10-2017: $485,217 (+12.9k)
11-2017: $501,933 (+16.7k)

My goal was to hit $500k by the end of December, but November turned out to be a very good month. Now the question is will we remain over $500k by the end of December. I think I'll stick around this thread for a while before moving on to the $500k to $1M thread.

Full November expense report is up on my site.

Long time reader of MMM, first time poster.  I guess I can go ahead and join you all since I just reached $250,000+.  Thought it would be a good way to look back and see how I'm doing.  Another biggie is we just paid off our mortgage (yay!).  I don't know if you all count your house, but I'm not since it is our forever home and I never plan on selling.  If I did, our net worth would be over $500,000.  Just going to count retirement savings.

We are in our 40's, and we got a late start on saving, so we have a lot of catching up to do.  Wish I would have started saving a LONG time ago :(  Oh well!  Since we don't have a mortgage payment, hopefully we will really be able to bump it up. I also have a pension and I'm not counting that either.  Just retirement accounts and emergency fund.  Anyway, I'm officially in!

16th March 2017 - $156,970.56
14th April 2017 - $172,158.80 (+$15,188.24)
18th May 2017 - $187,986.35 (+$15,827.55)
18th June 2017 - $219,742.03 (+$31,755.68) Whatever small amount I had in cryptocurrencies went bonkers 😳
14th July 2017 - $200,846.03 (-$18,896) - Vanguard dropped over 5% and the crypto portfolio dropped 34%. Additionally I paid for house renovation, moving, bond, and prepaid the rent. So the drop may look dramatic but it's really where it was 6 weeks ago. Also I own way more Vanguard units now than during the last update.
17th August 2017 - $228,106.09 (+$27,260.06) - Back on track, although I still have some big expenses coming up in the near future. Hoping to graduate by the end of October 2017.
26th September 2017 - $228,382.36 (+$276.27) - cryptos went down by the same amount as what I saved. I'm done with the big house related expenses now.
13th October 2017 - $256,067.92 (+$27,685.56) - Looks like I'm done here. Markets went back up + I'm back to big savings. My portfolio is pretty volatile due to the crypto exposure so it may come back under 250k at any point of time. Rebalancing would trigger massive tax so I'm leaving it for now. See you in the next thread. Good luck all!
...(moved to 250k->500k thread)
16th November 2017 - $312,757.72 (+$56,689.80) - cryptocurrency doing its thing😳
14th December 2017 - $472,428.34 (+$159,670.60) - over time I got used to crypto doubling every year but doubling every month made me liquidate big part of my portfolio. This went against my investment policy statement but elevated a lot of mental stress. Win. I also worked crazy overtime hours since the last update, keeping spendings low and everything else on track.

Didn't think it's possible, but I'm actually getting nervous from seeing how fast your stash grow.

Starting 10/2016 - $310,000 (rough estimate since we still have a few accounts left to be merged)
11/2016 - $328k
12/2016- $347k
1/2017 $358.7k
3/2017 - $367.2
5/2017 - $382.2
6/2017-$395.0k
7/2017 - $419.3k
10/2017 - $441.9k
11/2017 - $473.4k
12/2017 - $482.5k

$502k

December bonus pushed us over the top. Pretty excited to graduate today :) Kind of an odd feeling because I can't tell any of my friends/family. Most of them have a lot of consumer debt/live paycheck-paycheck so $500k seems like an enormous sum (which it is). But to me, nothing really feels different. We're still saving towards the goal of FIRE and I still refuse to buy coffee at work since they upped the price $.25 (back in my day it was free! lol) See you all in the next group!

1/17   - $352,398
5/17   - $378,770
6/17   - $401,823
7/17   - $425,070
8/17   - $428,620
9/17   - $449,356
10/17 - $450,874
11/17 - $466,186

12/17 - $473,407

$112,515 increase this year.  Almost half contributions/half growth.  I have to keep reminding myself that this growth is abnormal and to never expect this again!

Hard to guess when I'll make $500,000 (my savings doesn't change much and growth is not predictable).  If no growth/no loss, I'm there by July 1.

Apr-17   255,900
May-17  263,800
Jun-17   268,100
Jul-17    273,100
Aug-17  276,800
Sep-17  284,500
Oct-17   292,100
Nov-17  302,000
Dec-17  309,500

Another great month. I get my December check early since I  am off for the next two weeks.

I am up 190K this year. Some of it was a estate payout, and some was money I had but was not counting. Aside from that, I saved about 55K. Overall, very happy with my progress. Happy that I will keep the ability to contribute to both my 457(b) and 43(b) accounts.

Plan is to somehow get to 400K this year.

Another month, not great...we are only up ~1k...I'm wondering if something isn't tracking correctly on mint, but I'm too lazy to go figure it out, because that seems low.

House is planning to close on Jan 25th, at which point we liquidate some of that money, and I will move from this thread to the next! We bought a cheaper house with a rental suite, so next year looks promising for gains, even though there is a mat leave thrown in there.

Overall for 2017, I believe just with investments and savings, we were up ~125k (mostly from savings), this was an usually good year due to work situation. I don't expect growth like that going forward!

Even though we are doing really well, we still need to work on leaking money... somehow this month we still spent 5k. That seems way too high for what we spend our money on. (1.7k is mortgage, but still).

lol.  I am not entirely sure what I did the last time I posted - I updated how I calculated my net worth but appear to have either used October numbers for November, or mis-labeled November as October.  Whatever...at least it's going the right direction!

Code: [Select]
Date             Assets           Debts          Net Worth
October 2017 $370,483.90 -$120,007.15 $250,476.80
December 2017 $382,100.79 -$121,838.12 $260,262.67

May 2017: $251k
June 2017: $257k
July 2017: $264k
August 2017: $269k
September 2027: $279k
October 2017: $286k
November 2017: $296k
December 2017: $302k

We had a pretty great year! We surpassed our expectations by a whole lot and we saved 40% of our gross. Of course we want to do better next year but I don't see our net worth increasing too much in 2018 because we are building a garage/workshop and remodelling a bathroom. But we have been planning for this for years.

Dec 2015 = $288k
Dec 2016 = $331k
Dec 2017 = $440k!

It would have been even higher but I paid my first half of 2018 property taxes and bought some items for work that I won't be able to deduct after this year.

It's too early to know when I'll complete this race though. I only had 3 weeks off this year, worked 50+ hours/week for half the year, and my wife was off on maternity leave for a while. So, childcare costs were low and the OT contract is over, so I doubt next year will be as great. Hopefully, I'll be bugging out of here by the end of 2018.

Thanks 2017! You've been great! I never though I'd have a $100+k NW gain!

June 1, 2017: $349,328
July 1, 2017: $362,675
Aug. 1, 2017: $373,748
Sep 1, 2017: $378,549 (bought a new house...I know, I know)
Oct 1, 2017: $389,829
Nov. 1, 2017: $396,444
December 1, 2017: $407,245
January 1, 2018: $412,626

2017 was a great year for investment gains.  Keep telling myself that's not likely to repeat itself.  Can't control market forces so I don't have a specific time goal for hitting $500k, but I do have a goal of saving/investing 50%+ of my take home/discretionary income in 2018 (50%+ of amounts left after paying taxes, insurance and mortgage).

Just graduated to here at 253. Hoping to increase the net worth to $350 by the end of the year and possibly $400 as a stretch goal.

Other goals: Pay off student loans this year using various reward credit cards to acquire various travel rewards. Hoping to get the Southwest companion pass in this first quarter.

Good luck everyone!

12/1/2017: INV-$256,324.07    NW-$266,011.53

1/1/2018: INV-$265,731.22    NW-$277,837.89

We still have ~$40K in limbo with about half owed to the contractor to finish repairs.  We will have a little extra to invest come February when we are done paying for rent on top of our mortgage and all the insurance payouts, contractor bills, and appliances costs are finished.

Friends,

It is with mixed emotions (not really) that I announce today that I have graduated from this thread and will be joining the big kids* in the race from $500k to $1M thread.

My first post in this thread was Dec. 9, 2016 when we had invested assets of $385k and I didn't think we'd get to $500k by the end of 2017.

Wishing you all the best on your continued journeys. You will get there!

*please promise to take me back if the big kids kick me out - thanks.

With today's crazy market, I just crossed over the threshold from the previous race.  Posting to follow till the start of next month, since I figure the market will probably have a little dip after the jump today, so I'll wait till I'm more securely on this side of the of the line.  In the meantime, hi!

Well it finally happened, NW was down $11k last month.  This was due to a pullback in a couple of my "picked" stocks.  After the tremendous run-up they enjoyed a retrenchment was inevitable.  The long-term prospects haven't changed though, so I'm holding long and strong.

I certainly can't complain about 2017.  We are up $122k which is a 71.4% growth.  I attribute 75% of that to investment gains and 25% to our newfound MMM frugality.  We still have improvements to make but the ship is moving in the right direction.

Best wishes to all in 2018!!

P.S.  The dog remained healthy this month.

So after posting this morning, my portfolio of "stock picks" closed up almost $7k today.

You don't get that level of excitement with index funds...
