May 2017: $251k
June 2017: $257k
July 2017: $264k
August 2017: $269k
September 2027: $279k

I think this is our biggest jump up in net worth ever. How exciting!

1/17 - $352,398
5/17 - $378,770
6/17 - $401,823
7/17 - $425,070
8/17 - $428,620
9/17 - $449,356

At this growth rate, I could be to the target by the end of the year.  I'm not counting on that though.  I'm just going to keep working my plan...enjoy the growth but not count on it at this point.

Hello! Another newbie joining the thread this month - and hello to Pizza, Turk, and McStache the other newbs!

My goal was to reach the $250k mark in investments between DW and my accounts, now the plan is to start working on buying property, and we are in a HCOL/insane cost of buying ANYTHING area, so this may mean stashing more liquid cash rather than putting everything into Vanguard as has been the case for the last year or two.
(Any advice on this is more than welcome! I have a friend who does wealth management and real estate investing and this was her suggestion when we met last week)
Have to decide whether it is even possible or a good idea to buy in such an overextended real estate market as NYC.....but I work a very high stress, long hours job so the thought of buying an investment property to rent to tenants outside NYC is also daunting.....
Due to this change, I'm guessing monthly gains may be less over this next period as it will be just the 401k and (hopefully) market gains.
So that's a bit about me - MINT says that without any changes, we should hit this goal around the end of 2019/beginning 2020, so let's see.....how accurate MINT is.....

Hello! Another newbie joining the thread this month - and hello to Pizza, Turk, and McStache the other newbs!

Thanks for the preemptive welcome, TTFNYC!

I also just crossed the $250K mark this past month.  I had projected it would take 2.5-3 years to go from $100K to $250K and it actually took 1.75 thanks to the market tailwinds and a small windfall.  Based on my spreadsheet, I project I'll hit $500K in 4ish years - though who really knows.  This time frame lines up with about when I turn 30 and it would be awesome to be a half-millionaire by then (two Nice Round Numbers at once!), so I will shoot for that.

Historic
13-Jul     $0
13-Dec   $6,153
14-Dec   $49,012
15-Dec   $101,290
16-Dec   $179,750
This Year
17-Mar   $199,234
17-Jun    $218,315
This Quarter
17-Jul     $226,577
17-Aug   $231,008
17-Sep   $251,872

TryingtoFIREinNYC, I was wondering how do you get Mint to tell you that goal date? Thanks!

Dandy-
If you have all your investment accounts tracking in Mint you can set up a "goal" and then give your monthly saving amount or give a date and it will tell you how much you need to add, I believe-
I like it because I set the $500k goal date for a set time, and so every month that the market or my savings overshoots the assumed input, it adjusts the goal date accordingly closer!
Oh the small things that help to keep you on track......!

Starting 10/2016 - $310,000 (rough estimate since we still have a few accounts left to be merged)
11/2016 - $328k
12/2016- $347k
1/2017 $358.7k
3/2017 - $367.2
5/2017 - $382.2
6/2017-$395.0k
7/2017 - $419.3k

10/2017 - $441.9k (+22.6k)

Always amazed when I actually remember to do this exercise - it doesn't 'feel' like my husband and I are almost '1/2 millionaires' but we should hit it within a year. We have $325k in investments and the rest is equity in properties. I know some people exclude that and I'm still figuring out how to track it.

I just hold the purchase price constant and subtract off the mortgage every month. Seems like then it will 'true-up' when we actually sell the property. I think that works pretty well because we're in a LCOL market that has been fairly consistent  over the years. I don't necessarily want to exclude it since we're actively growing our rental portfolio. If I excluded it our net worth would have dropped by $30k this summer when we bought our newest duplex which isn't an accurate picture either. If anyone sees a flaw in my calculation method please feel free to share :)

12/1/2015 - 248k
6/1/2016 - 301k
10/1/2016 - 352k
3/1/2017 - 412k
7/1/2017 - 453k
8/1/2017 - 469k
9/1/2017 - 479k
10/1/2017 - 502k!

Race complete! Our average monthly increase was $11.5k which amazingly is more than our post-tax pay. Hasn't really sunk in that we're half-millionaires yet...

I'm going to post some more statistics from this thread early next week once I compile them.

why not try doing 250 to 500 in quicker time than you did 100 to 250?

Last post in 100-250k here: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/race-from-100-to-250k/msg1440605/#msg1440605

Took me 26 months to go from 100-250, so that would require me to hit 500k on or before April 30th 2019.  Projection shows hitting it ~Jan 2021 at the current rate.  Slow and steady :)

So I've had some busy months and haven't been diligently tracking net worth, but had some time to figure it up this evening:
Feb-17   $251,409.30
Oct-17   $318,536.66

Rough projection for 500k is now Feb 2020! (assuming 7% market returns and the RE investments continue).  Given that the estimate moved up nearly year, I'd say that if things continue to go better than expected, then April 2019 is possible, but at the same time I don't want to be too optimistic...

That's an interesting way of looking at it.

April 2019 is when my SO and I are projected for $500k as well. Will be cool to see if we can reel that in a bit.

If we hold through our recent pace (which was amplified significantly by market gains) that's pretty close to when we'd hit it, too. Kind of crazy to think.

Makes me think of this though: https://xkcd.com/1894/

I'm at $215 including an IRA.  Husband has around $50k in his own account.  So I guess we also belong in this thread.  Do I get to count the IRA?  What about home equity?

Husband has the $50k just sitting in a bank account not earning decent interest but that is for another thread.

You can count whatever you like. Some people, like myself, are doing household net worth. Others are only counting invested assets. Some people are only counting assets that are in their own name and excluding their spouse. I'm sure there are some other reporting nuances as well.

As said there is no right way. I participate in two threads with a very conservative personal net worth and one with all in couple net worth with housing gains.

I do think it helps followers if you list how you break it out and give background on yourself instead of just posting random fluxes.

Statistics time!

There have been 87 members to post more than one progress report in this thread (i.e. two or more data points). Of these, 21 members have broken $500k! The average monthly gain for members in this thread is $9.6k.

10 members have tracked their full race in this thread. In other words, they have posted progress reports starting from ~$250k and have broken $500k. I attached a graph of these.

I don't intend to continue tracking stats for this thread, now that I've moved on to the $500k-$1 million thread. If anyone else wants to pick up where I left off or run other statistics/graphs I attached my raw numbers spreadsheet.

I almost included you in the graph because you're so close to $500k. I didn't exclude you because you started above $250k. My data points for JustGettingStarted1980 begin at $258k and for Libertea they start at $261k. If I recall correctly, my filtering criteria was max_data_point > $500k AND (max_data_point - min_data_point) > $240k.

But yes, you will be the 11th.

I'm in. Started getting serious in 2015. Have been relatively frugal and have a good paying job so had some MMM attributes even before I knew about this corner of the web. I'm counting my home equity as part of NW although looking for my non-real estate investment to eventually hit $250k on its own.

So coool!!!!! Thanks for doing it.

Mine started at 252, I think I count as the 11th lol

I almost included you in the graph because you're so close to $500k. I didn't exclude you because you started above $250k. My data points for JustGettingStarted1980 begin at $258k and for Libertea they start at $261k. If I recall correctly, my filtering criteria was max_data_point > $500k AND (max_data_point - min_data_point) > $240k.

But yes, you will be the 11th.

Heh, if I got paid every two weeks / twice a month I would be there already, but alas I only get paid monthly, so the check is still 2 weeks out. Luckily, they are much larger, so I should shoot past 500k a bit, maybe 505 to 510 depending on markets. (though i seem to be spending like crazy lately, new gaming PC, trip in DEC)

I finally hit 500K this month.

405K rental property equity
100K in retirement accounts
30K cash
32K in student loan debt

Sitting on 503K at the moment. Not counting 20K of value across 3 vehicles.

Date          NW
Apr-16    $155,162
Jan-17    $252,675
Aug-17    $321,753

As of today $348,218 so about 17k in the last two months.

This sounds great but could have been soooo much better. We installed a natural gas heater in the garage, and our fridge that came with the house decided to stop working so got to replace that as well.

Overall it's a 56% and 64% savings rate for Sept and to-date in Oct.

Been busy and missed a month. Only now posting for end of September.
Solid couple of months; good savings rate and the investments are moving in the right direction again!
Sadly, we figured out year end taxes and we need to set aside $20k in the next couple of months, so I am already mentally taking this out of the numbers. Not unexpected but always disappointing ...
The really good news is that without accounting for the final tax numbers we were on track for about $100k in savings this year.

My formatting was driving me nuts so I moved my tracking to excel. (See photo below).

+13k this month in savings. Not too bad considering it was a transition month with lots of one off moving expenses. Progress may slow down in the next few weeks as Mr.HH is currently funemployed and looking for work, so we are a one income family for a while.

But, we may be selling our house (I adjusted the house appreciation to reflect our listing price). Offers should come in tomorrow!!! Next month this table may look very different!

Jan 2017 $368k
Feb 2017 $390k includes 20k windfall from an inheritance.
Mar 2017 $396k
Apr 2017 $398k
May 2017 $404k
June 2017 $408k
July 2017 $415k
Aug 2017 $423k
Sept 2017 $432k
Oct 2017 $440k

Nov 2017 $448k I actually had a net worth drop as we paid a chunk of tax for my hubby's business (4k) and a huge repair bill for our investment property (2k). But I added in $10k of shares that I had been excluding for no particular reason. Maybe because they are worth less than we paid for them so I  consider them a write off. Considering the outlays this month we still did well not to drop back further.

Apr-17   255,870
May-17  263,835
Jun-17   268,100
Jul-17    273,100
Aug-17  276,800
Sep-17  284,500
Oct-17   292,100

This month I started putting an additional $400 aside into my new HSA, which also saved me $100 in payroll taxes. With two more months to go and an average savings of $6100 per month, I am still on track to hit $300K net worth by the end of the year.  Going to really clamp down on expenses in November to make it happen.

My savings rate is hovering around 80%.

I might make next year's goal something crazy, like save $100K--I can definitely come up with $70K, but the other $30K might be tougher.

+$142k this year! Aiming, for just under 100k in any given year of savings. Though, I am really only tracking worth gains, not savings directly. (So it includes gains/losses in the market) Given 2 month(s) left, and (-42k) more to go, I hit this goal!

...and GOAL! Moving on to the 500k->1M race, so this will be my last update in this group.

Stats....

Time from 250->500: 22Months
Average gain: 11.7K per month (Includes market + pay + everything)

NOTES:

It has come to my attention over the last 3-4 years of focusing on this that the market continues to become a larger and larger influence. I think with this year's massive bull run it has been exceedingly astonishing.

We cut our expenses down at the end of 2016 and have noticed massive increases per month because of it. So spending is certainly a huge influence.

Good luck to the rest of you! Hope to be greeting you in the next thread soon.

Congrats!

Thanks it feels great! (I actually won't "see" it in personal capital until market close for the jump from 499 to 500, and not until Friday for the 511/512. So I still have some fun to look forward to this week!)

1/17   - $352,398
5/17   - $378,770
6/17   - $401,823
7/17   - $425,070
8/17   - $428,620
9/17   - $449,356
10/17 - $450,874

Had quite a bit of growth in my investments but used quite a bit of my cash stash for a project.  Even so, positive movement.  That's outstanding!  But it does mean I won't make it to the end of this race by year's end.

We seem to be increasing by about 100k each year, so fingers crossed that we'll be able to break the $500k by the end of 2018. We're also having a baby in a few weeks, so we'll see how that affects our goals.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
