Starting out at --->
June  2017     $125,500
JULY  2017     $126,500

1,000 bucks this month, not very impressive. House value went up but I do not count that in this net worth value. Waiting on a distribution from an investment that should boost me up next month hopefully.

Starting out at --->
June  2017     $125,500
JULY  2017     $126,500
AUGUST  2017 $128,300

+$1800 Not bad. A couple of random one time wins.

Won a free share of facebook ($164) signing up for Robinhood, thanks to someone who recommended it on a MMM fourm.

My side hustle teaching design and freelance on Skillshare is paying off! Had a few referrals as well as getting paid for people viewing my classes. +$220!  Not bad for having fun!

+200 credit card bonus came through! wells fargo cash wise, getting my husbands next month :)

+50 doing some product reviews for G2, they keeping asking me to fill out more reviews, I get 10 bucks or an amazon card each. I guess they like my reviews, not sure everyone gets invited to do more than one.

Thanks! I wish the fantastic start had come about ten years earlier, but I'm really happy with where we are now!! :-)

Aug 1 2017: $244,461.55

Almost!!!

I love this thread, getting to see everyone's progress :-)

___________________________________________________________
Another great month! Up $5,632.14 or 3.2% to $180,150.06!!
This is despite some pretty big spending (thank you, market!):
  • $920 - car repairs (front brakes, brake fluid, serpentine belt, filters, etc.)
  • $450 - veterinarian (ultrasound to check on heart murmur, annual checkup and vaccines)
  • $300 - new mattress - IKEA Sultan from 2008 has had it ; on the plus side, fixed the slats on my Malm bed with $1.75 of wood and help from a really friendly dude at Home Depot!

Some of us are tracking our progress here, feel free to join in:

Isn't it great to see expenses like those become mere blips in the numbers? Great month!

Hi All,

Just graduated to the new class,

July 2017
Shares: $60,423
Cash: $50,000
Superannuation: ~ $40,000

Slowly switching cash across to shares till it is at a more reasonable level whilst trying to save at least 50% of my income. Currently a split between IOZ & VGS (Australian Stock Exchange)

Looking forward to joining the journey with you.

Cheers

Hello fellow mustachians!  I'm excited to join this thread!
I've just recently been bit by the MMM bug and feeling motivated. My last few months are unusual due to larger paychecks during the summer months, but hoping to keep the momentum on the way to 250k.

4/1/17: $155,552
5/1/17: $160,430
6/1/17: $165,384
7/1/17: $174,224 (three paycheck month, a few stipends pay out in June)

Some big expenses coming up over the next couple months: an out-of-state move, my wedding, and furnishing our new place. I should be able to 'hold the line' at around $175,000. If I manage to hit $180,000 on 9/1, though, that would be wonderful.

8/1: $175,435

It's a wonderful thing when I'm disappointed by a 'mere' $1,000 increase in NW! Just as it's a wonderful thing that TarHeelDan's major expenses become, as SpareChange says, a 'blip in the numbers'. That's exactly what I noticed this month with moving expenses, initial up-front costs of renting a new place, furnishing said place, etc.

I know the feeling. My savings rate has taken a hit this year since moving a few months ago. I've tried to keep expenses down, but I have had to buy a lot items, start paying utility bills on my own, make adjustments in insurance, etc. I'm hoping to get more in a regular groove soon as far as monthly expenses becoming more routine and predictable.

Very much looking forward to crossing that $200K barrier. Turning that straight 1 into a crooked 2 is going to be mighty sweet.

Solid August! Maxed out IRAs for the year! Bam! $180K MAY be possible by year's end, if the market stays hot. However, we have to start cash flowing braces payments for one kiddo and some medical testing for the other, so progress might slow a bit.

16th March 2017 - $156,970.56
14th April 2017 - $172,158.80 (+$15,188.24)
18th May 2017 - $187,986.35 (+$15,827.55)
18th June 2017 - $219,742.03 (+$31,755.68) Whatever small amount I had in cryptocurrencies went bonkers 😳
14th July 2017 - $200,846.03 (-$18,896) - Vanguard dropped over 5% and the crypto portfolio dropped 34%. Additionally I paid for house renovation, moving, bond, and prepaid the rent. So the drop may look dramatic but it's really where it was 6 weeks ago. Also I own way more Vanguard units now than during the last update.
17th August 2017 - $228,106.09 (+$27,260.06) Back on track, although I still have some big expenses coming up in the near future. Hoping to graduate by the end of October 2017.

Just topped $100k this morning, thanks to 457 plan contribution! Basically $120k invested, $18k in cash/checking, $70k student loans, $32k home equity.

That's based on a very conservative estimate of home equity. A more realistic estimate would have put me over $100k a couple months ago, but since I have no plans to sell for at least 10 years, I want to underemphasize the role home equity plays in my thinking.

How do the rest of you factor home equity into NW calculations?

How do the rest of you factor home equity into NW calculations?

Also not planning on moving in 8+ years.

I use "owner page" estimates from Redfin and Zillow and then take a look at the comps every month or so - a site that just aggregates data is bound to get one or two wrong now and then.  So I follow what the market is doing in my area for similar houses as mine (about once a month), check that against the Redfin and Zillow estimates (note - Zestimates are terrible, but their owner page is fairly accurate), and then use a $/sq ft I think my house would sell for.

I started breaking out Total NW and Invested Assets, or stash.  I figure home equity isn't as relevant to FIRE until we sell, but even then it'll just go to the next house purchase.

I'm about 3 years away from this thread but like to look at it for comparisons. Why don't more people post their income/age for becnhmarking purposes on this thread? I know it is personal, but so is NW. It would be really helpful to see if the 6k jump every month is based on savings/market jumping or just a pay raise.

I added context to my tally on the Race to 10k but would appreciate if more people were willing to share more information for context for newbies looking into the future. IE. I probably wont race through this thread in 1 year like the guy making $250k a year, but I would be comparable to the woman making 80k with a mortgage.

Check out my numbers, then. My wife and I are fairly similar since we combine for between 90k and 100k/yr with a mortgage and the rest of that. In this thread, I've also broken it down by savings and market gains. The 10k-100k has the rest of the numbers easily accessible (as does my journal!).

Hi Marty, I think I did post that on my thread. It can help a ton to see where people are coming from on these threads.
I'm 29, husband is 30, we've got no kids and we rent in a LCOL area (I think? I'm not quite sure how one determines LCOL vs. MCOL). My husband just recently starting working after years of us being a single income family while he was in school. My salary progression is in my posts and I also do a little summary of the past month. I hope this helps!

Thanks! It is quite impressive how you moved up especially the early years on 1 lower income. Really making progress now.

This all makes good sense. I've got Total NW (just over $100k) and Invested Assets ($120k) broken out as well. Total NW growing by ~$8700/month, Invested Assets growing by about $4k/month + or - market activity.

Oh, for martyconlonontherun, my wife and I are basically 40, two kids 8 & 12. MCOL? Combined gross is like $170k. Large mortgage payment ($2600/month for 15-year at 2.75%) and just over $1k/month in student loan payments.

Looks like you are ramping it up $8-9k  consistently out of $15K/mth gross with 2 kids and high SLoans is pretty solid!

I exclude it, but it is not very satisfying when you renovate or something and your NW stagnates.  I am considering maintaining a second column including the RE equity, maybe based off the cost basis or something.

Column 1: investments (retirement + otherwise):
Column 2: total net worth (including investments, savings account and the paid off part of the house)

7/17/17    $182,905   $301,487
8/17/17    $184,943   $301,381

I feel completely discouraged since we went down in our net worth this month.:(
But... 1) the market went down; 2) we had 2 unplanned for medical emergencies (which never happens, as we are all fairly healthy), 3) international work travel which will be compensated next month 4) a big event which was lovely and happens maybe once every 10 or 20 years, 5) a couple of out of town visitors who we wanted to have a nice time with and not worry about money while they were here, and 6) 2 major house maintenance purchases. So maybe it's actually completely reasonable that our net worth went down by $100 in one month.

And maybe I am too neurotic to keep track of this on a monthly basis.

8/24/2017:  $228, 854 (disappointing month for saving - car costs higher than expected, long awaited vacation from work during which I let my spendypants hair down a little, DW's friends' destination wedding, and stock market drop = you can't even tell I put 4K away - yeesh....   well back to the grind so......

Nice to share in the misery this month though - seems quite a few of us didn't make as much progress as hoped - I'm guessing this is mostly b/c we've gotten used to regular and significant market gains over the past couple months.....

Oh well - long game, right??

Looking good to see everybody making progress. Totally understand about this month being a small gain and/or small loss for people. Didn't make much of a move compared to last month.
However I am excited to see that I hit 100K in May and I'm already at 110K today.  I've heard that after you make your first 100K it will go faster. Can't wait to see how long till the next milestone of 250K. My estimate is somewhere in July of 2021...but that is a linearity estimate. So I imagine (hope) it's sometime before then.

07/31/16   $69,790.01
08/31/16   $70,534.23
09/30/16   $73,742.76
10/31/16   $74,282.52
11/30/16   $77,284.23
12/31/16   $80,583.50
01/31/17   $84,085.00
02/28/17   $88,359.35
03/31/17   $93,104.53
04/30/17   $97,055.33
05/31/17   $100,655.06
06/30/17   $103,736.43
07/31/17   $108,879.02
08/31/17   $110,209.71

(as always, house is not included in net worth since I don't consider it an asset until I sell it)

It's been a while since I posted here, but here's the update.

2014-1-1: $60k
2015-1-1: $92k
2016-1-1: $125k
2016-12-2: $187,320
2017-1-1:   $202,158
2017-2-23: $209k
2017-8-31: $230k

We're getting there. With all the medical expenses we've had, and travel too, I was surprised to see much of an increase since earlier in the year. I'll take it, but be working harder to get these numbers up for the rest of the year.

Retirement only, does not include real estate or emergency savings:

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779 (total NW $269,089)

January 2017: $151,307 (total NW $276,052)
February 2017: $156,620 (total NW $285,663)
March 2017: $161,585 (total NW $302,055)
April 2017: $166,111 (total NW $306,801)
May 2017: $169,686 (total NW $327,523)
June 2017: $171,784 (total NW $335,026)
July 2017: $175,590 (total NW $342,138)
August 2017: $176,250 (total NW $347,833) Glad to see a small increase despite an unexpected $3,000 emergency special assessment this month for my rental condo.

I know the total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge. A good chunk of the NW is real estate equity.

6/30/2017 $117,232 ~ +1.29%
7/31/2017 $119,087 ~ +1.58%

8/31/2017 $123,218 ~ +3.47%

Number based on Mint.
Does not include car loan (~2000) to be payed off in September.

Slow and steady, I can live with that.

Welcome to all the new fellows on the march to 250k!
same investing strategy
everything according to the plan: rolling over only short running structured products (bonus certificates (1 to 2 months)) on the european indexes DAX\EuroStoxx50, no stocks.
No liabilities + a paid Appartment (Value approx. 300,000€)

The increases are mostly investment gains, my monthly savings rate is around 500€.
Invested Assets+ Cash Account:
1/1/2016 Jan:    64,400€

1/1/2017 Jan:  104,000 €
2/1/2017 Feb:  105,000 €
3/1/2017 Mar:  107,000 €
4/1/2017 Apr:  110,000 €
5/1/2017 May:  112,900 €
6/1/2017 June:  117,868 €
7/1/2017 July:  122,085 €
8/1/2017 Aug:  129,365 €
9/1/2017 Sept:  134,209 €

Higher market  volatility, higher risk, higher gains. The markets are still too smooth, i do not care if they are going up or down, just need volatility to get cheap derivates.

Planned Graduation Date 250k: June 2020

Happy Investing  ;)

Not the best of months, a stock pick has lost a significant amount this month (Teaches me to stock pick). Also I have my wedding coming up so there is a fair few expenses on the horizon. Just have to keep plugging away 250k here we come :p

7/1/2017  $100,056
8/1/2017     $105,261
9/4/2017    $105,325 It has been a crazy month full of many large ups and downs. During this month we: bought a van we intend to move into next summer, had about $1200 in car repairs (managed to save another $800 or so in labor doing what i could myself),  and recieved a large reimbursement from some previous expenses. In summation, no movement forward this month, but I am happy to have broke even everything considered. I will have to look at the positives in the money I saved doing the repairs myself and what we will save in the future without rent.
