I knew this wasn't going to be a fun update, but ouch.

If there's any silver lining to this then it's that I'm finally to a point where market swings are making as much or more difference than what I'm contributing every month.

For context: I'm 32 in a HCOL city. I'm married, but these are my own numbers since we keep our finances separate. Includes cash, retirement, and credit cards, which are used for normal expenses and paid off in full every month.

3/19: $83,762.93 (1 year tracking)
8/19: $101,572.33 (graduated to this thread)
3/20: $118,287.76 (2 years tracking)
3/21: $206,593.43 (3 years tracking)
4/21: $211,501.00 (+$4,907.57, +2.38%)
5/21: $223,080.37 (+$11,579.37, +5.47%)
6/21: $226,044.45 (+$2,964.08, +1.33%)
7/21: $233,579.18 (+$7,534.73, +3.33%)
8/21: $237,466.31 (+$3,887.13, +1.66%)
9/21: $245,186.52 (+$7,720.21, +3.25%)
10/21: $237,827.57 (-$7,358.95, -3.00%)

So close and yet so far. Hopefully the markets turn back around soon.

Target to Reach 250k: I'm hoping by the end of 2025, which assumes an average of monthly growth of $3000. It feels optimistically doable :)

OK, I'll play! I don't easily have access to the past numbers, but I'll start here. It's amazing that five years ago I was negative $10K. I'm not including my ~150K in home equity.

October 2021: $139,634

I include money that is invested for retirement accounts , but not value of savings for specific items (car insurance for the year etc.) or checking accounts as it is money I will likely use this month. I am hoping to hit 135k by end of year.

Net worth:
2018:                         2019                2020             2021
Jan                          $27,100           $45,839         $89,090
Feb                          $29,443           $43,345         $86,608
Mar                         $31,603            $39,081         $98,860
Apr    $13,200          $33,959           $47,551         $106,604
May                         $33,933           $51,613         $107,294

Dec  $23,960           $43836             $82,778

Sep2021: $122,191.09 (-$299.71) Looks like I went the wrong direction this last month, mostly due to market

I'm hoping to graduate from this thread by the end of 2024! I'm a single parent making ~75K in a HCOL city, so I'm happy with this progress, especially as the home appreciation (not included here) is a big part of my retirement plan. It's also great to see my investments as more than half of my net worth.

Are any of you including your home in your net worth, and why or why not?

I’m not including home value, because I don’t own my home unfortunately, but I also don’t count any household possessions or cars etc I own that are technically part of my net worth, but I don’t include them in these numbers because even though they have some value, they aren’t an investment for me and I wouldn’t plan on selling them to live off of, so tracking their value is somewhat meaningless.
For me, if I bought a home, any appreciation in value also wouldn’t be worth tracking as I wouldn’t plan to sell it, but I can see tracking home value if I planned to buy and then downsize or move to a LCOL area as part of my retirement plans.  BTW, you are doing incredible for anyone in a HCOL area, and double incredible for a single parent, so nice job

Thanks! I was helped by subsidized university housing my first few years, though actually the same amount of money went out because the $1500 for preschool was on top of my $1200 rent. I can totally see not including home value and that's why I haven't here, but the reality is that I can't afford to stay in the house and make $2700 payments when I'm not earning. The appreciation here in Boulder County averages 5-10% over the last 40 years so it would be irresponsible not to think of it as an asset in my own calculations.

It's frustrating to me that single folks only have half the capital appreciation write-off as a married couple. I have to buy in the same $600K plus housing market as everyone else and I'm not sure what I'll do when I am up to my $250K limit. Thinking I will live off Roth for a year quite minimally so that I can keep my taxable low and qualify for 0% capital gains. But I'll cross that bridge when I need to in a few years.

Also, seems like we are at about the same level so it will be fun to follow one another's progress!

Ah, it's crazy. Over 10% of my net worth is in crypto... more a testament to the crazy crypto gains than my investment strategy...
Now I have to decide: double down or rebalance? I have the feeling, that crypto is a possible short cut. A dangerous thought. On the other hand, I had multiple opportunities to buy whole bitcoins and didn't...

No quick decisions for me for now. Slow and steady...

Well then! Looks like it's time for me to move on. A little overwhelmed by how quickly this went, but of course part of that was due to rapid increases in my home's value (I'm tracking total NW). Still, it is crazy to look at this chart and see where I was just a few years ago.

Good work & keep going, all -- see you in the next thread.

For context: I'm 32 in a HCOL city. I'm married, but these are my own numbers since we keep our finances separate. Includes cash, retirement, and credit cards, which are used for normal expenses and paid off in full every month.

3/18: $48,533.91 (found MMM and started tracking)
3/19: $83,762.93 (1 year tracking)
8/19: $101,572.33 (graduated to this thread)
3/20: $118,287.76 (2 years tracking)
3/21: $206,593.43 (3 years tracking)
4/21: $211,501.00 (+$4,907.57, +2.38%)
5/21: $223,080.37 (+$11,579.37, +5.47%)
6/21: $226,044.45 (+$2,964.08, +1.33%)
7/21: $233,579.18 (+$7,534.73, +3.33%)
8/21: $237,466.31 (+$3,887.13, +1.66%)
9/21: $245,186.52 (+$7,720.21, +3.25%)
10/21: $237,827.57 (-$7,358.95, -3.00%)
11/21: $254,300,88 ($16,473.31, 6.93%)

Wow, looks like I've potentially graduated! All thanks to the market, because I spent a lot this month. We'll see if it holds for December, or I may be back...

Great gains this month, my husband started a new job so he missed out on two weeks of 401k contributions, which is unfortunate but it didnt slow us down much. Feel pretty confident we wont slip back under 100k at this point so we are here for the long haul. Love reading all the progress happening here. Way to go everyone. So inspiring :)

I'm excited to submit my first post to the forum!  On the one hand, we are late bloomers having first heard about the FIRE movement about a year ago at age 43.  On the other hand, we have been saving our whole lives, which has given us a bit of a head start.  We had been "investing" in life insurance and money market accounts and other types of CDs for years.  Over the last year, we have poured most of our liquid assets into an msci world ETF.  I will track our depot account level here.  We are well on our way to 250k and I'm happy to have this chance for financial independence before the age of 67!  Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress on this board!

19th October, 2021 - 200,000 EUR
03rd November, 2021 - 204,755 EUR
Goal: 300,000 EUR in April 2024

Welcome!

Also, seems like we are at about the same level so it will be fun to follow one another's progress!

Absolutely!

Hello All!  I'm joining here after a little finally making it too 100.

Investments only:
9/4/18      73,600
10/4/18    75,950
11/7/18    75,960
10/7/21    96,760
11/12/21 101,000

I took some time off from tracking but I'm back and focused again.  Based on current deposits it will take 5 years to get to 250k so I think I need to increase....
