 7/17/17    $182,905   $301,487
 8/17/17    $184,943   $301,381
 9/17/17    $191,576   $308,692
10/17/17   $197,557   $314,090
11/17/17   $201,230   $315,249

1/17/18     $225,531   $340,364
2/17/18     $224,612   $344,742

Not bad considering how far down the market went.

I changed the rules of this game for myself, so I'm only tracking our retirement accounts. With that calculation, we're now at $112,500, not counting the vested portion of my pension plan (I have no plans to cash that out) or any taxable accounts we might touch for home repair or other necessary purchases.

My rationale for keeping the mortgage (our only debt) out of this is that we pay less than the going rental rate for the smallest apartment we could comfortably live in, and we've hit the halfway mark on the mortgage (what we have in equity is equal to what we owe), so it's a net worth wash.

I think we can hit 250k in three years with a crappy market and two years in a good one at our current savings rate. My 403 and our IRAs are maxed out, but I have room to invest more in my 457 and my husband has room to invest more in his 401; we don't yet have the funds to do so. If we could max those out, we'd be looking at a year and a half to two years.

Either way, it's looking good considering we just got to the above number after ten years of marriage.

We can retire once we have $800,000 in our retirement + my pension (earliest in 15 years). We're on track to meet that $800,000 goal at exactly the time I can retire with my pension even assuming flat market returns and no increased contributions. Any additional contributions or any good returns will be icing. We're also on track to pay off our house in 12-15 years, so our cost of living will decrease considerably at exactly the right time.

With my luck, we'll have a nice market crash upon my retirement, but I like my work and can continue it if need be. I'll also make more conservative investments as retirement nears, of course.

I am joining this race from the $10k-$100k race!  Hopefully not too early.

I don't count true NW but thought it would be nice to look back and see it, so I added it!  What I am really tracking is the "Invested Total" column.  I also don't count different savings accounts if they have a specific purpose (maternity leave, self-employment taxes, etc).

What is happening in 2018:  Baby #2 is due in late March!  I accepted a job offer last week that includes a 30+% raise. I will not be able to contribute to the new company 401k until I have been there for 30 days, very close to when I take unpaid maternity leave, and we are holding off on putting anything into the IRA until after maternity leave so our Invested Total should follow the market increases/dips for the next several months with very little contributions added.  We also plan to finish off student loans in 2018 (finally).  If DH's business continues growing as it has for the last few months I would love to max his IRA and then will need to make decisions of paying down debt vs investing in another rental vs increasing my 401k vs opening an IRA for me vs increasing contributions to 529 Plans.

I get to STAY!! We decided to add $3k in 2017 contributions to the IRA a few days into Feb and it looks like that $3k is almost exactly what we needed (in the Invested Total) to stay in this race.

Code: [Select]
401K        IRA Invested Total Home Value Rental Value Debt         Total NW
Dec-13 $43,660 $0         $43,660 $120,000 $120,000 $232,000 $51,660
Dec-14 $52,943 $0         $52,943 $125,000 $125,000 $227,000 $75,943
Dec-15 $55,622 $0         $55,622 $130,000 $130,000 $227,000 $88,622
Dec-16 $68,870 $700 $69,570 $200,000 $130,000 $281,000 $118,570
Dec-17 $96,294 $1,167 $97,461 $240,000 $135,000 $317,727 $154,724
Jan-18 $101,379 $1,212 $102,591 $240,000 $135,000 $316,332 $161,258
Feb-18 $97,645 $4,248 $101,894 $240,000 $135,000 $314,997 $161,896

I am a little impatient to post end of Feb numbers today but I am also a little to perfectionist about it showing actual end of month numbers, so I might be editing this in the next couple of days to actual end of FEB numbers. Impatient perfectionist is not generally a good combination.

Edited: Updated to show actual end of Feb numbers (not 2-3 days early numbers).  Looks like without that IRA contribution we would have been pushed back under the $100k mark.  I can't wait until I can start contributing to the 401k again.

Retirement only, does not include real estate or emergency savings:

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779 (total NW $269,089)

January 2017: $151,307 (total NW $276,052)
December 2017: $193,677 (total NW $364,276)

January 2018: $203,876
February 2018: $200,867 (total NW $382,740)

Goal is to hit $250k by the end of 2018!

I know the total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge. A good chunk of the NW is real estate equity.

Investments only. Couldn't out save the market losses. On the plus side, DH recently was given a nice raise which we've already scheduled to immediately dump into investments when it kicks in in April. We are at the point that his 401k and my 403b are maxed, but we have room left in my 457b. So even though it was his raise, we'll funnel the money into my 457b.

I went back to update since October.  I moved, and my contributions dropped considerably to support multiplied living expenses.  I'm not including the new home/mortgage here, but when we sell our prior home, I may put the proceeds of that sale here, and then I will put the loan against it, as it is a truer representation of our invested assets.  We are still trying to decide if/how much of the proceeds to invest once the house sells.  It should net us around $300-350k (depending on so many things).  I'm not sure I feel great about putting all that in the market right now, so may split it 50/50 with the new loan balance.  Contributions will increase again once we only have one home, but will be lower than previous contributions to account for mortgage debt service we didn't previously have.

First, congratulations to those have graduated the group!

AS for us....

4/5/17 - 101,800 (joined the 'group')
10/19/17 - 156,200

Thanks to the nice market gains and continued contributions, our NW (home equity not included) has steadily risen. Could we have done better? Sure. But we like our current balance of spending/saving.

Richard

Just checking in to report our progress.

2/28/18 - $204,400

Jan 1, 2017 - $177k
Jan 1, 2018 - $196k
Feb 1, 2018 - $214,462

March 1, 2018 $225,651

Stock Market closed a bit rough at the end of this month. I actually “saved” about $18,000 this month, but lost about $7,000 in the stock market drops. Not the end of the world and I’m still fortunate I was able to out-save the market loss a bit still. It’s going to be cutting it close to hit my goal of $250k by the end of April. A lot will depend if the market drops anymore.

It is an 'ouch' to write a negative number -- I did it this month too.  But I think this is definitely a 'yay' Raenia -- it means the stash is reaching the point where market fluctuations are sometimes greater than your contributions.  Your money is starting to work harder than you can.  (If you look at the lower $ threads, most of those folks did not see a net decrease this month, while most people 'upthread' -- like the $500k to $1M thread -- did).

Well done everyone!!  Keep calm and keep filling those buckets!  :)

Investments and liquid assets, not including condo equity:

April 15, 2017 -           164,900
May 1, 2017 -             ? (Lost info)
June 1, 2017 -            ? (Lost info)
July 1, 2017 -             180,808
August 10, 2017 -       189,280

October 1, 2017 -        209,968
November 1, 2017 -     220,602
December 1, 2017 -     225,918
January 1, 2018 -        232,213
February 1, 2018 -       245,447
March 1, 2018 -           242,789

This month was a rough one for me, I had more than normal costs for my condo and it was vacant the whole month... on the bright side, I accepted an offer on it that will rent it out for the next two months refund me the extra costs this month and pay 24k more than I paid for it.  I also am still owed 2800 from my job and around 6k in taxes.  I should be well into the next race in the next few months!

Employer Match went in this month, which is the only reason I was able to stay even.

It is going to be really weird for those of us who have ever only known gains our whole investing life of up to the past 9 years (almost literally, the Great Recession bottomed out March 9, 2009) when the good times stop being good.

I think we'll see a lot of true colors shining through on the forums, both for better and worse.  For me, so long as the job security can stay firm I'll be fine, although I know I'll struggle buying into the teeth of a downturn no matter how well educated I am about the benefit of doing so.

Kind of funny that during the last update I was excited about our investments crossing $200k, and then this month I got to watch them dip below and crest above that mark again. Happy to buy some stocks on sale this month :)

Started paying for some honeymoon and wedding reception expenses, otherwise it was a pretty low month for spending. There was a slight bump in our paychecks as the new paycheck withholding tables went into effect - but I will definitely need to adjust withholdings this month based on our 2018 projections.

Hmm. Apparently my superannuation investments got hit harder in the "correction" than I expected. If I take my investment accounts off the table I'm actually up for the period.

Next time... It's a bit frustrating to be so close ($16.5k) in this challenge and not quite tipping over the line.

It will be interesting to see how we all handle more drops like the one yesterday.

I asked earlier if people would leave these threads if market drops reduced their net worth out of the minimal range for the thread, but I guess the answer will depend on the individual. I would assume that most people will stay in a thread once they get there, even if market forces technically push them back down to the previous thread.

It would be sort of crushing to be 'demoted.'

Including IRAs, 401(k), HSA, and Investment Account.
Jan 1, 2016 - $81,396
Aug 1, 2016 - $120,039
Oct 1, 2016 - $122,943
Jan 1, 2017 - $128,893

Nov 1, 2017 - $196,010 - yippee!! so close to $200K!

Dec 1, 2017 - $201,106 - nice! Crossed over to the $200k line. Let's hope I can stay for awhile. Still projecting Jan 2019 to hit $250k.

Congrats to all the graduates this month!

Jan 1, 2018 - $205,595.91

Feb 1, 2018 - $216,842.97

Mar 1, 2018 - $205,429.70
Yikes, all my contributions and then some are gone.... Oh well, keep plugging away! Bonus hits this month, so I will hopefully see a bump.

For me it would depend on how close to the boarder I was, and if I felt the next month of contribution would put me back in.  Yes, this is a net worth thread with specific boundaries, but this is also a paper loss.  If I were slowly accumulating, then every new boundary crossing could create back and forth between threads.  That said, if the market tanked and I was now like 2-3 months contributions away, I'd go back.

Sitting this close to the upper end of the scale for this thread, I really hope that I never have to fall back out again! That's some serious market "correction" right there that is probably only possible given a WWIII or zombie apocalypse scenario, in which case my net worth will be the least of my worries. :)

February 1:  $246,732.17   It looks like a big jump.  Part of it is because I got a big bonus put in my retirement account in December, which shows up on the January statement, which then gets reflected in the Jan 31/Feb 1 net worth update.  That's about half of this gain.  The other half is at the end of every year I go through our budget and various sinking funds and any extra money that we don't need to carry forward I deposit into savings.  I only count 1/5 of our checking account balance towards our net worth (long story with reasons, just believe me) so moving it into savings makes it 5x as valuable.  And if I remember right the market went up, right?

March 1:  $242,060.78  Market went downnnnn.  Our cash and savings are up, so this just shows how much the market dropped.  I think this is the first time the market drop has had a significant downward impact on our net worth.  It feels weird.

Just the thread I was looking for. Been working on saving for a while, so looking forward to tracking my progress with others. I include all retirement accounts, investments, personal accounts, liabilities, and home equity in my net worth calculations since that's how I've always done it.

January 1, 2018        : $97,318
February 2, 2018       : $104,695
March 1,2018            : $107,006

We could have had more increase if it wasn't for the stock market wrath.
