Took a big hit this month. Closed on our house, I am conservatively estimating its value and then subtracting all closing costs if we were to sell it to calculate our "true" equity.

Also by far the biggest market losses I have experienced, but it hasn't really phased me.... yet

   Jul 1, 2016      -$19,048
   Jan 1, 2017      -$25,189     <--Found MMM
   Jan 1, 2018       $110,473
   Feb 1       $116,237
   Mar 1       $122,184
   Apr 1       $122,764
   May 1       $129,950
   June 1       $149,174
   July 1       $154,992
   Aug 1       $167,846
   Sep 1       $180,482
   Oct 1       $185,098
   Nov 1       $194,857            (+9759)

Welp.

The largest amount I've socked away in a month sure was hampered by the market drops (Added 20,442 and went up by 9,759) . At least some of the stocks were bought on discount and I'm still technically up from last month so let's keep the train a-rolling. Progress here will slow down as my tax-advantaged accounts are all full. Taxable money now goes to my wifes accounts (with included attribution calculations and all that Jazz).

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Posting to follow, and join all you in this race. I actually only calculate my NW every 6 months... Made an exception this time, this is the current status (was close to 0$ two years ago...):

October 2018: 82642$ invested (NW 118669$)

Wish me luck!

OCTOBER UPDATE

03/01/18: $100,871
04/01/18: $104,410
05/01/18: $109,333
06/01/18: $111,851
07/01/18: $115,134
08/01/18: $118,949
09/01/18: $121,714
10/01/18: $123,222
11/01/18: $123,710 ($488 increase)

Despite the small increase this month I am strangely satisfied. Managed to buy stocks at a discount with $3,500 in new contributions, and $6,500 from cash savings. Been sitting on too much cash for a little while so happy to get more little green soldiers employed.

10/1/18 - $245,070 // $155,324

11/1/18 - $228,174 // $144,718

Woof.  Some wedding expenses starting to hit, market downturn, refinanced (so about $3k in escrows still need refunded).  Always said getting to $250k by end of the year would be dependent on the market and the market let me down.

I will join in the race but only counting my "Early Retirement stash". So this does not include my emergency-fund, pension capital, or payed-off residence.

These are the "end of the month" numbers:
Month      Early Retirement Stash
Jan 2016   €  58,971.00
...
Jan 2017   €  86 368.00
...
Jan 2018   € 119 817.00
Feb 2018   € 118 464.00
Mar 2018   € 115 094.00
Apr 2018   € 122 622.00
May 2018   € 128 787.00
Jun 2018   € 130 283.31
Jul 2018   € 135 595.00
Aug 2018   € 138 342.00
Sep 2018   € 139 524.74

Oct 2018   € 138 230.42

My saving could not keep up with the market losses.

Down 10k.

My 3.5k savings was destroyed by my 13.5k drop in the market. Oh well, my NW can't always go up by more than my total income

Jan. 1, 2017 - 103,000
Feb. 1, 2017 - 106,500
Mar. 1 2017  - 102,500
Apr. 1  2017 -  110,000
May 1  2017 -  112,500
June 1 2017 -  113,500

Sept. 1 2017-  131,000
Oct.  1  2017-  131,500
Nov. 1  2017 - 135,000
Dec. 1  2017 - 140,000
Jan. 1   2018 - 160,000
Feb. 1   2018-  168,000

Nov. 1 2018 -  184,000

10% drop in VIGAX hurts.

I do love the manipulation by news articles.  Their overreaching on fear mongering actually gives me comfort that things aren't nearly as bad as my 15% drop would seem.  After all, this month only set me back 3 1/2 months.
Some of my favorite of the last month are
Dow Wipes out all earnings for 2018.  Yes, but the 12 month growth is, get this, 7.17%.  HOORAY MATH!
How will you survive the next 4000 point drop!?   Depending on if I saw this article at the first of the month or the last, this would put the market back anywhere from 12 - 18 months.  How CAN your retirement withstand a drop of potentially a year and a half!?

In personal news, a BIG DEAL I mentioned a few months back finally paid through.  Looking forward to a noticeable bump in value end of year with the side company's bonus.  Depending on if we pull the trigger on the family minivan now or next year, I may be painfully close to leaving this thread behind (only to return, leave, return, leave, and then finally have enough direct contributions to pull up off the runway for good).

3/1/18 - $100,568
4/1/18 - $103,798
5/1/18 - $108,542

10/1/18 - $139,465
11/1/18 - $131,465

Exactly $8,000 down this month.  November gives me 3 paychecks (vs. 2) though, so I'm eager to put that to work regardless of whether November is more of the same!

5/1/17     25,273
6/1/17     52,894  (I believe we transferred some money over)
7/1/17     59,114
8/1/17     67,337
9/1/17     75,486
10/1/17   80,726
11/1/17   85,681
12/1/17  100,005  (extra paycheck month for us both!)
1/1/18    105,431
2/1/18    108,535
3/1/18    111,337
4/1/18    117,617
5/1/18    135,266 (a slight tax refund and extra paycheck!)
6/1/18    146,521
7/1/18    150,573
8/1/18    155,306 (slow and steady)
9/1/18    169,777
10/1/18  178,901 (DW started to contribute to 401k, some good market returns!)
11/1/18  179,225 (man the market sucked balls the past month, poured lots of money in just to see no result...)

This had made me want a different AA in place though, as I was never quite there in the first place (mostly US stocks).  It's also made me reevaluate some priorities since my timeline for FI could be later than Ive been planning on.  Essentially this just means for me, some things I was waiting to buy actual have increased overall happiness levels; i.e., life is short, so enjoy some time and some fun shit if you responsibly are able.  Hope to talk to you all next month with some better numbers!

Why do you have money in the market if you still have credit card debt?

Brand new to this forum, this is literally my first post. Excited to see this take off towards 250k and beyond. Started professional career in this country back 2012 at 31 years old, effectively starting from scratch. Super fortunate to have gotten a great opportunity in 2016 that has really allowed me to catch up a number of years in a short time span. My wife has been retired nearly 15 years, she is significantly older than me and she is therefore not interested in planning for the future. This is 100% a solo effort.

Edited: Added a lot more detail from what I could find on Mint.

Oct-12: $0.00
Nov-12: $432.15
Dec-12: $1192.8
Jan-13: $1542.90
Jan-14: $7286.11
Jan-15: $16985.5
Jan-16: $26770.16
Jan-17: $58399.77
Jan-18: $95469.77
Feb-18: 111724.81
Mar-18: $112878.91
Apr-18: $117425.35
May-18: $123001.77
Jun-18: $125427.65
Jul-18: $135341.45
Aug-18: $138059.7
Sep-18: $142216.90

I currently max out 401k, my Roth IRA and my ESPP which is pretty much all I can get away with due to S/O not being on board (which is somewhat understandable as she is on a pension already and significantly older than me). I also put about $4400 per year in HSA currently and may consider maxing that out soon as well. We could do with more of an EF buffer but again, she sees no value in it as she considers her income '100% guaranteed'. It is for the most part as the retirement fund she is relying on has done really well.

All done for the month
Oct-18: $149116 + $3500  in HSA which I'm including for the first time. = $152616

Graduation Target is June 2020 but January 2020 is my stretch goal.

Nov-18: $142004 + $3922 in HSA = $145926 Slightly lower drop vs what I had expected but I had some one time expenses and my tax advantaged savings vehicles are full for the year.

HMM, back to sometime in Aug numbers.  That is a bummer, good thing I have a LOT of years left to keep buying or else I might let these numbers bum me out a lot more.  Based on contributions alone I will not make that stretch goal this year, I need the market to help at least a little to get me there.

GRR... I put in my Nov 1st number and I think I might have messed this thing up.  My name does not show on the "Big Board" tab anymore but there is a lovely blank row where I believe I should probably be.

Well, October was rough to me all around, but I didn't decline as much as I thought I would. Hooray for forced mortgage "saving" and 457 contributions, as well as investments that aren't as tech heavy as many.

Got some more money in the market right around the dip, so probably already made most of the loss from October back even though I'm still down overall...but here's to hoping for a better November. So far, just a couple of unforecasted expenses, so the credit card bill (when it comes) will be higher this month than usual (dentist, insulation for steam pipes since we are renovating) but shall be paid off in full as always...but wife is on board, we are both chopping expenses as much as possible till the end of the year, so hoping for some good things. Also experimenting with a muni bond fund in my taxable account through Vanguard to see how it goes generating tax free income for a change.

December 2014: $89,173 (I don't have the exact date I hit 100K, so including this here anyway)
December 2015: $106,299
December 2016: $147,449
December 2017: $182,600
June 2018: $217,065
July 2018: $221,250
August 2018: 222,274
September 2018: 224,569
October 2018: 220,241

This sh*t is moving in the wrong direction for me to meet my stretch goal.  We all know that the complete random goals that we set 1-5 years ago are really what matters here.  For me FIRE is still too far in the future.

On a completely unrelated ;) note, I get to buy some relatively (relative to the end of Sept) cheap stocks as my 401k contribution should hit tomorrow.

Yes, let's hear it for random goals set years in the past! This is all that separates us from the other animals, like clams and koala bears. Seriously, this sh*t does hurt when you're accustomed to bumping up each month. It sucks to look at the numbers and say, "I worked my ass off all month and my net worth is down??"

But I will never return to this vile thread. Never!

Except now. But I am leaving.

I've actually gotten to watch my mindset shift in the last month. In October I did struggle with frustration from watching my hard work yield a...lower...net worth, but kept telling myself that it really meant I could buy stock cheaper than a month before. But this month it's completely shifted. Now I'm reading stories about stock indices dropping with glee, and have no idea what it's doing to my current net worth. It's quite a nice change!

I guess the fact that I've mostly given up on my goal of $250k by the end of 2018 has a lot to do with it. October was a bit agonizing because I went from expecting to meet that arbitrary goal, to not meeting it. Now that I'm over that, it's much easier to focus on the positive side. It's like a Black Friday sale out there!

First number is retirement savings, second is total NW including cash emergency savings and real estate equity.

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779 (total NW $269,089)

January 2017: $151,307 (total NW $276,052)
December 2017: $193,677 (total NW $364,276)

January 2018: $203,876
February 2018: $200,867 (total NW $382,740)
March 2018: $196,371 (total NW $393,470)
April 2018: $197,690 (total NW $397,029)
May 2018: $201,800 (total NW $372,420) hit with a special assessment at the condo
June 2018: $202,198 (total NW $376,525)
July 2018: $208,954 (total NW $380,041)
August 2018:$213,699 (total NW $385,100)
September 2018: $215,600 (total NW $385,197)
October 2018: $201,612 :-/ (total NW $372,274)
November 2018: $204,686 (total NW $376,288)

I know the total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge. A good chunk of the NW is real estate equity.

Another VERY spendy month on the new house, still have to buy a washer/dryer and remodeling a couple more rooms. We're doing it all ourselves but have still spent ~8k the last two months that otherwise would go to investments.

Not going to hit 250k invested this year unless I get a very generous EOY bonus. But will hopefully hit end of January when I transfer some saved cash to max out our Roth IRAs!

Stock Market helped with this one. My tax-advantaged accounts are full so we've started filling my spouse's. Complicated tracking but she refuses to take the "handout" so they'll be tracked as mine until she saves enough to counterbalance them (or until I convince her money is fungible and it doesn't really matter).

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Dec-18: $145596.37 Investments incl 401k + $5265.18 HSA = $150861.55

Not a bad month, hope to eclipse the all time high next month and maybe even hit $155k.

06/2018 - $127,908
07/2018 - $128,267
08/2018 - $130,454
09/2018 - $133,960
10/2018 - $133,054
11/2018 - $128,883

12/2018 - $130,047

Retirement accounts coming back helped a bit, but I've also trimmed some expenses and paid down CC over the past few months!  Small victories!

Had a goal of 170k net worth  by the end of year. Don’t think I’m going to make it, October killed that dream. But I still feel good about my progress.
