Happy new year, everyone! It's been a good start to the year for my finances. My stretch goal will be to graduate from this thread by the end of this year, if the markets are kind enough. I'm aiming to be stricter with my spending this year and seeing how much I can push the numbers up.

On a side note, I've also just hit $400k total net worth if I include my government-mandated savings accounts - our 401k equivalent! Still can't believe it.

Fighting! Let's have a good year ahead! ^^

Bravo, @Fifo . $50k+ gains in one year... awesome!

I enjoy reading about the lifestyle options some of you are pursuing and the big savings gains because of it. Before my current relationship I had some very frugal ways of living but my SO is not one for budgeting so we have very different expenditure levels than I would on my own..but he also owns a house which has quadrupled in value (and which I am part-owner of now) so I can’t complain about his cheese consumption too much. Good work though to those of you making some awesome decisions for your future self!

I can definitely relate, @Serendip. My SO is more spendy than I am, and not such a planner. Yet between the two of us, we have still accumulated what is already a nice stash and growing. I am sure you have a positive influence your partner

Feb 1st - $167,500
Mar 1st - $160,100 (-$7,400)

Have been off work for the winter and also burning through cash working on the home we just bought, and it appears the market is down a little.  Overall, not a great month for my accounts, but I’m back to work starting Monday, and most of the costly renovation work is done, so I’m hoping the bleeding stops and I start building again

01-Jan-2025: $245,544 (+$2,654 for the month)

A low-spend month contributed to a reasonably nice gain. Because of market vagaries I'm going to remain in this thread for a little while until it's clear I'm ready for the next one.

01-Feb-2025: $263,257 (+$17,713 for the month)

Market headwinds and a vacation to the stupidly expensive Hawaii for three weeks meant modest gains for the past two months.

01-Apr-2025: $266,468 (+$3,211)

Yeah I started tracking in September of 2023 and it was all good news up until recently.

I saved 7k this month and my networth dropped 4k. Really important lesson for me to learn now and stick with it and keep plugging away like you say.

I have a large repair expense coming in May and with market fluctuations I'm going to stay in this thread for a little while until it's more clear that I'm ready for the next one.

Feb 1st - $167,500
Mar 1st - $160,100 (-$7,400)
Apr 1st - $154,100 (-$6,000)
May 1st - $149,000 (-$5,100)

At least this month I can blame the markets instead of my own spending. Feb and Mar were pretty spendy getting the new house up to speed, but Apr was not spendy at all, just the stupid trade war. I’m also getting more hours in and even if markets start sliding again through May, I think I should be in a really good spot by the end of May

Multiple jobs make a difference.

Here is the average joe's formula to wealth: Work two jobs, get expenses down so the part-time job covers all your living expenses. Invest 100% of income from main job.

Simple but not easy.

I 100% agree.  I have worked two jobs at least 1/3 of my career.  I don't think I ever got the expenses part down like you described, but agree that really is the path.

This is what I did. I worked two 12 hour shifts on the weekend while I went to school (started college at 25). When I graduated and got a full time gig, I kept the weekend job (that already covered my frugal living expenses), and saved >95% of the full time salary (starting at age 27). I did that for 4 years, which significantly accelerated the path to stash snowball effect.

@Purple_Crayon Yes... 4 years of that would certainly build up that snowball! That over 95% is great! I'm a little over 90% now... hoping I can get a main job raise also to accelerate things.

I imagine you are FIRE now. I bet all that hard work was worth it.

Nice job! DW and I have changed our target a few times. I'm in this year's cohort -- giving notice to megacorp in October. It was a struggle for DW the first few years, but she's very glad we did it now, seeing the recent money struggles of her siblings.

Had to step away for a while with the market wilding, so I didn’t do anything foolish haha. Mar and Apr drops were due to the tariff impact on the market, and then the drastic drop in USD respectively.

For now, May seems to be shaping up to be a decent month, so let’s see!

Two mega inspirational people posting on this thread.  I love what you (Purple_Crayon) have done and what @J.P. MoreGains is doing.  I have worked multiple jobs at times throughout my 25 year megacorp career.  During those times it made it much easier to advance financially.  I have not been as frugal as I should have been, but could coast FIRE rn, but would have to return to my lower cost of living home state.  I left megacorp for start up and doubled my salary in two years.  On pace to be slightly less than 3x this year.  A new kind of problem, but oddly enough I still want a side gig.  It is crazy that once you have done it, going home and doing chores for an hour after work and then nothing feels like a total waste of life energy.  Second jobs actually bring a strange euphoria.

@Purple_Crayon October is not that far away! At 39 years old you're in a great position! Was definitely worth all of the effort. Good for you!

@lcmac32 Sounds like you have a great salary which will move the needle a lot on the progress. Plus already having a coast FIRE option means you are far along. I also agree with the second job thing... I feel more motivated and engaged and I have to be so strategic with my time. It has really helped me to improve. I'm training in the gym harder than ever, I'm eating better, I'm more optimistic. When I go back to 40 hours a week it will feel like a vacation. It's a good experience for me to learn.

I had the perfect job for a college student. I worked two 12-hour graveyard shifts on help desk at a data center. I'd get a handful of tickets every night, but would have a good four to five hours of dead time per shift to do homework and study. After college, I used this time to read, play guitar, work on a novel, update spreadsheets, discover MMM, etc.

I think I'll put a ton of effort in to get to 500k and then maybe reasses and relax a bit more. But since I'm already 45 I feel like I got to do my best now.

If you can hit $500k by age 50, you could start working just enough to cover your living expenses and let that $500k turn into ~$2m by 65.  For someone who isn't looking to draw from a nest egg until conventional retirement age, getting to even $500k by 50 means you're pretty much done for a nicer than middle class retirement.  You're right on with thinking about this point in your life as a window where time is still on your side, and that window will rapidly close over the next decade.  Keep at it!

If 2024 hadn't been the most expensive year of my life the salary gains would have made a bigger impact.  Home remodel, two weddings, and figuring out self-employment taxes made for a lot more stress.  I have the taxes planned for this year.  2025 will be a bit of righting the financial ship and upping the savings rate substantially.

@Purple_Crayon - the weekend night shift at the data center.  The perfect college gig.  Part of my megacorp career was as a programmer and teaching programming for a lending system.  Some of those night shifts were pretty chill for the operations folks.  I worked the night shift at Kinkos on the weekends for a while in college.  Ultimately, I just couldn't stay awake after I had done all of the jobs, cleaned, and organized the store.  I needed more engagement and/or caffeine.  Settled on golf course maintenance and waiting tables to complete college.  Loved both of those jobs.

@roomtempmayo - I have thought about this several times, and you have much more succinctly stated how I was feeling about this.  I am already north of 50 and in the $500k-$1M race.  The time window you mentioned is just so critical.  The window is fast approaching for me that it will just be FI with no RE.

At this point I could move to LCOLA and coast FIRE or likely completely FIRE.  The truth is I value being around my kids and now grandkids more than FIRE so will keep working to be in this HCOLA.  That won't last forever, but I believe I am in the work world for at about 5 more years.  I do enjoy work and don't really want to stop.  I want to have the option to walk away with no financial worries  for the future.  Then it is true FIRE.

Agree with the window concept and I see it clearly at 45 so I'm grateful I have the time I have. I think I can get to 500k before 48 at my current pace... there will be a time when I value my health, (relative youth) and free time way more than working extra hours. So I want to get to a place with that freedom to really enjoy it during the last years of my 40s and through my 50s.

So these next years are so critical! I could see myself getting a bit past 500k so I could start to use it before 65 and then relocate to a cheap country to make it last.

Regardless either I will get it together or not in my 40s. Glad that I am doing this.

Updating a bit early, but definitely had a better month, have the last couple big expenses for our home coming up in June and July for this year, but I think we can keep momentum going. I’ve been working extra hours to cashflow them rather than dip into savings.

Yeah same here... I was like wow didn't see that coming two months ago. I'm starting to realize that a lot of this is just out of my control. I look at the portfolio swings of people with over 500k and realize why having an investment plan and sticking to it is important.

Agreed @Fifo and @J.P. MoreGains... the craziness in April was a reminder of what true volatility feels like! And I like the point about people with half million or more... five-figure swings could be common place

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
