonesing to get into this thread since shortly after I joined the site. Goal is to hit $500k by Dec, 2021. That's 40 months, so about $6200 net worth monthly. Sounds daunting, but I am hoping the market does at least a little of the work for us.

Sure, you're in. You're also not wearing pants...that's weird enough. But, you're not alone. My understanding is that we don't get to don the pants until the next thread. It's odd, but the place has a chill vibe, so I go just go with the flow.

Column 2: total net worth (including investments, savings account and the paid off part of the house)

I feel like I've found my people!

I'm in the Investable Assets crowd, at 249K as we start 2016.

I will play the tortoise here (or perhaps Eeyore) with a goal of about 4 years from now, in 2020.

Over on the long-term net worth goals thread, I just posted about some of my variables, include pessimistic estimates about spending and income, inflation, and a possible home addition. That's why I'm giving a longer time horizon. If the market is reasonable, and our spending and income are more in my optimistic zone, and we don't do a home addition, the time frame shortens to about 2 years, in 2018.

And that, friends, is motivational. Thanks!

One final thing--some helpful info could be added in here, as we go on this journey together--context like I've shared here, as well as incomes, as those of us who are making 40K shouldn't compare with those making 120K!

I'm married and our combined income in 2015 was 80K. In 2016, it should be close to 120K gross.

Edit 2/18/16: 395K when you add in home equity.

UPDATE MID-2016

Alright, making progress!

Pulled 65K of home equity and still planning on the addition. Currently...

- Cash: 152K (This is high because of the possibility of an addition.)
- Investments: 217K
    - "Investible Assets" (Cash+Investments) 369K (This is up 120K, but 65K was from home equity, so actual increase here in 6 mos is 55K.)

- Home equity 52K
- Total net worth, including equity: 421K (This is up 26K in 5 months.)

- Mortgage: 203K

-Total net worth minus mortgage: 218K

This feels like really great progress, considering VTSAX (as a proxy for the economy) is only up 3.65% YTD.

Needing to update a bit here...we are halfway through an addition, and our income situation changed.

Today:

Cash and liquid accounts: 80K. Of this, home addition and other capital projects are 37K+8K+10K = 55K, leaving 25K actually.

Investments: 293K

Cash + Investments = 318K "investible"

With new savings goal of 5K/month (conservative) and a real rate of return of 3% (also conservative), I estimate...

Future:

01/01/18...365K
01/01/19...436K
01/01/20...509K...so Christmas 2019 is when I plan to graduate from here to the race to a million topic, barring huge market drops (which I expect)
01/01/21...584K
01/01/22...662K
01/01/23...741K
01/01/24...824K

UPDATE 9/29/18: I MADE IT, 15 MONTHS EARLY! NW TODAY = 501,463!

7/31/18: $264,666
8/31/18: $276,905

Not a bad month. Investments chugging along. It was a rough month for our cash reserves (not counted here, invested only shown), but we should be able to replenish those without minimizing any investments.

I've did NW calculations mid-month in the $100K-$250K thread, but since I'll be with you fine folks for a few years, I figured I would switch to reporting at the beginning of the month like most others. I need to average about +$6K increase in NW per month to hit $500K around December, 2021.

Oct. 2018 $256,337.25

This was a painful month for me. We sold our 5th wheel we lived full time in, however we were about $6,000 upside down, so had to cover that. Because we moved into an aprtment, we had no bed, furniture, tv, etc. That all cost us another $4k-$5k to outfit the place. We did it relatively mustachian. $500 mattress, $600 sectional, then several pieces from Ikea, etc.

Hoping to get back on track this month. I don’t foresee any major expenses the remainder of the year aside from costs for the Holidays and also missing work due to holidays/travel. I don’t have paid vacation (contractor) but I can try and work some Saturdays to compensate for the missed time.

It could be a bit of a stretch to reach 400k by the end of the year, but with a little help from the market, it could happen!  I have a lot going on right now with a lot of travel between now and then, including moving trans-Atlantic (mostly at the government's expense), so I'll just have to keep it frugal.

Too much eating out this month! Advanced some utility and insurance payments to hit a minimum CC spend. Our portfolio was due for a quarterly rebalance since the international markets have been crazy volatile and it triggered a tolerance band on the overall allocation as a result.

Still hoping to hit $300k by January 1.

Hello? Hello?

I'm joining! I have very sporadic and somewhat unpredictable income: I get paid for projects when they publish, which means sometimes I go 6 months without income and then get a lot of checks all at once. It makes the savings game feel weird and unsteady, so I thought a race to track my NW might help me feel more like I'm making real progress. I started saving in 2009 but slowly; I've been taking it more seriously for maybe three years. I'm 33, I'm a writer, I want to be FI to have options in life, and in case my industry dies :) Basic goal is a million by the time I'm 45.

October 1, 2018: I'm in with 253,182.24 (this includes all Vanguard accounts, including some cash reserves, and my HSA, but not my monthly checking/credit accounts).

Like @Nick_Miller I will buy you all a beer to share.
