Investments net negative, but annual bonus month- put most of it in right away, may have a little left at month end after the normal monthly expenditures to add too.

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.

I'll play! I'm 31, if you include the future value of my pension I am just over 250. I made some adjustments to how I calculate my liquid NW a little under a year ago so my numbers don't look to far back but they are now more accurate and precise.

          2021              2022
JAN     N/A               $251,327
FEB     $213,392
MAR    $222,443
APR     $225,864
MAY    $231,841
JUN     $240,641
JUL     $230,023
AUG    $229,620
SEP     $233,285
OCT    $232,914
NOV    $230,646
DEC    $240,387

There were quite a few fluctuations in 2021 due to having a kid, paying down some debts, and investing some into my son's 529.

And I'm back! What a rough start to the year.

The first number is retirement related investments, the second is total NW including real estate, cash savings, and other investments. I'm only counting retirement related investments for this race!

December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423,991)
December 2020: $398,408 (total NW $572,704)
December 2021: $506,167 (total NW $665,639) Graduated for now, hope it holds!
January 2022: $487,694 (total NW $652,192) Didn't hold!
February 2022: $469,440 (total NW $635,429) Dropped out of the next race before it even started....

Less spending this month as bf and I settle into our new lives. He's learning to be a lot more conscious about finances, and I'm helping him set himself up for success (he's a 1099, so we are working on getting him paid under a single-member LLC, and taking advantage of as many tax breaks as we can, separating the LLC from his personal finances, etc.).

Work has simultaneously settled down and blown up, which is a really good place to be in. I carved out a fully remote position for myself and although I am doing anti-arbitrage (moved from MCOL to HCOL), I'm still thrilled about this chapter of my life. I'm hitting my stride and really happy with how things are going right now.

NW/Investments

Jan: $280,013/$301,963
Feb: $278,012/$295,951
March: $286,533/$307,886

Decent move in the right direction this month. I'll pay off the end of my student loan next month so that will be nice.

We bought a house in another state (LCOL) and sold our house in an area where the real estate prices have increased dramatically. Our house sold for >$200,000 what we paid for it in late 2017. We cleared $198,000 which explains the huge increase in our investments/savings.

March 2022: $492,407 (total NW $665,716)

Let's try this again with a better table. Wish I could FIRE yesterday! Maybe I'll do a coast/lean fire thing, maybe I'll get a windfall. Maybe the business I have not yet created will take off. No matter what, I'll stay the course.

Ouch. Spending and saving was pretty normal this month, so the decrease is all from the market. It's certainly been a journey since I graduated into this thread...maybe one day I'll stay consistently above the threshold.

When I checked this morning, all my investment returns have been wiped out now (I've only been actively investing for a few years now), so that's a bummer.. However- my total savings is WAY higher than it would've been if I never started down this road! So even though it hurts to see it going down, I'll stay the course and ride it out because I really want to be financially free sooner rather than later!

Feb: $278,012/$295,951
March: $286,533/$307,886
April: $267,850/$295,005

This market, ugh. I get it but man I hate seeing that number keep dropping.

March 2022: $492,407 (total NW $665,716)
April 2022: $469,971 (total NW $660,188)

How do you guys handle marriage in your calculations? I recently Tied the knot, and am unsure if I should count us together or individual. We started sharing a joint account and savings. Would I consider half of those, or include the full amount plus their assets/debts?

Just curious how others in this thread calculate it. Currently I am just counting my half, not including the joint accounts.

@kickel Congrats!! I think it's totally up to you and what makes the most sense for your situation. Since you combined accounts it may make sense to put your numbers in together. I got married a year ago and we've kept our accounts separate so I just put my numbers here. Of course many decisions I make now take my partner into account but he's not as good at saving as me so it works best for us to keep our accounts separate. Some people only show investments while others include home equity in this thread, definitely just what works for you.

There's no rule that says you need to restrict yourself to only one race.  So for example, if you want to race / track your own retirement accounts in one race thread, but joint/ combined LNW/TNW fits in a different race level you could certainly post updates in more than one thread.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I started loosely tracking my TNW about 4 years ago; 2 years ago I began getting more detailed in my NW calculations. When I did that I realized my NW is very heavily dependent on my primary residence equity and my pension value. I decided to join in the appropriate NW race for my TNW and separate one for my LNW. It's only been a few months but I feel like it has forced me to be more honest with myself.

Congrats on the marriage!!! A new beginning :)

I have always counted everything as ours - so my numbers include everything that belongs to both my wife and I as one unit.

There is nothing to say you have to do it that way, but in most states all assets are considered one by the state regardless of personal preference and I've found it really adds a significant level of freedom and communication to the marriage when we consider everything as 'ours'. Every dollar I earn belongs to her, and vice versa.

Investments Only:

May 2021: $419,847
June 2021: $433,387
July 2021: $436,917
Aug 2021: $442,265
Nov 2021: $464,424
Dec 2021: $469,886
Jan 2022: $447,177

May 2022: $403,110

Investments only, as always. Sitting at $132k in equity if I am using the number that we paid for the house (no appreciation factored in).

I've been avoiding this post for obvious reasons! I applaud anyone whose numbers are heading in a positive direction, and those who have kept up with their updates through these rougher times.

@kickel Congrats!! Like alcon835, my spouse and I consider all money "ours" together. I think the idea of keeping track of both your combined and your personal NW sounds interesting, though!

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.
